I could never choose between the jig and hornpipe as they are so different! But I'm better at the hornpipe, that's for sure!

This is kind of off the subject here, but someone here should be able to answer my question:

In relation to highland dancing, what is the difference between a jig and a hornpipe?

In irish, the hornpipe is a hardshoe dance done at 2/4 timing, and the jig is either a soft shoe dance or a hardshoe dance, at I think 3/4 timing.

I do both Irish and Highland..
and in Highland the Jig is done in ghillie like shoes with a tap on the heel, they are either red, Green, or black somtimes, and the costume is a red, or green dress with a white underskirt( boys ware leprachan-style green/red suits, they are goofy looking)

In the hornpipe its done in a sailor suite in our usual soft ghillies.. they are both character dances done at the higher levels of compettions and shows in character costumes that conform to our regulations. ( wich are much more strict and complex then the Irish dance regs. )

JIGJIGJIG!!! the jig is so much more fun than the hornpipe. I like to stomp around on stage and getting to pick a lot of cool steps. Theres so much variety in the jig and hornpipe, but I find it easier to get into character while im doing the jig rather than the hornpipe. I tend to place more in the hornpipe though... but 6 step jig got my vote:)

I just learned the Jig and it's awesome! The Hornpipe is fun, but not as fun as the 4 step JIG!
Bye!

I loved dancing the jig. I t gave me an opportunity to work out some frustrations and shake my fists around instead of having to smile all the time!

I really like both of them because in the hornpipe I pretend that I am a pirate!!1 and in the jig I like to stomp around but I was practising the jig break and stamped on my toe!!

I think 6 steps is too long but 5 is just right and your feet don't hurt after it!!! :] Irene!!!x!!! ;]

It's got to be the horpipe for me too, I am so rubbish at the Jig. I have been placed in my hornpipe every time I Dance, I got a 1st on Saturday but I hardly ever get anything for my jig. My Mum says it's because I don't look angry enough!!!!

The hornpipe outfit always makes me feel so silly! I hate preforming it public infront of my friends!even though I absolutely love the dance (especially the second step) and I love the jig dress and shoes!!
these are my two favorite dances soo it was a hard desision but I choose HORNPIPE! (4)

I already voted a while ago and posted but I changed my mind. I am no longer scared of the shoes!! I like 5-step Jig bcause there are 2 steps I can't decide between and 2 that I LOVE and then theres the first step. The plus side is I am a theatre girl, so I LOVE being in chatacter! Wow, so much change since the last competition I was in!
