"Got a question for you who might be familiar with southern
Appalachian squares. The following description is for a figure
called "Little Girl Step Through". It is from a dance camp
handout that I believe is Glenn Bannerman's work, though I can't
be sure. It's late, I don't have dancers handy and I'm trying to
parse the thing out in a particularly feeble minded state. I'd
appreciate any help. First I'll give the camp handout
description. The figure is danced by two couples in a circle.

Circle left and back to the right. Drop hands. Men and opposite
ladies join right hands, ladies step through the circle passing
left shoulders, continue walking as men step through circle
passing left shoulders. All join hands and circle clockwise. Gent
swings the lady on his right, put her on his right and circle
left, then circle right. Repeat entire figure, ending up swinging
with original partner.

The following is my translation:

1 - Take your opposite's right hand. Pull by, ladies stepping through
circle passing left shoulders. Ladies continue walking cw around opposite
gent to home.
2 - Moving right along at the same time as the ladies, gents pass left
shoulders, crossing over to trade places and partners with each other
(Gents finish standing to the left of opposite lady).
3 - Circle left and right. Swing the right hand lady (opposites swing).
Finish the swing with that opposite lady once again on the right.
4 - Repeat all above, starting by taking original partner's right hand.
Swing is with original partner.

Does this seem anywhere near correct? You can followup here or
email me. Thanks in advance for any help.

I saw a question last week about notation for Appalachian clogging
steps, but didn't see an answer posted, so, here goes!

Ira Bernstein has published two books, both including step notation:

Bernstein, Ira B. _American clogging steps and notation_.
Malverne NY: 1984.

Bernstein, Ira B. _Appalachian cloggging and flatfooting steps_.
Malverne NY: 1992.

Ira's address is: Ira Bernstein, 85 Dogwood Avenue, Malverne NY
11565.

Another book that contains "footlature" is just out.

Seeger, Mike and Ruth Pershing. _Talking feet: buck, flatfoot
and tap: solo Southern dance of the Appalachian, Piedmont and
Blue Ridge Mountain Regions. Berkeley, Calif.: North Atlantic
Books, 1992.

I bought a copy of this book from Les Blank Films, San Pablo Avenue
in El Cerrito CA. The cost was $12.95 + $1.50 for UPS. California
residents add 8% sales tax. I have an exact address, but I left it
at home. If anyone wants it, send me a message, and I'll bring it
in.

After the previous post and my reference to clog dancing, I was watching Folk America at the Barbican: Hollerers, Stompers and Old-Time Ramblers, which features a bit of Appalachian clog dancing (about 8 minutes in), a reminder that this British tradition went to the States early (pre-1800) and became a key element in the Appalachian and Ozarks musical tradition.

12 Workplace Phrases You Probably Don't Know ... But Should
By Christine Lambden and Casey Conner, authors of "Everyday Practices of Extraordinary Consultants"

Getting along with people sometimes requires speaking their language, especially in the workplace. One of the ways employees try to emphasize their smartness is with specialized vocabulary.

Due to the nature of a lot of people's work, technical language and terminology is often necessary, but buzzwords can make you sound pretentious. On the other hand, if you are working on a team full of buzzword-addicted co-workers, you'll need to fit in. Learning and properly using the latest buzzwords and TLAs ( three-letter abbreviations) can help you create high-bandwidth communication with your colleagues.

Here are 12 of today's hottest workplace phrases:

Boil the ocean
Definition: The scope is too big to do in one project. Break it up into more than one. We often hear, "We're not trying to boil the ocean here. We just need to," when the client is trying to keep costs down and avoid an overly ambitious project scope.

Drink the Kool-Aid
Definition: To enthusiastically perform a task or follow a leader without knowing how this may affect you or to buy the "company line" without question. In business, you may hear someone say, "He drank the Kool-Aid," when he means, "He has been thoroughly trained in the program and we have his unconditional support," or "He is on board with our strategy." In political commentary, it is used to imply that people who disagree with you have been brainwashed or are under the influence of drugs.

