First of all how big is the trampoline? Unless you have a quite large trampoline you should not attempt to do a back handspring on it for two reasons. First of all it is dangerous as you are likely to come off the other end and hurt yourself and if this happens it will only make you more scared of the skill. Secondly it will teach you bad habits. The back handspring needs to travel back as a long skill, if you practise it on a trampoline that is too small you will do it too short which means you will never be able to progress with the skill until you undo all the bad habits you have taught yourself.
For it to be safe to do a back handspring on the trampoline it needs to be at least twice your body length. An olympic trampoline or one of the very large circular tramps are the safest.
Also never just try to throw the skill on your own. You could seriously injure yourself, even on a trampoline, you could even become a paraplegic or kill yourself. I am not saying this to try and scare you off doing the skill, I think it is a wonderful skill to learn and I regularly head out to my backyard to do back handsprings on my trampoline just for fun. I am just trying to emphasis the importance of learning to do it properly and safely. You will need someone to spot you at first. They need to be strong enough to be able to lift you through the skill if something goes wrong. It is ideal to get someone who already is quite skilled at back handsprings already.
The best way is to go to your local gym and ask about tumbling classes and/or trampoline classes. Even just an open gym class. |
