Bumped by hylndlas (107168) on 2007-05-31 19:53:34

We have had an increase of incidents of people replying to old for sale threads just to star farm or to bring the thread back to the top.

Please don't do this.

If you post on a thread please only do so if you are interested in buying said item.

Thanks!

THANK YOU!

I can't stand when old posts get bumped up because of people star farming. I have mod reported so many!

Thanks-I was noticing this too. In fact, I had posted something and it was all the way to the bottom of the first page a couple of hours later because of all the dress pix that had been replied to.

*high five* Good one, thanks for saying this! It gets really annoying when those threads keep getting bumped because of that, and I bet that it sure gets the original posters' hopes up when they open their email and have a notification that their thread has been replied to. ;)

^ Star Farming is posting pointless comments to raise your comment total, to get more stars by your name. Its something that is frowned up on,on DDN.

I think this is a good post as often new items that are for sale get bumped down due to all of the comments that just comment on the item and then no one really gets a chance to see them.

Claire.

*EDIT* Just an idea. Would it be possible to have 2 for sale boards? One for costumes and another for Irish Dancing Accessories/Other. For shoes, wigs, dress bags, buckles and dance sneakers, etc?

Thanks for this. My post about searching for a new dress for my dd made it to the bottom of the second page in a couple of hours. I came back to check on it and couldn't find it! Normally, threads stay on the front page for a couple of days.

THANK YOU! It bothers me that people compliment dresses without expressing an intrest in buying the dress. It is always nice to compliment a dress, but when selling a dress people only want to hear offers, not compliments. Thyanks again for pointing this out, i think it has been bothering many of us on ddn

When I was a dress seller, I valued comments about the dress I offered. They helped me rewrite my description and select a better photo.

I appreciate the issue of star farming, but legitimate comments are always welcome if I have something for sale.

^ I value comments to, but not 'Oh what a lovely dress, it's too small tho'' While that's nice it really doesn't add anything to what you're saying.

Now if someone asks if there's any room for let out etc etc then that's a good enough comment.

It's generally new members who seem to look for every dress that's being sold in the For Sale section and drag them all back up to the top with 'Lovely dress' just to get their stars...it is annoying when there are current threads being pushed down the pages....

Sorry, it is a gripe of mine :? Even when it's one of mine!!!

Just wanted to bring this back to the top.Hylndlas makes a very good point! Bringing the dress posts back to the top pushes newer posts off the first page. And as all the replys have said it's really annoying!! ;)

Yeah, I hate it when people just write "I love this dress!!!!", although I do like hearing comments about dresses, like Realtreble said. I think it's okay to give an OCCASIONAL comment on a dress, but not with super old threads.

I'm just a newbie and wondering: How does one keep your dress for sale on the first 2 pages, if people don't post comments to it?

I have a question. I recently replied to a "for sale" post that I was interested in a dress and then asked a couple of questions about the dress (how well the fabric on the dress held up, stuff like that.) A few hours later, my comment was deleted, and the mod's reason was, "If you want to ask a question, please PM the OP. It's not difficult."

When I PMed the mod as to why my question was the only one she said should have been PMed, she said that it was because I expressed no interest in buying the dress (even though I directly stated in my post "I am interested in buying this dress") and then accused me of "star farming", which I later had to look up to find out what it meant.

Could someone please explain to me why the mod said that my question should have been PMed yet the other questions on the post were not deleted?

I don't want to rant, I just want some clarification so that I can continue to try to follow the rules.

Only they can answer this question.

I did. She gave me no explanation.

EDIT: She PMed me back, but I felt like it didn't explain why my second comment was deleted.

Since you keep insisting on dragging this out to the public forum, I'll answer your question here.

It's not a case of you being specifically targeted for breaking the rules. On the same thread, I deleted a comment asking about the dancer's wig. So please don't think you're being singled out. I also received your PM only *yesterday*, so just because I didn't respond instantaneously doesn't mean I'm ignoring your concerns. The mods have really busy lives and schedules outside of DDN, so give us a break.

Having said that, I'm not born yesterday and I'm not convinced you were actually interested in the dress in question. I find it incredibly fishy that you first posted in a thread offering a random factoid, and then your post got deleted. All of a sudden now that it got removed, you're REALLY interested? And write a whole bunch of filler specifically so it "won't get deleted?" I'm not buying it. We try to keep the forums as useful as we can to sellers so that they can get their dresses SOLD, not get a whole bunch of comments saying "ooooh, that's so pretty!" Unfortunately compliments don't pay for the new Siopa Rince that has to be paid for in full in two weeks.

If you are actually, genuinely interested? Rock on, go ahead and post and ask your questions. I just think it's kind of crummy to feign interest so you can ask a question that could be easily be addressed via PM. It's a bit mean spirited to string along someone who's selling a dress just to prove a point.

Just sayin'.

Dani

You can't follow the rules if you're confused about them. That's all.

Aren't there sticky's that explain the rules all over DDN?

This is why it's important to read the sticky's, so mistakes like this don't happen.

I read them after my first post was deleted. I thought I had learned my lesson. It wasn't until the second one was that I thought, "That wasn't against the rules, was it?" Then when I saw that another poster's question was still there, I couldn't think of any explanation for why mine was breaking the rules.

i would like to know why it is ok to list a dress for sale, supply the email address and then never ever respond to the emails that have been sent inquiring about the dress--this has happened over and over again--if they cant respond, then they shouldnt be able to list the dress--lets be fair here! cmc

it must be said that it is not appreciated when others reply to threads just to gain information when they have no intention of purchasing. In my the short time with DDN i have come accross this quite regularly. This is very disappointing. Nobody objects to giving advice an helping in any way they can, but DM please be honest and if it is only help you require use the correct site i am sure there are lots of DM who are willing to help. :(
