Hey, well I just joined colorguard in May for the 2007-2008 school year. Im really confused as to all the terms..etc. Well I guess my team won the WGI open class competiion last year and will be competing in world class this year. But I have no idea what that means at all!!! And I'm also a little bit confused as to what the differences between winterguard and colorguard are..besides that colorguard is with the marching band and winterguard isnt. I was also wondering how often other colorguards practice as a team? I looked at the practice schedule and it is a LOT!!

Congratulations on making the team, and a world class team at that! Yeah you have the basic difference btwn fall/winter guard. But to be a little more specific, the winter season is without the marching band. You have more movement, and compete indoors on gym floors. What high school are you at by the way? Yes, color guard takes up a lot of time, but is a lot of fun also. It is a lot of responsibility, but worth all of the practices. Good luck to you this year!

Well Congrats!!

Our colorguard only practices 2 days a week for 2 1/2 with the band. But if the captian see they need extra work they can call a mandatory practice at any time. Also one day a weel is usually set aside for peprally practice. But we have little practice time because our school principle has allowed the band director to make a class just for us. So we have our own little practice everyday in class.

Hope you have a great time and good luck.

Oh, I promise you...they're good if they won open at WGI. And moving up to world class is scary. You'll need to practice a lot but once you see what's happening locally and at regionals, you will be so glad that you've worked hard. It'll pay off...and by the time you're a senior, you'll be an old hand at this.

I don't know if your guard requires it, but some outside dance classes to sharpen your technique is a good idea if you can work it in. Movement is very important in judging winterguard.

You're going to have so much fun and make so many new friends. Be sure to tell us all about it.

I made color guard for next year as well. And I'm the only new person this year. The other 5 girls were in it last year.

Hey! I'm friends with one of you're instructors lol....anyways I was in a world class guard in hs and just expect a lot of practice time ecspecially in winter and in fall since you're from carmel. The marching band is pretty high ranked as well so I'm sure they have a lot of practices. Don't worry about moving up classes though bc since you've never been in any other class you wont really notice. It is tough being a freshman in a world class guard because they have high expectations but if you just work hard at it, it really isn't so bad. Congrats and Good Luck this year!

Congratulation!

What terms are you confused with?

You basically got it right on when you said Color Guard is with the band and Winter Guard is not. Winter Guard is more individualized and genrally a little more difficult seeing as how you are the only ones on the floor and you dont' have the weather elements to deal with. You can see clips of of winter guards on WGI.org.
