I wouldn't choose Aaliyah because it is tied to an ethnic origin to me and i'm not a fan of using names like this unless there is some kind of a connection to that culture.

Yazmin/Jasmine - I prefer Jasmine out of the two, but i'm not fond of either.

Melanie - Seems quite dated

Anastasia - This one reminds me of a Russian child, but it's more usable than Aaliyah in my opinion

Sierra/Laylana/Niyah/Nila - All too trendy for me.

So Ruby's the only one left, and that's the one i'd choose because it's a classic. I very much prefer classic names, a good number of children in my brother's class at school (born 2001) have 'unique' names and it's just so hard to see the names eventually belonging to doctors, lawyers etc.

I would choose Aaliyah, but not exactly spelled that way. One 'a' would be enough for my daughter, LOL. I like the meaning, 'most high, exalted one'. It's a name fit for a queen. I also have an Arabic name as well as many of the people in my family, so naming my daughter Aliyah would be conceivable if I had a girl.

i don't even know how to pronounce some of those lol

well, i'm really one for more traditional names, so i'd probably go with melanie. plus the nickname mel is the cutest.

I didn't vote for any of them because I don't like any of them. If you name her Yazmin, she'll be stuck being teased about being a birth control pill.

I like classic names like Samantha, Evelyn, and Isabelle.

I voted for Ruby because it's an old-fashioned name. It's a good name for a baby and a good grown-up name.

Some of these sound more like an adult entertainer's name. :-\ PS - Naming your child with a "unique" name will not make them more unique.

Aalyiah- Too 'modern'
Ruby- Its ok but i find it slightly old fashioned.
Yazmin/Jasmine- Yazmin is the name of my BC pill so that would be a no-no, and jasmine doesnt really float my boat.
Nila- Dont like it.
Melanie- I suppose its a 'safe' name, but maybe a bit over-used.
Anastasia- Like someone else said, it reminds me of the Disney film of a russian girl. However, this is a name my boyfriend has picked for a MIDDLE name of any future daughter we may have. I like it, but not as a first name.
Sierra- I really like this name, my boyfriend doesnt. It reminds me of an old Ford car that we had here in the UK in the early 90's, which is what puts my boyfriend off.
Laylana- too much of a mouthful
Niyah- again, dont really like this.

Not being sarcastic or anything, but out of pure curiosity, what does that mean if a name is seen as too modern?

^ for me, too modern is a name that isnt really traditional, a name that came about recently and may be over-used. i.e i count the beckham kids' names to be modern (Brooklyn,Cruz) because they weren't around a long time ago. But its each to their own :P

Edited by Celebrian (127245) on 2007-01-30 18:06:11 I like that other name, too!
^Aaliyah is an ancient name in the Arabic/Hebrew/North&East African/Indian/Black American world. So it is by no means 'modern'! LOL

And looking at that list, I also like the name Yazmin, but spelled Yasmine (Yas-Meen).

I liked Sierra and Yazmin the best.

My sisters name is Yasmin, I think its a beautiful femminine name.

Chances of 'Yasmin' being the hot birth control pill by the time your daughter and her friends are old enough to recognize it, are slim to none.

And even then, It'll be less than 30% of the people she knows that know its birth control, so that doesnt deter me at all.

The only names I would even consider acceptable are Ruby, Melanie, Anastasia, and Jasmine. The others are far too trendy. Yes, I know Aaliyah is a real name with a history, but the sound and spelling of it is common with a lot of modern baby naming trends which I hate.