Going native
Definition: This is what happens when a consultant stops acting like a consultant and starts thinking he is part of the client organization. If you aren't willing to go somewhere else, go ahead and apply for a permanent job. You aren't providing the same value you were in the beginning.
Greenfield instance
Definition: Clean, new installation of an application without customizations, configuration or data. When a brand-new application is installed, it is a "greenfield instance" until the consultants and programmers go in and start messing it up with configurations and code changes.

Holistic
Definition: A big-picture view or a solution that includes upstream and downstream impacts. Whatever it means, it's a great consulting word and we use it a lot.

Paradigm
Definition: The perspective or view you have of a situation. For example, "When ownership of our order fulfillment project moved from operations to sales, it caused a paradigm shift that resulted in a whole new project strategy and approach."

Running in parallel
Definition: Processing normal operating data through two systems simultaneously to compare performance and output. When a client is feeling particularly paranoid about a new system that his consultants have developed or implemented, even after exhaustive testing and training, we will sometimes recommend running the new system in parallel with the old for a short period.

Straw man
Definition: First draft of a solution or proposal intended to provoke discussion. It is an object, document, person or argument that temporarily stands in for and is intended to be "knocked down" by something more substantial.

Talking to the dog
Definition: Thinking it through by talking it through out loud. You'll often hear engineers and programmers say that they finally solved a problem by talking to the dog.

Use case
Definition: A particular circumstance or situation in which the solution would be used. For example, when designing a system, the engineer will refer to all the use cases that have been documented to determine if his solution would be effective in each situation.

White paper
Definition: An authoritative report or guide published to share technical or business information, particularly related to solving common problems. Writing white papers is a great way for consultants to get exposure in their industry and develop a reputation for expertise.

Wireframe
Definition: Simple pictures that show a proposed user interface, often used by business analysts to communicate expectations to users and developers.

Drivers' Education: The Six Things Every Driver Should Know How to Do
Get your hands dirty, avoid the cops and generally know what you're doing.

By John Pearley Huffman of Car and Driver

Click to enlarge pictureSafe Driver (© Verity Smith/Brand X/Jupiterimages)

A little common sense goes a long way.

The owner's manual of any car will tell you — in the most excruciatingly simplistic step-by-step manner possible — how to operate everything from the seatbelts to the trunk lock and how to finely tune the rear headrests with ferocious, compulsive precision. And on virtually every page there will be a yellow box screaming at you not to do something stupid like lick the brake discs or serve the radiator water as an after-dinner digestif. After all, based on the advice of their attorneys, manufacturers have to assume that anyone who buys their cars must be a total moron.

Although the average owner's manual overdoes it, that doesn't mean we can't all use an occasional refresher course in automotive common sense. And, don't take this wrong, but we know there are plenty of you out there who won't admit to the simple things you flat never learned.

So here is our unabashed (but slightly bashed) guide to the most elementary challenges of automotive operation. This is the stuff you didn't necessarily learn in drivers' education and your father just assumed you learned through transgenerational osmosis.

CHANGING TIRE:
It used to be that blowouts were a regular motoring event — right up there with thumping the occasional headlight-mesmerized raccoon and being forced to use a gnarly gas-station restroom. Thankfully, modern tires rarely shed a tread or spontaneously deteriorate. But guaranteed there will come a time when you'll be forced to change a tire.

If a tire blows, don't try to save it or its wheel by stopping immediately in a lousy situation; the shoulder of a busy freeway counts as a lousy situation. If possible, find a level, solid, well-lit surface and park, even if that means driving a mile at low speed with your hazard lights on. And for God's sake, don't stop in traffic. Ever. Then make sure the car can't roll. The parking brake should be on, and the transmission in park (in an automatic) or in gear (in a manual).

Grab the spare, lug wrench and jack. Most newer cars use scissors-type jacks that raise the car up at a predefined point on the car's structure. All the info on where the tools and jacking points are is in the owner's manual.

Now, lift the car using the jacking point nearest the disabled wheel so that the weight of the car is on the jack but the tire is still in contact with the road. If there's a hubcap, that will need to be removed so the lug nuts can be accessed.

With the tire still in contact with the road, the lug nuts should be cracked loose (counterclockwise) but not removed. The car can then be jacked up farther and the lugs removed. With the nuts off, the tire and wheel assembly can be removed.

