Thanks for all your input. I've tried to incorporate your suggestions.

As Booverly said, these are for measuring finished garments.

I find it very hard to get a bust or chest measurement on a finished garment. Should we measure seam to seam across the front or go all the way around, and do people measure the outside of the kilt waist measurement or the inside as it lays against the body? Thanks, I think this is a great idea, now if we can get people to use it.

Hi! I am a new dance mom so found this information helpful. I also found a great measurement guide on the mackilts.com site for providing the dancers measurements for jacket, kilt and hose.

Still wondering how to take a bust measuerment on a finished garment and the waist on a kilt. For bust is it seam to seam across the front or all the way around? Kilt waist is around the outside or open around the inside?? I find it hard to do these measurements on a finished garment, they are a bit different depending on which way you measure.

ScottieDog:

Generally, you would take the bust measurement with the vest or jacket flat and then multiply by 2 for approximate measurements. However, this would only apply if the vest or jacket was made for a dancer with an undeveloped bust. If your vest or jacket was made for a dancer with boobs, I would recommend that you take the front and back bust measurements separately and add them together. I would also label the measurements as approximate, tell how you got your numbers and give the ages of the dancer when they wore the garment.

example:
Bust approx 32" (measured on flat garment)
-dancer wore the jacket from age 12-14

For a kilt you could measure it by doing it up on the tightest setting and measure flat, then measure again with the kilt on the loosest setting. Multiply by two and you'd have the approx waist measurements. You could also identify how you did it.

example:
kilt waist: approx 27"-32" measured around the outside on flat kilt

There are different ways to measure the garments here and someone may do it differently than I've explained, but identifying how you arrived at the measurements when you post something for sale goes a long way to help people know whether or not the garment is something for them to consider.

As a kilt maker, I measure at the high waist (just below the ribs) and around the hips/buttocks where everything sticks out the most. I place a finger under the tape when measuring for ease. I find this is perfect for kilts.
Measuring around the upper chest/bust again with my finger under the tape for ease has always worked for vests and jackets. At most I have to adjust darts for a tighter looking fit.

These measurements are wonderful. Thanks for posting them. It helps us newbies.

I saw a chart on the Tartantown web site that details measurements by size 6, 8, 10, etc.

Thank you for your effort in putting the diagrams/instructions up for us! It will be valuable for me to use in estimating what will be a good buy or how to properly sell things when it's time. And the Tartantown link will be so helpful in sizing too!
