About Bare Escentuals

The Bare Escentuals company has been around since 1976, but has just recently become the new idea in makeup in the past 5 years. The company was one of the first if not the first to introduce a new concept in makeup; mineral foundation.

Bare Escentuals has focused on using only the finest ingredients in our products. This commitment led to the creation of our revolutionary mineral makeup called bareMinerals®. Made with crushed minerals from the earth, 100% pure bareMinerals are free of preservatives, talc, oil, fragrance and other potential skin irritants. All ages and skin types can benefit from our feather-light 100% pure bareMinerals, but especially those concerned with skin sensitivities, allergies, scars, blemishes, rosacea, wrinkles and pigmentation.

Bare Escentuals Products

Bare Escentuals has become known for its Bare Minerals foundation, but the company has grown to include hundreds of products for your beauty needs. Products include, but are not limited to:

Multi Tasking Minerals (concealer, eye shadow base, foundation, etc)
All over Face Color (blushes, bronzer, etc)
Mineral Veil (the finishing touch)
Eyeshadows
Eyeliners
Mascara
Lip (liners, lipsticks, glosses)
Assorted Brushes
rareMinerals (skin revival)

So what do these products do?

Bare Escentuals can be a bit intimidating at first. Bisque, bare minerals, mineral veil? Many people have no clue where to even begin! Here is a brief summary of a few Bare Escentuals Products:

Bisque
Bisque is Bare Escentual's version of a concealer. Like all of Bare Escentual's face products, Bisque is in the form of powder. This product is applied directly to blemishes, broken capillaries, dark under eye circles, discoloration, scars, and other skin imperfections. Bisque works best if applied with the Maximum Coverage Concealer Brush.

Other products that you might want to check out include Well Rested for Eyes and Natural Light Face Lifting Duo.

Bare Minerals SPF 15 Foundation
This is what we all think of when we hear about Bare Escentuals. The foundation is of course in powder form and is made of Earth's finest minerals. It "...looks like a powder, feels like a cream and buffs on like silk, giving skin a natural luminosity." Speaking with experience, I can truthfully say that this foundation gives the flawless airbrush look we all strive for without looking cakey, dry, or streaky. This product looks best if applied with a Buki brush or flawless application brush.

Warmth
Warmth is commonly mistaken for bronzer, but it's not! Warmth is a complexion booster that can be used year round. This can be warn ontop of bare minerals foundation or mixed in to give your skin a sun kissed look. Although I always had this product I was unaware of it's powers and was scared of its dark pigmentation. The trick to warmth, like all other Bare Escentuals products, is a little goes a long way. I do not feel orange or fake tanned when I wear this, but feel as if my complexion is given a healthy glow that makes me look more awake. People with every skin color and tone can use this product! Warmth looks best if applied with the flawless application brush.

Mineral Veil
Mineral Veil is the final step in the Bare Escentuals complexion system. This is a transluscent powder that is to be warn over the SPF 15 foundation and any other prodcuts you may use such as Bisque, Warmth, or any of the All over face colors (blushes). Bare Minerals adds the final touch to your face. "It morphs into your skin, infusing it with softness and light, giving the beautiful illusion you achieve with a soft-focus camera lens." If you want to touch up your makeup through out the day it is suggested to only apply Mineral Veil and none of other bare minerals complexion products. It is suggested that users apply Mineral Veil with the flawless applications blush.

So how exactly do I apply the stuff?
Bare Escentuals complexion products are pretty much applied the same way. After using the product for a while you may find that the powder sticks to the lid of the pot. More often than not this powder is plenty! THat is the beauty of BE, it goes a long long way and lasts a long time! Just dip your brush lightly into the pot (or the lid) and then swirl the brush into the lid. Tap the brush on the side of the lid and begin "buffing" the product into the skin with circular motions. The more you buff the creamier and more "airbrushed" the product will look on your skin as the minerals begin to melt into your pores. Less warmth should be used on the skin than foundation or mineral veil. Blushes too. All BE colors are highly highly concentrated, which is why you do not need to use so much!

