i'm a gymnastics teacher at my studio - i know how frustrating these things are when you're first starting out. one key thing that a lot of people don't get is when you're upside-down in the bridge, push your SHOULDERS OVER YOUR WRISTS before and as you kickover.
i hope this helps - let me know if it doesn't and i'll try to give you more tips. it's hard when i can't see what you're doing.

June is in 2 days so you have a lot of work ahead of you.
Strech your shoulders several times a day, practise your bridges several times a day and hold the bridge. Until you get your shoulders over the top of your hands walkovers will be almost impossible but once you have the flexibility they will become easy.
BACK WALKOVERS
Most gymnasts learn back walkovers before front walkovers and find them easier. Because backwalkovers require flexibility more so than strength which is easier for young kids.
Practise bending back to your hands from standing, if it is too hard walk down a walll or try to bend back onto a mat. Once you have that put your good leg slightly in front of your other leg and bend back, keep moving it further and further out until you can do it standing on just 1 leg. To decide which is your good leg do a cartwheel. What ever leg you put down first is your good leg.
Once you have mastered the bend back you need to master the kickover. Start with your hands on the floor and your feet on a raised surface and kickover from there, work to lower and lower surfaces until you are on the floor. Once you have the kickover put the two together.
FRONT WALKOVER
Dancers often tend to master the front walkover before the back opposite to gymnasts. Start by practising kicking to handstand and then letting your feet drop into a bridge. The closer you can get your feet to drop to your hands the easier the skill will be.
Once you can do this you need tp learn to stand up from a bridge. Practice by walking up a wall with your hands. When you do it on the ground rock your weight back over your feet and then rock forward over your hands and use the momentum to stand up. Knee's firt, then hips, then shoulders and head last. Once you have this you can start doing it with your legs separated.
For both walkovers it can help to work them downhill at first to give you a little extra help standing up. |
