Ok ,
I was just wondering how many of us love what we are doing SOOO much that we will work through anything just to do it.

Please tell me a little of what you have to deal with.
I know we tend not to vent about it at work, but I know we would all LOVE to!!!!

You guys first!!!!
Don't be shy......

I didn't get an option to vote...

but yes, I'd vote other! When I demi-plie in second position, my turnout muscle hurts. It's been hurting on and off for quite a while, infact, it's getting worse and starting to hurt when I do anything with my right leg. I need to get my pilates teacher friend to fix me up!

Man, am I teaching in some awful pain sometimes. I have this problem with my feet that started way back in high school. I was stepping into an arabesque on releve (in flat shoes) during a performance of the Nutcracker and I got this shooting pain through the ball of my foot. For a long time, I had to wear these horrible insoles in my shoes and I couldn't wear anything but sneakers. Well, the problem will just flare up at any given time. It's horrible. It feels like a bone in the ball of my foot is just sticking out through the skin. All the pediatrists I've seen have just told me to keep wearing sneakers and insoles for the rest of my life. Hello? I live in my Chacos and flip flops! Really sucks....

Yup I have some good ol' back pain. I have a spinal fracture in my lower back and the same vertibrae also has excess movement, so it moves around and bumps into muscles and nerves! Painful! I haven't been able to dance since November and teaching has been rough! I was only thankful it didn't happen in September, when I would have had to demonstrate every single thing!

Wow, now I feel like a wuss for complaining about my back pain! (I don't believe anything is fractured, yikes! :( ) Usually by my 2nd or 3rd class oy lower back is ACHING just from standing, and if I do anything that involves more intense use of my back muscles, the next day I wake up VERY sore, sometimes with sharp pains. It's very bothersome. Also, my left inner thigh has been tight for some time now, and I just can't seem to stretch it out. The sad part is I'm only in my early twenties....yet my dad and I whine on the phone to each other about our back pain. Oh my.

I would go with everything pain!
Specially lately.

I have arthritis in my ankles, knees and hips. I have chronic tendonistis in my ankles, I also have something else wrong with my ankles to do with compression of the bones.

right now I am at that time of month and I usually get some severe cramping. The pill I'm on is supposed to stop that but it has decided to not want to work anymore...unfortunately plus it's been making me sick and I just realize that it was that, which was making me sick.

Ha ha...this could turn into quite the whining board. I'll stop now.

Usually it's just ankle pain. I slipped a tendon about 6 years ago and it never got fixed, but I've been managing ever since then, and it's not as bad as it has been in the past. Also, I have Achilles tendinitis that flares up from time to time, but it's better if I just constantly wear legwarmers.
When I do modern, I sometimes have to deal with my wrists in pain because not only am I managing carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists(I am also an avid knitter), I broke my left wrist 6 years ago(on stage during a pas de deux lift gone horribly wrong), and I will probably be dealing with arthritis because of it in the near future(or so the doctors say).
I used to have knee issues sometimes, but not lately. I really have to watch out when I demonstrate that I turn out from the hip and not the ankle, that's when I feel it in the left knee.

I have a lot less pain when I am working on recital stuff because I don't have to break down new steps and demonstrate full out so much.

The main one for me is ankle pain. I had crushed (yes, crushed) the talus and after two surgeries to try and repair it, I'm left with little cartilage left. I get a shot in the joint twice a year that helps quite a bit with mobility, but I still get pain on pretty much a daily basis. Basically, I can't plie on one side.

And then there's the on going neuroma on one foot.
The back pain from the two car accidents.
The tendonitis in my bad ankle.

Yes yes yes! I've suffered recurring knee pain since I was 15. It really makes doing 5 warm ups a day difficult. I have also developed some scar tissue in my hamstrings, and some days stretching is impossible. All of my kids wonder why I don't touch my nose to the floor while in a straddle, I say that I am just keeping an eye them!

Pinktights-

Thats how I started! The pain used to be uncomfortable, but not bad enough to stop moving. Your description of your back pain sounds exactly like mine was before it got worse. I would check your posture while teaching, and really watch that your lower back isn't arched or swayed, because that can lead to mega-problems! I wouldn't want your back to get as bad as mine! i'm also in my early 20s, and trust me, it's no fun!

Luv

I voted foot pain, as I have a stress fracture that has healed, but the bone is still inflammed...the only way to stop the pain is to have surgery and take the bone out...when do I have time to stay completely off my feet for 2-3 months!?!

I also have hip pain the comes and goes. Getting old is terrible!!!

Though while I'm teaching I don't notice the pain the much...it's laying in bed after 6 hours of ballet classes when I can feel what I've done to myself...lol

I have crazy foot pain and haven't a clue what it is~! In the morning it takes me a while to be able to walk, but by night time, I can DANCE~! Now my question is, do you tell your students you are in pain? I have a tendency not too, but every now and then when they tell me about how doing the splits is literally going to kill them, I tell them that I am in agony every day~!

Well, my main problem used to be back pain, but lately it has been my knees some nights they feel like they are on fire. Oh and my hip just pops in and out and gives out when ever it feels like it. I started that pain 3 years ago when I was pregnent with my 3rd child I think her big head pulled my pelvic bone out of it's socket or something LOL!

Shim Sham, You need to go to the doc. You might have what I have. It is called Planter Faschitis. It is whan your tendon in your foot gets so thight that it pulls your bone out and causes a bone spur from your heel on the bottom of your foot towards the arch of your foot!!!
My doctor has been talking about surgery. I actually ruptured the tendon that is causing the heel spur just one week after he gave me a cortizone shot in my FOOT!!!! I had to teach in a cast for two weeks and then a boot for 3 months!!! It was terrible. There are insoles that are supposed to help with it though. get them before you have more problems. Or wearing your tennis shoes help too. also take a towel put it over the ball of your foot and pull back on your foot every morning before you step foot on the floor. You should hold it for 30 srconds each and repeat 4 or 5 times.

Whatever this mystery foot pain at the ball of my foot is could go away any time. I have seen a Dr. and now off to get x-rays.The pain shoots up through my foot , but it feels like I am stepping on a bone coming out of my foot. After teaching for 4 - 5 hours I am hardly walking. Yes I have the orthotics but I am also looking for a sturdier tap shoe to take some of the pounding away.

I had achilles tendonitis 2 years ago and it never fully went away i still have pain for that sometimes, however yesterday I started having a sharp pain on the outside of my foot just under the pinky toe. Not sure what that is about but hope it doesnt last. I also suffered a bout of back pain this year, last year 3 stress fractures between 2 legs. Always something.

Fun, fun and fun-er.

Mine are much more minor than the above:

* Neck/shoulder/back pain (inflammation and muscles that cramp up at the drop of a coin. Not fun)

* Sore feet!!!! Just from being on my feet for so long... I don't know how other teachers deal with it!

Thanks for the advice Kaydence, I will definitely be paying more attention this week to how I stand in class (esp. since I'm trying to get my students to MEMORIZE what we know of recital choreo....so i JUST stand much more!) Good luck with your back pain, it's no good, I know :(
