I am 22 and I am going to enter the ballet dance program in my school. I am also a beginner so this post did help. Someone mentioned about it taking long to get the combination and steps, which is a very good point to make. You may have some teachers (like i've had) that tell you "well this is going to be very hard for you if you cannot get this step, this is one of the simple ones" but i dont pay attention to those comments becomes it seems negative and discouraging. I know ballet is difficult especially for an adult beginner but i strongly believe that practice makes perfect and that is what i plan to do! PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE!

Great reminder here, especially about the cooldown phase.

At the age of 53 I am restarting. I spoke with the instructor this afternoon, she assured me I would not be the oldest in the class, and mentioned that it was like the proverbial bicycle; muscular memory does come back; expect some soreness, and challenge myself but not to the point of injury.

It will be good to be back, first class is Monday evening, I will let you all know how it went (probably on Tuesday evening!

this is really cool! I'm not really new to ballet/dance (second year...even though I'm starting grade six RAD tursday....scared!!!!) but this reminded me to always cool down, something i often forget to do. i always pay the price in soreness, yet i never learn...

Awesome guide. A lot of people are WAY intimidated to start ballet. This will help a lot!

Oh, and another one similar to this that I found is danceoutlook.blogspot.com . . .

It's not like amazing but pretty cool.

this is a geat sight--good for all the beginners-you have enterd a very special and magical world.
Beginning warmups should be gentle-don't hit a split right off (well not usually)- you can definitely pull and strain by stretching too much before the body warms up a bit and does its get ready thing.
A reverance warm down at the end is always great for the body and the soul. All teachers and performers appreciatte applause at the finish.
Enjoy !!! And don't be impatient with yourself.