Put the spare on, and hand-tighten the lug nuts (clockwise). The car can now be lowered so the tire is touching the ground, although the car's weight should remain on the jack. The lug nuts should then be tightened further using a star pattern (around the wheel, skipping every other lug) to ensure that they snug down evenly on the wheel.

Lower the car all the way onto the ground. Tighten the lug nuts down as snugly as possible. Hit the road.

Alternatively: Call the auto club.

How to Jump-Start a Car

Click to enlarge pictureJumper cables (© caranddriver.com)

How to jump-start a car

First, make sure it's the battery that's really the problem. If the car's lights come on brightly and the starter motor churns with its usual ferocity, the battery is likely heaving out plenty of amps.

Second, make sure you have a good set of jumper cables — robust, rubber-coated cables that can handle the amperage. Virtually all jumper cables should be color-coded with the red clamp intended for the positive pole on the battery and the black clamp for the negative.

Ideally, the car with the bum battery and the jump car should be parked on a clean, dry surface. And they should be parked so that the cars' batteries are accessible and close enough to each other that the cables can comfortably span the space between them without being taut.

With both cars off, attach one of the red clamps to the positive (+) terminal on the battery that's presumed bad. Be careful of the other red clamp — it's now live. Then connect that other red clamp to the positive terminal on the jump car's battery. After that, one black clamp goes to the negative (-) terminal on the good battery while the other black clamp should go to an unpainted steel surface on the stalled car, to be grounded.

Start the car with the good battery. Routing the cables this way uses the battery on the live car to start the disabled car, so there is no need to wait for the dead battery to charge. Start the dead car. Remove the cables in reverse order, close the respective hoods and operate the two cars as usual.

If the electrical system in the car with the drained battery is otherwise okay, the battery should be recharged after about 15 minutes of driving and the whole thing should be okey-dokey.

Alternatively: If the car with the dead battery has a manual transmission, there's always bump-starting the car, too. With the key turned on, the car in first gear, and the clutch pushed in, get the car rolling forward (by pushing it or by rolling down a conveniently located hill), and once up to jogging speed, quickly release the clutch. The car should jerk, and then start.

How to Check Your Tire Pressure
Everything any car does depends on the four rubber donuts on which it sits. Making sure those tires are properly inflated is the best way to guarantee your car performs at its best from a handling and fuel-efficiency standpoint.

There are fancy tire gauges and straightforward tire gauges, but they all work pretty much the same way. Simply take the gauge to each tire, remove the valve-stem cap (and put it in your pocket so you don't lose it on the ground), press the gauge flat against the valve stem, and the gauge will read the pressure. If you hear air hissing out of the valve alongside the gauge, you don't have a complete seal and will get an inaccurate reading. What that reading should be is usually listed on a sticker in one of the front doorjambs. Or it's in the owner's manual. The proper pressure is not the maximum listed on the tire itself; that's often far too high.

After that, it's a matter of adding air and rechecking the pressure until the tires are at their correct inflation. But be careful not to overinflate, because that leaves the car riding on smaller, less stable contact patches.

Remember, it's best to measure your tire pressure when the tires are cold — after the car has been parked for the night is ideal. Tires that are warm after running all day will have a higher pressure from the additional heat. Tire pressures should be checked at least once a month.

Alternatively: When tires shred, steel wheels make beautiful sparks against the pavement.

How to Check Your Oil
The oil in your car's engine is there to lubricate, not burn. So checking your oil is a way to determine if there's enough of the stuff aboard and if the engine has developed an appetite for it.

First, look in the owner's manual and determine where the oil dipstick is. In most cars it's alongside the engine block and marked with a brightly colored handle and an oil-can icon.

Take your car for a spin to warm the oil to normal operating temperature. Then park the car on a level surface and let it sit with the engine off for at least five or ten minutes. Open the hood, find the dipstick, and pull it out by the handle. The long shaft of metal that makes up the majority of the stick should be covered in engine oil. Wipe that off with a clean rag.