I am scared to use powder eyeshadows and eyeliners. Do you have any advice for me?
Many BE users only use the foundation and mineral veil. They are simply scared of trying something new! But I say don't knock it till you've tried it! There is no difference in the application of powder eyeshadows and the run of hte mill pressed powder eyeshadows you typically see. BE is also fun because it is very easy to mix and match the large array of colors. Again, the pigment is very concentrated so a little goes a long way. Simply swirl in the lid, tap, and apply like any other eyeshadow!

Powder eyeliner takes a little bit more practice, but is no different than applying other eyeliners with a brush. Swirl the color in the lid and tap. Close one eye and begin on the outside of the lid and draw a line to the inner corner of your eye. If you find it helpful (like I do) pull the outer corner of your lid tight so the brush moves smoother. You can use another brush to smudge the eyeliner a bit to give it a less harsh look. This is just how I apply it, so if you would rather start from the inside and work your way out, or have another technique then go for it!

How much does it cost?
Prices of the prodcuts vary. It is costly but not out of this world. I cannot stress enough how worth it is though. Even drug store mineral products do not compare. You can view prices at bareescentuals.com

Sounds Interesting..but where do I buy the stuff?
Bare Escentuals products are beginning to show up everywhere! Bare Escentuals products can be found at:

bareescentuals.com
QVC (and qvc.com)
Sephora (and sephora.com)
Ulta (and ulta.com)
Nordstrom
Macy's
Various stores and Bare Escentuals Boutiques in Washington, Florida, California, Texas, Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Georgia.

Okay, you have told me a little about the company and products..but come on! Does it really work?

Well I have been using the product for 5 years and I haven't looked back. I started wearing makeup at about 10 years old and experimented with different types, products, and brands. At about 13-14 years old my mom bought Bare Escentuals for me and my other two sisters off of QVC. All 4 of us haven't looked back yet! Now I see my friends using it too! It is great stuff.

Still don't believe me? Here are some pictures for you of a step by step look at how Bare Escentuals works. Stay tuned for pictures of different Bare Escentuals Products.

*** I am very self conscious and rarely let my face be seen without makeup, but I am sacrificing this for all of my friends here at DDN. Feel special :)

It's nice to see someone finally post pictures and proof that it really does work!

So many of us on here preach about it, and how great and amazing it is, but now maybe this will help people realize that we're not kidding!

Here are pictures of the products I used in the pictures:

COMPLEXION PRODUCTS AND THEIR BRUSHES FROM THE TOP: bisque and full coverage concealer brush, foundation and handy buki brush, warmth and flawless application brush, blush and I don't know the name but an angled all over face color brush, and mineral veil with feather light brush (not the suggested brush for Mineral Veil but with experience and experimentation I have found it works best for me!)

I use Blue Black eye liner (sometimes Humor. and blue black really looks like black black lol). I apply this with the thin side of a double ended brush. There is a thinner brush specifically for eyeliner, but for years I had no clue I was using the wrong one! However, this brush works for me so I haven't bothered buying the real eyeliner brush. Also, from darkest to lightest eyeshadows-Intuition and Pure Spice mixed for my crease, True Gold on my lid, and Gossamer on my brow bone.

The mascara has a double sided brush. Short close together bristles for volume and long farther apart bristles for length. The color is black.

The brow finishing was clear but after use has turned a little brown. Still goes on clear though!

OTHER BRUSHES I OWN AND LIKE NEVER USE HAHA

and I have about 46 eyeshadows, but I didn't post them haha.

I will probably post some more pictures of myself later wearing BE. These pictures are not the most flattering as I took them myself, and I feel like the other pictures will give you a look at what I look like on a day to day basis.

Thanks for a GREAT post! I've been using BE for about 8 months now and I can't ever imagine putting anything else on my face. Your post will be really helpful for anyone looking for a fresh way to look at makeup.

The only thing I wish they would do differently with the Bare Escentuals make up is make the tops a little different.

Maybe it's just me, but when I pack them up to go away or anything, they pour all into the caps and it drives me nuts so I tap it back into the containers haha. I wish they made them more like salt/pepper shakers that have those twisty tops - so nothing pours out into the caps if they get turned upside down. Does that make sense?

