prozac/lovan and bulimia? en>fr fr>en

It was suggested to me that I try lovan or prozac in an attempt to help my recovery from bulimia.

I've been boucing in and out of differnt treatment centres for the past 18 months and physically (although I'm not underweight) my health is declining. Another one of my problems is depression and I also suffer anxiety - all of which is related to the ED.

I'm not sure about medications, but it seems that nothing else is working for me and I'm actually quite scared that I'm not going to beat this if I don't get an extra little shove.

What do you guys think about meds? I'm not asking for medical advice and I know it's the decision that *I* have to make, but I'd love some oppinions.

If that's what it takes, then what's holding you back? I'm sure I don't need to tell you that the earlier you can beat this illness the... well, less difficult it's going to be (I was going to say easier, but let's face it, it's never easy). Like you said, this is definitely a decision you have to make, but please don't rule out options.

On a side note, research done recently tested the effectiveness of antidepressants alone, therapy alone, and both combined on depression, and the group that received both meds and therapy improved the most. I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the study, or the authors, but it was in my intro psych text. Anyway, just saying, they've definitely been established as a viable means with which to fight depression.

Thanks - that's really good to know about the study...I'll have to try and find it.

I think people are just getting concerned because although I've only been in treatment for 18 months, I've had the illness 6 years.

I'm just not sure if it's the right thing to do! But I'm not sure if avoiding medications is the right thing to do too.

Has anyone else had experience with medications/eating disorders? if so, how did it go for you?

I was put on Prozac, because it supposedly helps the tendencies to purge. It worked initially, but as time went on I became even more destructive ON the medication than I was when I wasn't taking it. I've heard Prozac has helped many people, so obviously it just wasn't the med for me. Good luck!
