One technique I'd like to share is:
Put your hair into two ponytails. Wind them around each other, and pin them together. Use a hairnet to secure the bun. As for bangs, all you can do really is use lots of hair spray or gel.

What I'd like to know is how to get your hair into a ponytail and get the top, back, and sides tight and smooth. When I put my hair up into a bun, what takes up my time is getting it into a ponytail or ponytails. (Yes, really!) When I have my hair gathered and get the ponytail holder wound, then pull it snug, the top, sides, and back of my hair wind up poofed out.

That was an awesome thread!!!
I'm going to try these for my ballet class tomorrow.I usally do the Twisted Ponytail Technique, it works really well for my hair(straight and medium)but i use a little bit(tiny tiny tiny) of hairspay causes I have tons of stray hairs.

I think I have seen some people use that method, but i just twist it all around my head! But I use about a million bobby pins to secure it!!!! But I still see people around with their buns falling out after about 5 minutes...

I love the sock/donut idea! I saw my friend using one of the preshaped ones and I've been wishing for one ever since... I do mine a bit differently for class when I'm in a hurry. I start with a ponytail and twist it, then wrap it around itself (does that make sense???) and secure it with another hairtie. It doesn't sound like it would stay, but it works really well for me. This thread is so useful, I have curly/wavy/thick hair that likes to make corkscrews and interesting shapes.... Thanks so much! ~megan~

I think i have a different technique to you. I have really long, thick hair. So first i wet it, otherwise it is never ever neat. Then i put it in a pony tail and gell down the sides. Then i divide the pony tail into 2 equal parts and plait each part. Then i wind the two plaits around to form a bun. I pin, hair net, spray etc. It looks really nice!

^ My new technique is kind of similar (though slightly hard to explain).
I divide my hair into two sections, and make each section a ponytail behind each ear (securing them tightly with hairties). I then braid the two ponytails, and wrap them in a way that the two braids come out in an oval shape flat against my head. As I wrap the braids, I secure them as needed with large U-shaped hair pins. It actually looks really nice, and is very secure for turns and jumps.

mandi- I used to use haragami too, but for my really long hair it's just really frustrationg and doesn't work. When I do get it to finally work a little bit, the bun isn't secure enough to wear into ballet class.

Wow, this was really helpful!
If anyone knows how to do a nice bun for very soft medium length layered hair that would be sooo great.

Cool! :D

I tie my hair up in a high ponytail, then I braid it, twirl up, secure with hair net (no NOT a bun net!) and bobby pin it.

I've tried hairagami before, it's difficult to use. I bought bun ease, like the sox/doughnuts methods, bun ease is the brand, they have three size, for short, medium, and long hair, also they have many colour. If you interested, just email ksoparts@msn.com it's the email in their case.

In class we just have to have our hair of face and neck, but for performances most ballet dances need a high bun. I just out it in a ponytail wrap it around it's self and put a bun net over it and then bobby pin it in (I have the thickest hair)

thank-you so much!
this year will be my first ballet recital in a long time and I had no idea how I was ever going to get my thick hair into a bun!
I even bought one of those bun donut things! Hopefully, with these ideas I won't have to. Thanks!

The inside-out bun holds like a rock, but you need to have at least waist-length hair for it.