And tiny_dancer - I can't believe how much you have!!!

What would you recommend for a first time buyer?

I'm heading on a massive shopping spree to another city (which has Sephora) in June/early July and I'm thinking about buying some of these products then. I was reading up on Bare Escentuals, but there's so much stuff! I don't necessarily have a price limit for products, but I don't want to overload on makeup.

I just bought MAC concealer and foundation a while ago, so I don't know if I want to buy more foundation and stuff. Can you use some of the products on top of non-Bare Escentuals products?

I'm jealous everytime- so stop it! heh heh. Hopefully I'll work enough this summer so that my poor college butt can finally buy this stuff.

Bare Escentuals is Bare Minerals!!!! People confuse the names and think they are different products. Bare Escentuals is the company. Bare Minerals are their patented products containing bare minerals (basically all of their makeup).

Jeannie1-yes that makes complete sense! I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes you lose a tad bit of makeup when you transfer it into the pot from the lid, which is annoying. I actually have a couple of prodcuts that use the exact system you described!

Bare Minerals Bisque/Well Rested for Eyes Duo
and
Natural Light Well Lit-Back Lit duo

obviously they use the "salt and pepper shaker" system because there are two products in one container, but they really should do it for everything!

RingingPhone - Bare Minerals has a starter kit actually! That's what I bought. It was $60 at Ulta, but it's $135 value or something like that, so it's totally worth it.

Just go into Sephora or Ulta and tell them that you are interested in buying the starter kit, and they'll tell you which one you need, depending on your skin tone :]

Jeannie here is a pic of those products I was talking about for you to see!

Image hotlink - 'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v202/kellbell1188/bare%20escentuals/fall.jpg'
pretty cool, huh?

Ringing Phone- Jeannie is right. There are foundation starter kits that include a couple of prodcuts. I am not sure which ones, but I assume they are foundation, warmth, and mineral veil.

I don't see why you can't use the products with other brands. I would think you could use the warmth and blushes with your MAC. You can most definitely use the eyeshadows, eyeliners, lip products, and mascara.

Also, I often use different brands of blushes mascaras and eyeshadows with my bisque, foundation, warmth, and mineral veil depending on my mood.

I forgot to mention that sleeping in the stuff won't hurt you. I have done this on many occasions when I am out late or just too tired to wash my face! I generally have clear skin unless I am about to start my period, and I haven't seen BE make me break out once during the past 5 years. However, be sure to clean your brushes every so often otherwise oil and bacteria from your skin will build up in them and that can make you break out (just like ANY brushes could). I just use some baby shampoo and conditioner, rinse it all out, and set to air dry. They have cleaner spray you can buy, but this system works fine for me so I don't feel the need to buy it.

I'm excited to buy this stuff now!

One more question- is it recommended that you use B.E. brushes with their products? Are their brushes any different from other good quality brushes?

I know this isn't my post, but I'm another Bare Mineral-ite, so I'll help out!

One more question- is it recommended that you use B.E. brushes with their products? Are their brushes any different from other good quality brushes?

The brushes are recommended to use with their products, for the best application. If you buy their kits, you actually get all the brushes you need with it.

Since I'm on a budget, I will purchase the kits when they come out - I get all the complimentary colors I need, and all the brushes I need to put them on. And it's way, WAY cheaper to buy it that way, then to buy it alone! :)

What would you recommend for a first time buyer?

I'd recommend two things:

Their starter kit. It has two shades of foundation (which, according to the company, is to help assure a perfect match), Mineral Veil (sort of the Bare Minerals answer to loose powder), Warmth, the Skin Rever-upper (moisturizer), all the brushes you need to apply it, and a DVD with some helpful instructions and tips for application.

And I said the same thing about the DVD - "If I have to watch a video to learn how to put this makeup on, do I really want it?" It's worth it to watch it, because you get some tips and tricks that I know I would have never thought of by myself.

What store you go to depends on the kit. The kit at Ulta is different then the one at Sephora, for example.

I'd also recommend their Beyond The Basics kit. It includes the Bisque, Summer Bisque (the same product, just with a golden beige undertone), Glee (the same product as Warmth, just in a mauve), Bare Radience (kind of the same product as Warmth, but just gives a little glow, no real color), Faux Tan (bronzer), and the brushes you need for that.

