I always deal with getting cuts in the creases at the bottom of my toes. They hur tpretty badly but I use a skin sealer to close them up after washing it out really well. I think the brand is Nexcare or something like that. The bottle and brush look like a little nail polish bottle.

Okay, here's another foot-care issue that I'm sure many dancers suffer with...bunions :S

I think I got mine mostly from pointe work, although I'm sure dancing in bare feet dosen't really help either. Any tips?

It isn't pleasant but you can have them removed. It will take you away from dancing for a while. I would consult a doctor to way out the odds...

does anyone have advice on how to prevent/treat splits? I do the liquid bandage thing but when you dance multiple hours a day and they just get worst and worst it isn't the best solution...

^

There is this type of bandage called elsotoplast. Bascically you take a lighter and heat up the adheisive side and it sticks throughout the entire day or even longer. It's a little bit hard to find and is pretty expensive. Look for it at drugstores.

Elastoplast is amazing, especially if you have weak ankles. Also try zinc oxide tape, not stretchy but extremely supportive.

this is a really good post :) I have a quick question, I love dancing bare foot and most people do in modern at my studio, I just don't like how my feet squeek on the floor when I do turns and movement involving turning on the balls of my feet, does anyone know how to avoid this without having to wear shoes? Thanks so much :)

Hmm I am hesistant about buying footundeez but at the same time it would make me feel more comfortable in my modern class.
I tried going barefoot and our teacher told us all to put shoes on since most of us couldn't do turns :/ so I don't get to work on toughening up my feet. I don't like wearing jazz shoes in that class, or at all really because I feel like my feet are trapped, so I just wear socks :( But slowly I think my feet are getting tougher... although I'm still considering footundeez for my modern class.

For modern, I dance barefoot. I do have Capezio FootUndeez but I only use them once in a blue moon. I use them more in lyrical.

Dancing bear-foot is fun (and cheep) and I love to do it when I can.

There are sometimes when the floor is in bad shape, as has been mentioned, that I am very glad I have my foot thongs.

I have also found that dancing with foot thongs helps keep the tendinitis in my Achilles tendon from flaring up. I always take my foot wear to class, just in case.

the blisters and calyces will help you in the future. They may hurt now but the hard parts you get under your feet, can be used just the like "modern shoe." This way you can dance barefoot without having to use one of those silly thong sandles gloves things.
