Poms looking for a new coach en>fr fr>en By Leslie3 Comments: 1, member since Tue Jan 14, 2003On Fri Dec 08, 2006 05:20 AM
My daughter is a junior in high school and on a POMS team. The coach is pregnant and we need to find a new coach for next year. Any suggestions? 1 Replies to looking for a new coach |

Where are you located? When I was in high school, our coaches were hired by the district as part of a sports staff. Perhaps your athletic director can put out an internal memo to all staff in the district to see if a teacher can take over for the time being (our varsity coach was an elementary school teacher who was a former dancer). Our JV coaches were former team memebers who were in college, maybe post something on a college job board or contact former members still in the area. Otherwise, set up a parent sign up to take turns on coaching. Most parents know what things are and aren't supposed to look like if their daughter has danced for at least a few years. A team shouldn't need a coach besides for keeping the team on track. My high school team would pick girls to choreograph different routines (including competition), they would teach the routine, and they would help clean it. We also had a strict structure to practice (warm up, stretch, technique, learn, etc.). If the team has some sort of set structure having parents watch to even just say, "hey, that part looked a little off" could probably suffice.
**sorry, I misread the post, I thought you were just looking for someone to take over until after the coach's pregnancy. Most of the stuff still applies, a parent who knows a thing or two about dance(as long as she doesn't play favorites) could still make a good coach. I have seen it done a time or two before. |