When you buy the kits, the sizes are a little smaller then you'd get if you bought all the products one at a time, but for as much money as you save buying the kits, and for as long as the products last (I bought my starter kit in December, I'm still not out of foundation), it's totally worth it.

I've been watching the infomercial alot lately, and the girls on the infomercial conceal with the actual foundation, instead of the bisque. I'm going to have to try that.

I'm going to a Bare Minerals class tomorrow at my Ulta. Super excited!

Yeah I totally recommend buying kits as Theresa said. That is how I have accumulated so much! Most of my brushes came in kits. They are always coming out with new ones and I get them as gifts at pretty much every holiday.

I never purchased the starter kit because they didn't have those back in the day when I started wearing it, but I would definitely take the advice of the other users and buy it if it is your first time. If the video is anything like the infomercial I woud watch it. You do not apply it like any old loose powder, and there are definitely techniques to making it look great.

As for the brushes--I HIGHLY recommend them. People don't understand that the tools you use to apply your makeup (no matter what brand) is just as important as the makeup itself. I have never used anything but Bare Escentuals brushes for my Bare Escentuals makeup, so I don't know what the results would be like. But they do make certain brushes that cater to the application of the makeup. Like the Handy Buki brush is highly highly concentrated with tight bristles to help buff in foundation. It Works better for foundation than the flawless application brush IMO. Good quality brushes do come with a price, but if you buy any of the BE kits you will save a ton of money on brushes.

Thanks so much for this! I've been seriously considering buying this for a while now but was questioning whether or not it'd be worth the money. I'm in crisy's boat: waiting for the summer job to splurge on it. I can't wait now, that stuff looks incredible!

Anyone with super-oily skin and/or acne have any experience with this stuff? I'm waging a constant battle of the shine!

I have heard so many great things about Bare Escentuals. Your post is making me want to purchase some of their products even more! Once I have the money saved, I plan on going to Sephora and asking an employee to help me pick out some products. It really does seem like a great investment.

Yes of course Calypso. I actually realized I should have done that the other day, but I had done so much picture stuff by then that my computer started to hate me!! Here is the picture:

I've been curious about this for a while. You look lovely, by the way, with or without makeup.

About how long does it take you each day to do your makeup? The buffing thing sounds like it would take longer than typical makeup which I just smear into my skin if it's liquid or cream, or sweep quickly across with brushes if it's powder.

And it sounds like it doesn't negatively affect people with oily skin. Do you know how well it works for people with dry skin? Or if it works well on top of a moisturizer or sunblock?

Thanks for all the info and taking the time to do this thread!!

Again, just giving my opinion...

About how long does it take you each day to do your makeup?

Once you get the hang of doing it, it takes no time at all. The other day, I got out my stuff and just played, and, purposely taking a long time, my entire face (eyeliner, mascara, lips, the whole bit) took 30 minutes.

I went to a class last night with a Bare Minerals artist that had flown in from Chicago for the class, and she said she did her entire face (again, eyeliner, mascara, the works) in the cab on the way to the airport.

And, they've got a girl on their infomercial that does the foundation, warmth and mineral veil in 30 seconds.

And it sounds like it doesn't negatively affect people with oily skin. Do you know how well it works for people with dry skin? Or if it works well on top of a moisturizer or sunblock?

I've got dry, sensitive skin, and I love it very much. I use my moisturizer every day, let it absorb a minute, and put the foundation on. They actually recommend you use it with a moisturizer, because it goes on better.

It's also got broad spectrum SPF 30 in the foundation, so you wouldn't really need EXTRA SPF on top of that.

The before and after pictures are really great! Could you post (or PM me) some ingredient lists? I'm just curious as to what's actually in it.

I agree with Theresa. I have combination type skin (some oily spots, some dry spots). I use moisterizer every day and put BE on over it. It goes on really really well that way.

it takes me 20 mins to do my makeup in the morning. BUt then again I take my dear old time AND i do the whole shabang (with eyeshadow, liner, and mascara). My eyeshadow is what takes the most time not because of the BE (I don't even always use BE eyeshadow), but because I like to use lots of different colors at once and blend it really well. I have painted since I was 6, so sometimes I get a little carried away and treat my face like my canvas lol!

