Hi,

I have a really quite voice and I find it really difficult to teach because nobody hears me. I try reaising my voice but I only end up yelling and my voice still doesn't carry far. Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions for this problem would be so much help.

thanks

you could invest in a wireless mic.

I can't afford a wireless mic/neither can my studio, but what I do when teaching is to ALWAYS get their attention via clapping or blowing my whistle first before speaking. Wait till the volume has lulled down, then speak - don't try and strain your voice over the top of it!

Also, never speak whilst music is playing.

Take some voice lessons.

Seriously, dancers often have a problem with proper projection because of the way you are trained to stand which is the opposite of good singing/speaking posture.

When you breathe in you need to breathe in from your diaphragm and rather than let your shoulders rise you should feel your diaphragm and back expand outwards, like a balloon.

There is a school of thought that if you shout your students will be noisy. If you stand perfectly still and wait for their attention, then speak softly they will listen

I also recommend a good drama class or drama coach. In the meantime, I will PM you additional tips ... too lengthy to post here.

I know how you feel. SOme days I have my soft voice days when no matter how much I try when I talk it sounds so low. And I try to be louder and it seems fake or like iM straining.

TRy carrying a whistle. And blow it before speaking. And turn off the music, thatll help grab attention.

Maybe make yourself a nice little sequin cane. Tap it really hard on the ground to grab attention of the others. Eventyually when they notice you going for your cane theyll know your about to speak. And plus, who wouldnt want a sequin cane! My cane is blk and pink sequins. But anyway, good luck!

I like the cane idea!

I try not to raise my voice, although I do have a loud voice. When I really want their attention, I actually talk softly and then they stop to hear what I am saying.

Lower your pitch and practice pushing air out from the diaphragm when speaking. Lower tones carry further than high-pitched voices.

Just to add to my previous post -

I guess you could say I'm a classically trained singer as of five years. And I still have a soft voice that gets strained (and by strained I mean laryngitis) if I try to project too often. So sometimes it's not a posture thing :)

netmum is right about the not shouting bit though.

I also have to agree that you don't have to have a loud voice to get your students' attention. I think if you are stern and follow through on what you will and will not tolerate you should be fine. I don't have a loud voice myself, but my students know I mean business. I think a lot of it is just practice. You could try a bunch of things like turning down the lights when you want them to be quiet, holding up your hand, turning on music...or sometimes if they aren't listening I won't bother waiting. I'll just keep on teaching and they have to quiet down or they will miss it. Just a few ideas for you.
