Just thought I'd let everyone know that I've lost count of the amount of inappropriately given karma I've had to remove tonight. Oh, and did everyone know that karma abuse is actually a bannable offence? Because it is.

Karma is meant to be a fun way REWARDING those posts that really deserve it. Maybe someone went out of their way to give an extremely detailed answer to a question you asked. Maybe someone gave an excellent constructive criticism. Maybe someone just had a very well-thought out response.

Here are some examples of when karma should NOT be used:

* to "nice" comments
* to "thank-you's"
* to "thank you for saying nice things about me"
* to "well done's"
* to "you're such a great dancer" type comments
* to "Hi ___, see you at class on monday!" type posts
* to "oh you look beautiful in that costume!" type compliments
* to friends (simply for being friends)
* to family (simply for being family)
* disco mums doling out karma to people just for complimenting their children (nice does not equal 'deserving of karma')
* to photos or collages
* to links to photos or jokes (if all they did was cut and paste a link, that's karmaworthy... how?)
* for general asking of questions

* And this should go without saying, but DDN karma is NOT for rewarding things people have done outside of DDN, eg in real life. If someone was really nice to you on the weekend, that's cool and all... but why give them DDN karma for it?

The varieties of karma abuse on this forum really astound me.

A more detailed guide to karma can be found here: www.dance.net . . .

Please do not force us to remove the karma function because it is being misused. Additionally, if you see karma abuse, please MOD-REPORT IT!

Some quotes from the karma sticky in the Good Luck/Congratulations/Thank You forum:

I understand that the disco forum is a tight-knit community. That's great! But karma is not to be given just because someone is your friend, or because someone says something nice about you.

Karma is for well thought out, informative, or witty posts. It is a reward for people that help the site become more informative, or helpful to those around them.

While we love people being nice...that is not a reason to give someone karma. I have listed some links to karma worthy posts. The website is a much better place because people have taken time to write helpful advice to others.

We will remove karma when we can't figure out the reason someone would award it karma worthy. Saying a costume is nice does not qualify.

Hi

Thank you for doing this Glitterfairy and other mods, but it doesn't look like many people are reading this post :( It is a very important issue - I have seen people give karma to everyone who replied to their post before so it is clearly getting out of hand.

Pay attention people, we don't want to lose anyone from this board, as said before we are a tight-knit community and that's great! ;)

It's ok :) I know I can't force people to read announcements like this, or even moderator warnings. Happily though, "I didn't see the sticky" or "I didn't read your warning" isn't a valid excuse for getting out of a ban, so if people don't read the warnings we put up for them, it's their own fault :)

i am new to all this karma and did not know what it was all about until recently when someone showed me and told me that a comment of mine had been karmad. I do sometimes karma and I always look to see who has given it to me, and if I am reading a post I often look at other people who have been karmad(for some strange reason) and I have noticed that there seems to be a few people who are giving each other karma who are related. I also know that one of them actually teaches. I did not think teachers could give karma, but i may be wrong.

Any DDN member can give out karma. Family members can also give each other karma.

But really, I can't emphasise how important it is to use karma correctly. If a post is not deserving of karma, it is not deserving of karma - whether the OP is a friend or stranger it doesn't matter!

Hi, Although I have been signed up to DDN for sometime, I really dont have a clue about it!!! I know how to post a topic and make comments on ones that catch my eye, I find interesting or I feel I can offer some help/advice/good wishes or sympathy!

I really dont understand Karma or any of the other buzz words I often see like 'Sticky', 'PM me' and 'Mods' - to name a few!!!

Is there anyone out there (sure there is!) that can dumb it down for likes of me and tell me whats what! I love this site, and could literally spend hours on it reading and replying!! I dont have many friends becasue I'm slightly out the business now but I enjoy reading and offering advice, not only on Disco but Ballet, Jazz, Street & Tap!!

Anyway, RED1980 is waffling... HELP! if you can

Keep danicing!!!!
xx