I can put bisque, foundation, warmth, blush, and mineral veil on in about 2 minutes if I need to.

hang_time 15-sorry I do not know the list of ingredients. I have never taken the time to look into that and I'm not even sure a full list is available!

I must get this. I've always wanted it, but now with the pictures, I really want it!

My mom and sisters want it too.

This just adds another reason as to why I need a job!

A couple of tips that I learned from my class:

When it comes to the powder coming out of the sifters, the artist suggested that when you open a new product, you leave the seal on, and simply take a pin, and poke a hole in two of the slots.

You'll still get plenty of product to use, but you don't have to worry about so much of it coming out.

She was also explaining how to know when to use bisque, or summer bisque. She said that if your covering up something brown (like freckles) that you would use the bisque as your concealer, but if you were covering up something red, like acne, that you would use summer bisque, because summer bisque contains the right tones to cover up acne.

And, from the FAQ on bareminerals.com:

Q: What is in bareMinerals SPF15 foundation?
A: It's what's NOT in bareMinerals that's important. 100% pure bareMinerals is free of preservatives, talc, oils, fragrances and other potential skin irritants. bareMinerals foundation is made of only five ingredients:

* Titanium Dioxide
* Zinc Oxide
* Mica
* Iron Oxide
* Bismuth Oxychloride

Q: Does bareMinerals offer sun protection?
A: Yes, bareMinerals SPF15 foundation is chemical-free, and has a natural SPF 15. Our foundation proudly carries the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation.

Q: How do I apply bareMinerals?
A: It's as easy as "Swirl, Tap, Buff." Carefully shake a small amount of bareMinerals into the lid. Swirl your brush in the lid until the minerals are in the tucks and tapers of the brush. Tap off any excess product using the handle of the brush and side of the lid. Buff in circular motions onto the face until desired amount of coverage is achieved.

Q: Why are two different shades of bareMinerals foundation included in the offer?
A: We've included two shades to ensure that you get a perfect match for your complexion. Some skin tones change from winter to summer, and some women like to blend their bareMinerals for different looks. You'll find that bareMinerals foundation is very forgiving and the two tones will cover your shade range.

Q: How long will bareMinerals foundation last?
A: When you buff bareMinerals foundation into the skin, it stays all day. bareMinerals won't sweat off or fade during a workout or even in hot humid weather. Go ahead and stay out all night¬óbareMinerals is so pure you can sleep in it.

Q: Can bareMinerals foundation really give me complete coverage?
A: bareMinerals covers a wide range of skin imperfections, including sun spots, rosacea and acne. You can apply as much or as little as you like to achieve the look of flawless, beautiful bare skin.

Q: Does Bare Escentuals test products on animals?
A: We do NOT test any of our products on animals.

Q: How do I care for my Bare Escentuals brushes?
A: We recommend regular cleansing to prolong the life of your brushes. Clean your brushes by using a mild facial cleanser or body wash. Start with soapy water in the palm of your hand and gently swirl the brush until it is clean. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and squeeze out excess water. Fluff and reshape the head of the brush. Finally, place your brush on a flat surface with bristles hanging
over the edge.

Q: Does bareMinerals work with problem skin?
A: Yes. bareMinerals has protective and calming benefits. bareMinerals is dermatologist-tested and are perfect for a range of skin conditions including acne, rosacea, sensitive skin, dry skin and oily skin.

Q: Will bareMinerals conceal fine lines and wrinkles?
A: Traditional makeup can settle into lines on the face. bareMinerals has a creamy texture that buffs onto your skin flawlessly and will not settle into lines and wrinkles. In fact, bareMinerals' unique, natural luminosity actually refracts light away from lines and wrinkles, softening the look of your skin.

Q: I have oily skin and get shiny during the day. What should I do?
A: Mineral Veil will absorb oil and will give you a natural, shine-free, natural finish. It's completely sheer and won't ever get cakey, so reapply as often as you need throughout the day.