Reinsert the dipstick, and then pull it out again. At the bottom of the stick will be markings showing where the normal oil level should be. If there's oil on those markings, you're good. If it's below them, add a half a quart of oil at a time until you reach the appropriate level. If there's no oil on the stick at all, you have a problem.

Don't run your engine on a measly oil supply. Add the appropriate type of motor oil (that's in the owner's manual, too) as soon as possible to an engine that's low. Even if it's only been a few hundred miles since the oil sump was filled, you could have serious problems.

Alternatively: Throwing a bearing is destructive and dramatic.

***
How to Get Unstuck
You just drove into muck, and the car is stuck. What to do?

From snow: It's critical to keep a light foot on the gas, because too much throttle merely spins the tires, heating them up and melting the snow around them, which will refreeze into ice.

First, get out and see how bad you are stuck. If it is just your drive wheels that are blocked, the process will be much simpler. But if you tried to plow through a drift and the whole car is angled on a mound of snow, you're going to have to do some digging first to get the car back on solid ground.

If you can move at all, "rock" the vehicle back and forth by shifting between drive and reverse and going as far as you can in either direction. Be careful not to step on the gas before the gear engages, or you could do serious damage to the transmission. Sometimes it helps to clear a little space around your front tires by cranking the steering wheel back and forth. You can get a little extra traction by putting cardboard under the drive wheels, too. If there's no cardboard around and the situation is desperate, the car's floor mats might also work. If that fails, keep shoveling.

From mud or sand: Whatever you do, don't spin the tires. That will just dig a deeper hole. Instead, put something in the intended path of the drive wheels — palm fronds, branches, beach towels, wood blocks, your kid brother, anything — and proceed slowly.

Ideally, if you're wandering off-road, you should bring a mud ladder or sand ladder with you. Mud and sand ladders are basically small bridges made of steel, rope, or wood that can be placed before the drive wheels and driven across. Of course, anyone so well prepared as to have a sand or mud ladder along is also more likely to have a buddy with a winch nearby.

Alternatively: Abandon the vehicle in place and buy a new one.

Home Treatment
From Healthwise

Home treatment, such as lifestyle changes and nonprescription medicines, may be all that is needed to treat mild to moderate heartburn. However, if your symptoms do not get better with home treatment, or if your symptoms occur frequently and last longer than 2 weeks, see your doctor to find out whether other medical conditions may be causing your symptoms.

Keep a record of your heartburn symptoms before and after making lifestyle changes or using nonprescription medicines so you can discuss any improvement with your doctor. See an example of a heartburn symptom record(What is a PDF document?) .
Lifestyle changes to treat heartburn

You can make changes to your lifestyle to help relieve your symptoms of heartburn. Here are some things to try:

* Change your eating habits.
o It’s best to eat several small meals instead of two or three large meals.
o After you eat, wait 2 to 3 hours before you lie down. Late-night snacks aren't a good idea.
o Chocolate, mint, and alcohol can make heartburn worse. They relax the valve between the esophagus and the stomach.
o Spicy foods, foods that have a lot of acid (like tomatoes and oranges), and coffee can make heartburn symptoms worse in some people. If your symptoms are worse after you eat a certain food, you may want to stop eating that food to see if your symptoms get better.
* Do not smoke or chew tobacco.
* If you get heartburn at night, raise the head of your bed 6 in. (15 cm) to 8 in. (20 cm) by putting the frame on blocks or placing a foam wedge under the head of your mattress. (Adding extra pillows does not work.)
* Do not wear tight clothing around your middle. Lose weight if you need to. Losing just 5 to 10 pounds can help. For more information, see the topic Healthy Weight.

Medicines to treat heartburn
Note:

If you are pregnant and have heartburn symptoms, be sure to talk to your doctor before you take any heartburn medicines. Some medicines may not be safe to take while you are pregnant. For more information, see the topic Pregnancy-Related Problems.
Antacids

Many people take nonprescription antacids for mild or occasional heartburn. If you use antacids more than just once in a while, talk with your doctor.

