I just learned how to do the sock bun here. it's great! i have super short hair ( barely too my chin, gets shorter as you go back to the nape of my neck) and the sock served as a hair net filler. I can't wait to show my friends at ballet what I learned! |

I've used the clip technique for class, as long as I remember! It's quick and easy, and when using a hairnet, it still looks clean.
Also, the first demo (very first, as in the first technique) is from my school! |

^^When I had bangs, I just brushed them back with my ponytail and clipped/hairsprayed them there so they just looked like they were part of the ponytail. If they're too short for that, clip them to the side or make a poof with them. |

I used the twisted ponytail method until I cut my hair. Now it's too short to put in a ponytail, let alone a bun, so I just ose a headband. It actually keeps my hair back really well. |

This sticky has been really useful... I think I'll try the last technique. Before, I used a giant clip to secure my ponytail in place, but whenever the class was doing an exercise where we had to lie down, it really hurt! Thanks again for the information. |

About buns with chopsticks, I think the chinese bun would be a good option. I you pull the hair thightly aound the chopstick, it's pretty safe=)

Seriously I don't know how you girls can deal with the hair thing, I know I couldn't handle it, so I am glad I am a guy.
Good post for the girls though |

To get hair nice and sleek against your scalp use hair mousse.
First I brush my hair to where I want my pony tail to sit. Then I hold my hair in place and cream the mouse around my head. Then use a brush to smooth the mousse into your hair, then brush the hair into the required pony spot again. This gets the hair really smooth against your scalp. It's similar to using water, only when it drys (the mousse) the hair doesn't go whispy but stays sleek.
Then I use a really thick elastic to secure my pony.
Then as my hair is medium length I tease the pony tail to make it all boofy, then I twist it gently and wrap around my elastic. Then I put on my hair net and then use about 12 U shaped pins to secure it all.
The end result is a sleek scalp with a lovely sized bun.
I also ocassionally do two pony's just behind my ears, braid them and then wrap across the back of my head. Secure with pins.
And of course hair spray after to secure any whispy bits. |

My ballet bun takes agessss!
I have pretty short layered hair, with a side fringe, so I clip that back, do a ponytail + then a doughnut for my bun.
I had to customize it though + cut some of the net stuff off as it was too big for my bun! :L
Messy buns work pretty well but I don't think they look very good for class!

The main trick when doing any sort of bun that requires wrapping braids/ponytails/coils around each other:
Keep it flat. By that I mean don't let one coil of your ponytail go beneath your previous one, or else the bun will get nobby and/or not-so-pretty looking. The goal is to keep the bun flat to your head instead of sticking out.
You do this by using lots and lots of pins as you're wrapping the ponytails/coils/braids. This also makes the bun more secure. But make sure the pins are the right size. Sometimes the small U-shaped pins aren't big enough and don't get the job done (I still use them often, though, and I have very long hair. I use the little pins for securing the bun as I begin wrapping the hair around the ponytail and the bigger pins closer to the end so they can reach the ponytail elastic)
Hopefully that made sense.

You know what I just bought and tried out for the first time? A Hairagami. That's right, a snap bracelet to make a bun with. =) You can et 'em real cheap-like at Discount Dance! It was really easy to use, too. No more pins for KaptainKlancy! |

I saw a bun (in center stage, the rehearsal scene where jodi walks out) that was kind of like the section coil technique and the rolling technique combined, like each of the section was rolled and then pinned so you could see some of the pieces but from far away it looked like the rolled technique. Could someone give me a better idea of how to do this/have you ever seen it in real life? I have very thin hair and it's hard to find a method that makes my bun look big and i think this might work!! |

at my studio
we do the first technique
but once it is up in a bun
we sew it in with fishing line.
you just take a thick needle and the fishing line and sort of weave it through and tie a knot at the end
it actually really helps, and you dont need as many bobby pins |

I LOVE the section coil technique!! Glad to hear I don't HAVE to twist the hair sections around because mine tends to have little hairs that poke out due to length I suppose but I fix that easily with more hair pins, a hair net and hairspray...maybe I won't need so much hairspray if I try to wrap in untwisted, can't wait to try! Great thread!!! |
