Hello - I contacted SOBHD last week with a laundry list of costuming questions, one being about pleated (not gathered) Aboyne Skirts. The answer I got was yes pleating is allowed as long as it is not kilt-like, and gathering or cartridge pleating is greatly encouraged. Apparently this is currently a hot-topic at the SOBHD!

thanks for that info. I may just tear abart my skirt now & do carthage pleating. (grumble, grumble, even though I don't like to do it, but it does lay better.)

Thanks booverly for the info on carriage pleating. I didn't know what that was. I do basically the same thing with a pleater foot on my sewing machine. It makes tiny tucks and sews them down. It really eliminates the bulk you would get with a gather.

I've just made a new Aboyne skirt and tried the cartridge pleating method. It's a little time consuming, but I'm very pleased with the results.

Here is the link to the web-site I used for instructions. This woman's instructions are a little less involved than the ones on the link previously posted.

Thank you so much for the link. I tried this but I found that the skirt was too long for the waistband and then I didn't get the fullness I needed so then I just gathered it by machine only I did at least four rows of gathering so it would be even.