* Antacids such as Tums, Mylanta, or Maalox neutralize some of the stomach acid for 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on whether the stomach is full or empty. Liquid or dissolving antacids usually work faster than tablet forms.
* Some antacids, such as Gaviscon, have a foaming agent (alginate) that acts as a barrier between stomach acid and the esophagus.
* Antacids such as Pepto-Bismol coat the esophagus and act as a barrier to reflux acid. Pepto-Bismol should not be used for more than 3 weeks and you should not take it if you can't take aspirin. It may make your tongue or stools black. The black color is usually not serious. Brushing your teeth and tongue after taking Pepto-Bismol may keep your tongue from turning black. If your child or teen gets chickenpox or flu, do not treat the symptoms with nonprescription medicines that contain bismuth subsalicylate (such as Pepto-Bismol and Kaopectate). If your child has taken this kind of medicine and he or she has changes in behavior with nausea and vomiting, call your doctor. These symptoms could be an early sign of Reye's syndrome, a rare but serious illness. Ask your doctor if your child younger than 12 should take these medicines.

Antacids work faster than acid reducers (H2 blockers), but their effect does not last more than 1 to 2 hours. H2 blockers can provide relief for up to 12 hours.

Antacids do have side effects. They may cause diarrhea or constipation. Also, antacids can interfere with how your body absorbs other medicines.

If you have any health risks, talk with your doctor before you start taking an antacid. If you have kidney disease, it is especially important to discuss antacid use with your doctor. Regular use of antacids that contain magnesium or aluminum can cause a dangerous buildup of magnesium or aluminum in people who have kidney disease.
Stomach acid reducers
H2 blockers

Acid reducers, also called histamine receptor (or H2) blockers, decrease the amount of acid that the stomach makes, which may reduce irritation to the stomach lining and decrease heartburn. Some examples of nonprescription acid reducers are Pepcid AC, Tagamet HB, Zantac 75, or Axid AR. Talk with your doctor if you take an H2 blocker for more than 2 weeks.
Proton pump inhibitors

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), such as omeprazole (for example, Prilosec), reduce stomach acid and effectively treat severe heartburn symptoms. These acid-reducing medicines are used when your heartburn has not gotten better with other home treatment measures, antacids, or H2 blockers. You may need to use a PPI for up to 5 days before you have relief of your heartburn but they are safe to use for long-term management. They also are safe to use if you have kidney or liver problems. PPIs are available without a prescription.

Acid reducers can sometimes change the way other medicines work. If you are taking prescription medicines, be sure to talk with your doctor before you take a nonprescription acid reducer.
Symptoms to Watch For During Home Treatment

Use the Check Your Symptoms section to evaluate your symptoms if any of the following occur during home treatment:

* Heartburn is not relieved by home treatment and medicine.
* Blood appears in your vomit.
* Blood appears in your stools or you have black, tarry stools.
* You have symptoms of mild heartburn for more than 2 weeks.
* Swallowing problems are not improving.
* You continue to lose weight for no reason.
* Your symptoms become more severe or frequent.

Mixing instructions:

Combine all of the ingredients in a shaker, fill with ice and shake until the shaker is well frosted. Strain into a tall glass and garnish with a slice of pineapple and cherry.
Creator/contributor's comments:

I've got this recipe from Raffles Hotel, Singapore, where it was originally invented. Singapore Sling was created at Raffles Hotel at the turn-of-the-century by Hainanese-Chinese bartender Mr Ngiam Tong Boon. Originally, the Singapore Sling was meant as a woman's drink, hence the attractive pink colour.

Creator/contributor's comments:

This version of Mai Tai was the most popular drink in the now closed resturant China Village. Though ingredients are there, the actual measurements of ingrediants are estimates due to the fact I was 10 at the time (no i did not tend the bar). Use chrodial grenadine thats alcoholic (12%).

Mixing instructions:

Mix first 6 ingredients in pitcher. Fill glasses with ice. Pour rum mixture over. Garnish with pineapple wedges, if desired.
Creator/contributor's comments:

This recipe was created by Mr. Kono, one of the original bartenders at Kona Village Resort in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. We saw the recipe in Bon Appetit, tried it, loved it, went to Hawaii to try one in person, have returned to Kona Village every year since!

