in my last thread here I ask if somebody has any idea on how to shorten a vamp. I have really short toes and need a vamp that is not longer than 6cm (ending right above my toes) or i'm not able to get completely on the box ... finding a shoe with such a short vamp is kind of impossible and now i started experimenting a bit ;)

this is what they looked like before ... not that we don't know this sight ;)
Image hotlink - 'http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c124/tine_in_goe/ballet/CIMG0369.jpg'

first you cut open the seam that holds the fabric that encloses the drawsting
Image hotlink - 'http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c124/tine_in_goe/ballet/CIMG0371.jpg'

do it on both sides up to where the side seam is
Image hotlink - 'http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c124/tine_in_goe/ballet/CIMG0373.jpg'

now cut out the fabric part of the vamp as low as you need it
Image hotlink - 'http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c124/tine_in_goe/ballet/CIMG0374.jpg'

to get the different layers of fabrics back together darn them the way you would darn the platform (you know what I mean???)
Image hotlink - 'http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c124/tine_in_goe/ballet/CIMG0376.jpg'

now place the covering fabric together with the drawstring back in place and secure them with some needles
Image hotlink - 'http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c124/tine_in_goe/ballet/CIMG0377.jpg'

now securely sew it back on the pointe ... i did it with small stitches what builds a strong seam!
ALWAYS make sure that you can still use the drawsting while sewing!!
Image hotlink - 'http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c124/tine_in_goe/ballet/CIMG0379.jpg'

and tadaaaaa!!! now you have a shorter vamp that will make dancing on it easier :]

Warning!
1. make sure that you now how low you want to have your
vamp before you start cutting!!!
2. make sure that you build strong seams while sewing
3. don't sew trough the drawsting!
4. only do this kind of modification of you have experience
with pointes and know exactly that you need a low vamp!!!
5. try it out first with an old pair so you wont ruin a
brand new pair!!!

last thing to say is HAPPY SEWING!!!

wow... I had no idea you could do that as well...

could you also show pics of your feet in the "high vamp" pointes and in the "low vamp" pointes. I would be interested to see the difference ;)

Very cool! I'm impressed that you managed to do that. I've been trying to figure out how to make the heels more narrow lately so I'm glad to see there are other people who cut open their shoes! :) I feel like a cobbler half the time!!

I've been wondering how to shorten my repettos' vamp for about the past 2 months. I didn't even get to dance in them because of this.
Now I will ,once I'm back in classes, thanks to you!
Karma for this one!

Maybe now I'll be able to save my custom Suffolks! I requested an additional 1/2inch in the vamp and I think they must have added an inch or more because it looks like the shoe is entirely vamp!

Wow...that is wonderful. Thanks for posting.

What's the maximum that you can cut off, though? Can it only be a little bit, like a quarter of an inch, or could it be a whole inch? I'd imagine the binding wouldn't reach down if you cut too much off....unless you wanted the two ends of the binding separated a little. (Sorry, I can't really explain it too well!)

@Lissbirds: theoretically you can cut it down t a little bit over where your box starts. with my blochs the drawstring is rather long so an inch wouldn't be too much of a problem.

It depends on how long the drawstring is. And if you have a lot of patience than you could also replace the old one with a longer one, but it takes ages to do that.

good luck

Now I think I understand why they have that "drop-stitching" on Freed vamps...I'm guessing it's so dancers could cut down the vamp and skip the third step (where you blanket stitch/whip stitch the layers together.) If the vamp is pre-sewn like that, it saves you some trouble. I had always wondered why that drop-stitching was there...maybe it's not just for aesthetics!

Again, great post, and thanks for responding to me! I'll have to find an old pair of shoes and do a little experimenting.

Wow!!!
This is an excellent idea, and you did it perfect!!! Is a great idea when you can’t find shorter vamps. I could try this with my old pointe shoes just to figure it out if that makes a difference to me.
Excellent tip!

..... and pictures.... piece of cake.... look easier right??? I hope I will be.

Thanks for the info. I just did my Bloch Aspirations and now they have a nice V vamp. The fabric that covers the drawstring started to fray at the ends a bit, but I think I did ok. I will try to take a photo soon.
