Hi,
I have four girls in a mini hip-hop class...I'm getting a little stuck on how to teach them hip-hop choreography and keep it clean. I've got some good, clean hip-hop music, but need some suggestions on moves to teach them that don't shake too much booty.
Any thoughts, suggestions, advice?
Thanks! 4 Replies to Mini Hip-Hop Choreography |

1. Walks in 4th position turned out - pretend to "pull up pants"
2. Bounce walks - step right and bounce knees 2x, keep arms at shoulder level with elbows up (parllel to the floor), reverse Left
3. Side Step - touch right ball to 2nd (no weight) and punch right hand across front then close feet together, reverse left. ie: touch and close alternating
4. "Flash trick" - squat to floor, jump both feet to back (apart in 2nd), jump onto right foot (left foot free), turn body to right to face corner #4 and kick left leg thru while putting both hands in back, cross left leg over right knee and kick up again, flip over left to face stage left onto both knees sitting.
5. Snake arms - isolate right fingers up, then wrist, then elbow, then raise right shoulder, raise left shoulder, left elbow, left wrist, then straighten left fingers
6. Box - place both arms front and tighten "freeze". Fold arms one on top of other, slide open until hands meet in a box postion with right fingers pointing down and left fingers pointing up (the palm of the right hand is on the back of the left and elbows out to side (AST lift right heel), dip right elbow and hand down and then return to position dropping head too, wave thru arms and drop heels right left.
I hope I explained the above enough for you to figure out!! |

This is a young age for Hip Hop, huh? I teach 5 and 6 year olds. I do a lot of things that involve them having to clap or stomp to the beat of the music.
I teach them the Coffee Grinder. They love this!!! We also do the Donkey Kick....you squat, then pop both of your legs out to either side (hands on the floor and arms straight) keeping legs straight. Almost like your going to do a hand stand, but don't go that far. Legs shoot straight from the hips. After that you slide one leg under, while bending your other leg and end sitting on your bottom with one leg straight and the one closest to the audience bent. Basically, your body should face away from the audience when you squat. You pop your legs out, slide one leg through and end up sitting facing the audience. Complicated to write down.:) Maybe you've seen it??
Those are fun tricks and although it may seem hard, they love to do it and they can!!!
At the end of the class we all get in a circle and do what I call a Dance Party or Slumber Party. One person gets in the middle and does a little free style to a fun song, while the others dance on the outside of the circle. Everyone gets a try and this is their treat at the end of class. It's fun!! |