"Brazil rallies to beat U.S. in Confed Cup final
Defending champs score 3 goals in second half against surprising Americans
The Associated Press
updated 6:36 p.m. ET, Sun., June 28, 2009

JOHANNESBURG - Brazil’s “Beautiful Game” came alive in the second half Sunday with three comeback goals in a 3-2 win over the United States in the Confederations Cup final.

Luis Fabiano scored two of the goals and Lucio added the third in the 84th minute to give Brazil its second straight Confederations Cup title and third overall.

But it was all looking good for the Americans, playing in the men’s final of a FIFA tournament for the first time, in the first half when Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan gave the team a 2-0 halftime lead.

“You realize why these guys are worth so much at times like this, but it’s still disappointing,” Donovan said. “We are in the position where we don’t want respect, we want to win.”

Brazil really did look like a beaten team in the first 45 minutes, creating little and being constantly stymied by the United States defense and goalkeeper Tim Howard. During that time, the American attack was stretching the nervous-looking Brazil defense, with Donovan working hard to give his team several scoring chances.

Although that quality play managed to give the Americans a hefty lead, Brazil was not about to let yet another title slip by.

“At halftime, we said there was something lacking, some lack of positioning,” Brazil coach Dunga said through a translator. “We corrected that and we pressured our opponent in the second half and we were able to score a goal.”

Luis Fabiano started the comeback in the 46th minute. The striker collected a pass from Ramires before turning and shooting past defender Jay DeMerit for his fourth goal of the tournament. He added a tournament-leading fifth to equalize in the 74th, heading in a rebound after Kaka’s cross was kicked against the crossbar by Robinho.

“We gave up the first goal so early in second half,” United States coach Bob Bradley said. “We really put ourselves in a tough spot.”

Lucio then delivered the decisive goal in the 84th, heading a corner from Elano past Howard.

“We made more use of the wings and we scored goals,” Dunga said.

Dempsey, who also scored in the 2-0 semifinal win over Spain, gave the Americans the lead in the 10th minute by redirecting a cross from Jonathan Spector. Donovan added the second by finishing off some nice passing play with Charlie Davies on a fast counterattack in the 27th.

Spector started the unthinkable after only 10 minutes, running down the right and sending a low cross into the area. Dempsey, who had plenty of room to maneuver, raised his right leg and put just enough of a touch on the ball to alter the direction and send it past a diving Julio Cesar.

Donovan then got possession at his own end shortly after Maicon had sent in a corner for Brazil from the right. The United States midfielder ran up the middle, passed to Davies and then reclaimed the ball from his teammate before beating Julio Cesar.

“They turned the ball over, Ricardo gave me a good pass in the middle,” Donovan said. “I gave it to Charlie and he did a good job getting it back to me. Just did the rest from there.”

The Americans appeared to get some luck in the 60th when Kaka headed a cross from Andre Santos to the near post. Howard stepped back into his goal and knocked the shot off the underside of the crossbar and then grabbed it safely in his arms.

Kaka appealed, arguing that the ball had crossed the line before Howard was able to get to it, and television replays appeared to show he was correct.

“I don’t know whether the ball crossed the goal line,” Kaka said. “Maybe the TV images will show. It would have been fantastic for me to score a legitimate headed goal.”

Brazil has won eight matches in a row, and is unbeaten in 16. The five-time world champions also won the Confederations Cup in 1997 and 2005.

And in 15 matches against the United States, the Brazilians have only lost once — a 1-0 result in the 1998 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The Americans reached the semifinals at the first World Cup in 1930, and made the quarterfinals in 2002. Besides that, its most famous victory before ending Spain’s record 15-match winning streak in the semifinals was a 1-0 win over England at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil.

“I think people around the world see that we have a good team, we have good players,” Bradley said. “Hopefully we can continue to step forward.”

In the third-place match, Spain fought back to beat host South Africa 3-2 after extra time in Rustenburg.

