Pet Games Galore!

Feline Frenzy
Fill a paper bag with objects such as badminton birdies and ping pong balls. Place it in front of your cat and let her pounce on the bag. She'll go nuts trying to get into the bag! If you scratch the bag with your finger, it will make her go even crazier!

Catmobile
Create a mobile out of old cat toys. Tie cat toys with thick yarn to an old needlepoint hoop. Hang just at your cat's reach and watch her have a fun time. Your kitty will enjoy this toy for a long time. When kitty is through playing, remove the mobile and store it in a safe place.

Jump for joy

Dogs love to play games. Set up an obstacle course for your dog. Try rolling up towels for her to jump over. Make a cardboard box tunnel for her to crawl through. Your dog will have fun racing through the course.

Did you know?
Image hotlink - 'http://petshop.8m.net/Cat_-_Cartoon_05.jpg'
ailurophile (pronounced: eye-LUR-uh-file)

definition: cat lover

Where it comes from: The greek word ailouros means "cat". Phile comes from another greek work "philos" meaning lover or loving!

Can you read your pets mind?
You're at a riding stable getting ready for your lesson. With her ears up and her tail down, the horse whinnies when she sees you.

Image hotlink - 'http://www.sonic.net/~dsscha/bchc/images/FunnyHorse.gif'

You...
A. stand behind her and talk softly
B. lay one arm over her neck
C. back away slowly

Answer B. Your horse is happy to see you! :) To show her that you want to be pals, approach her slowly and put one arm over her neck. Never sneak up behind a horse. She may kick because she can't see you and feels threatened! When should you back away? You back away when her ears become flat!

Pet recipe - Easy Sweet Breath Bagels

Ingredients:
2 c all purpose flour
1/4 c wheat germ
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 c fresh minced parsley or dried parsley flakes
1/4 c fresh chopped peppermint or 2 Tbls peppermint extract
4 Tbls canola oil
3/4 c water

Directions:
1. Mix the dry ingredients in a medium bowl and set aside

2. Mix the water, oil, and peppermint in a small bowl and add to the dry ingredients
Mix well to form dough!

3. Place the dough onto a floured surface and roll to 1/4 in thick. Cut out shapes with a cookie cutter. Place 1 in apart on a lightly greased cookie sheet.

4. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes until lightly browned. Remove from cookie sheet to cool.

Store in fridge in a sealed container for up to 3 weeks or in a freezer for up to 3 months.
Makes 15-18 treats.
As with any treats, give in moderation to prevent weight gain (which contributes to other health problems with your pet).

Storm safety for your pets!

Image hotlink - 'http://www.sillychilly.com/image627.jpg'

Storm preparation: Many people don't realize how frightened dogs and cats are of thunder. Their hearing is more acute than ours, with a wider range of highs and lows, so they are often frightened by rumbles from a distance that we cannot hear. They don't know what is causing that noise, so they may panic. Even without flooding. pets are lost because dogs may break out of the garage or backyard, or cats may run many houses away to find a place to hide and many do not find their way back home. The best thing you can do for a cat is to confine them to an interior room where the noise is muted. For dogs, if you know in advance that a storm is coming you may need to talk to your vet about giving your dog a tranquilizer to take the edge off of their fear.

Flood preparation: With all the predictions about widespread flooding, there are several things you can do to prepare besides getting flood insurance. Make sure that you have enough pet carriers for all of your cats. If you have to leave your house suddenly, pets are much less likely to get away if confined to a carrier. If rescue personnel have to help you, your pets will be much safer when the noise and commotion hits. In addition, most shelters don't allow pets to roam free, so if you have them in a carrier, chances are they can remain with you.

Microchip ID's: Dogs and cats should be injected with a microchip ID. This is a permanent marker that can't be lost if your pet loses his collar. All shelters and pounds are equipped with the scanners, and they check all animals for a microchip before they are put down or adopted out. Your vet must do this injection, but the cost is minimal, and no side effects have ever been reported. Remember to stock up on emergency food supplies and water for your pets too. If you are isolated and can't reach a store for a while, they will need food and water too. Remember a manual can opener for those power outages!

Medications: If your pet is on special medication, be sure to keep it with you so it doesn't get left behind in case you are asked to evacuate. This is also a good time for a reminder to keep all vaccinations current on a yearly basis. Animals, which end up at the pound, are exposed to a wide range of viruses and unvaccinated animals. The stress of the whole ordeal can weaken their immune system an increase their chances of catching something. In addition they may come in contact with wild animals such as skunks or raccoons that could be carriers of rabies!

When you make an emergency evacuation plan for yourself, also make one for your pets as well. A little preparation can prevent a lot of heartache. We hope this has given you something to think about to ensure all of your family members are safe this winter!

Wow, the Fuzzy Forum keeps getting better and better :D! This was such a GREAT issue! I would definitely have rated it up because the tips and advice are really good, but I didn't want just one person to get karma because it's a group effort. I can't wait for the next issue!!!
