My Highland DD has just started learning some Irish, so here I am reading about an Irish movement called "Plushenko", named for Evgeni Plushenko? Hilarious, as my competitive sport as a girl was figure skating. I can't wait to request to see the movement ! And thank you for the notes. I'll pass them on to the kiddo as she learns some new moves for fun.

This is great!! It really helps when you are talking to other people from other dance schools who have different terminology for these different moves. I wished everyone had to call everything the same thing. It would make life so much easier for all of us dancers!! Don't you agree?!?!?

Flutter-by
Description: kind of like an entrechat but with your legs in front of you.. also like two beats but you switch in between them. Bring frontleg up as you jump off back leg, slap legs together, bring front leg up a little, back leg down a little, then front leg down (in the back) the back leg down (in the front). Like a beat then a click before landing.

Oh God, I cant do those to save my life...i can do the normal "beat" fine but the "flutter-by" is just way too hard..been tryin to find a way to do them or get enough height to, but we don't do them in class so I don't know... Grr frustration!

Thanks, that was really helpful. :)

At my studio, we also call 'twists' sometimes 'swizzles.' (I like it cause it's more fun to say ;) )

Oh, and we call 'entrechat' a 'beat' and an entrechat is like a beat in reverse. The front foot crosses over the back foot (more than it already was from the fifth position start) and than crossed to the back, all in the one jump of the ground. It's sounds difficult/confusing, but they're a lot easier than 'beats.'

I was wonderin does anyone have a more technical or "correct" way of describin how to do the "foot shake" thingies. I really love them and I have put some in my sj that im choreographin, but there seems to be a few slightly different styles in doin them.

www.youtube.com . . . I know this is a vid from 1994 but that seems to be one of the moves that havent really changed much. one girl does them in 0.05. for example.

they seem to be more "shaking the whole leg", whereas some other people Ive seen to it don't seem to relax as much in their ankle and move the foot only, if you get what I mean.
Does anyone have anythin to say about them? :)

Ha! At my school...

Entrechats = swivels

crosskeys = a move which has no name & which no one but me does, but it's nice to know it's a real move finally :)

twists = run-backs

butterflies = the foot shakies...the way i do them, you shake from the hip, but it's like gears of different sizes -- the hip turns more subtley to flick the ankle so that it shakes back & forth quickly. we used to practice them by pushing down on a partner's hands while they lifted us up so we could do as many as possible in one go.

we have over,2,3's, turn,2,3's, hops, double-hops, hop-backs, double hop-behinds, hop-kicks, kicks & kick-outs are different, cuts, click-cuts, slice-clicks (beats or, in hard-shoe, those swivel-click dealies), back-clicks, slice-click behinds, bicycles, jumps, birdies (when you leap, but land on the back foot again), stag turns (on one foot) & three or four different types of heels...the list goes on.

she pretty much just makes up a name on the spot & expects you to get it.

does anybody know what the move is that Ciara Sexton did in her 2nd step at the world's POC...it's a leap with both legs crooked at about 45 degrees, one in front, one behind & they quiver if you do it right. I don't know what to call it to find the proper technique!

*edit* oh yeah! and we do the switch leap like others, except my teacher has us kick-out up to our head as we land it, rather than straight forward like in the vids I've seen. does anyone else do that?