Coyotes are most active at night and can have a home range of 1,500 to 12,000 acres. This is just one more animal that relies on large amounts of connecting native lands to survive. Coyotes mate in pairs during late winter. Averages of six pups are born in each litter. The young are usually raised in pairs, but unpaired young may stay with the parents and help rear the next litter. Coyotes usually make their dens in hollow logs, brush piles, and burrows. If they choose a burrow, it is usually a burrow made by another animal such as an armadillo. Coyotes simply enlarge the burrows to fit their needs.

Coyotes are quite adaptable and eat a variety of things. They feed on rabbits, mice, deer, birds, insects, and carrion (dead or decaying flesh). However, coyotes are omnivorous. They have been known to eat persimmons, watermelons, wild plums, and blackberries. Thus, the coyotes eating habits cause problems for humans, farmers, and livestock owners. Coyotes also prey on domestic cats and dogs.

" * Ask any homeowner who has lost a cat or other small pet or had his pet food stolen every night....or can't sleep because the coyotes howling keeps him awake.

How to keep coyotes away from your backyard:

* keep pet food inside overnight, every night (coyotes will steal that food right off a porch in the dark)
* don't feed the stray cats (coyotes love to dine on cats, so if you don't feed the strays, the coyotes will look elsewhere for their fast food
* actively reduce your rodent population (take away the coyote food source)
* secure all garbage cans and their lids (again lock up this food source)
* remove fruit that has fallen off the tree (take their food before they get it)
* keep your grasses cut short (it removes a place for this timid animal to hide)
* fence the coyotes out (out of the garden, or yard, or elsewhere
* get a very large watch dog, turn on bright lights, or install motion activated loud sudden perhaps human sounds
* purchase an odor deterrent which are normally made from the urine of an animal that is a natural predator of the coyote

If the above suggestions don't work, then these techniques below may be in order.

* Poison: Many people use rat poison to get coyotes in one of two ways. Anticoagulant poison...the rats eat the poison and the coyotes eat the rates which transfers the poison to the coyote which kills the coyote. Or...you can use a different kind of poison on the rats, a type that bursts the rats stomach and it dies. However in this way, you are reducing the number of rats, and the coyotes leave the area because there is not enough food, you didn't harm the coyotes.
* Shooting: If it is legal and you can do it safely, dispatch the coyote. You may even be able to get a few dollars for the pelt.
* Live Trap the coyote: This is hard to do because they are very wary animals. If they smell even the slightest human odor on the trap, you won't catch the coyote. If you use a trap, place it over a hole with raw meat in the hole parially buried. When you catch the coyote, what do you do next. Relocation is not recommended by the authorities...euthanization is.

"It includes advice on how to avoid coyote attacks. Don’t feed them. Keep dogs on a leash. Don’t leave pets unattended (especially if they are smaller than the coyote).

But I have one problem with the advice given: “Residents are warned…not to yell or throw rocks at coyotes so they associate humans with bad things.”

Actually, the problems with coyotes is that they are associating people with good things– yummy cats and small dogs, pet food, and good hunting grounds for voles and mice.

Wild animals are better living with us if they do associate us with horrible things. A coyote or bear that fears people above all other things is not going to attack people.

Where I grew up coyotes are common, yet they’ve never attacked anyone. They’ve killed scores of free roaming cats and small dogs, but they avoid people and large dogs at all costs. Why?

Because where I grew up, hunting coyotes with packs of hounds is a common activity. A coyote that has been run by a back of foxhounds is going to be very unwilling to come near domestic dogs of that size for any reason.

Further, people do shoot them. At first, shooting coyotes started when people believed (and some still do believe) that coyotes are a mortal danger to people or that coyotes were going to kill all the deer. They soon discovered that coyotes are nearly impossible to call in and shoot. They are easily as challenging as a game species as wild turkeys are, and in my state, there is no limit on how many can be killed or any set hunting season for coyotes.

Despite what that article says, local animal control would be better off putting the fear of humans and domestic dogs into the local coyotes. And we do have a model for doing so.

In Alberta, British Columbia, and Montana, Karelian bear dogs (one of those laika/elkhound types from Finland) are being used to “haze” bears that come too close to human habitation. This hazing teaches the bears that associating humans with food will get them shot with rubber bullets and barked at by annoying black and white dogs that bark really loud.

I don’t see why a similar model couldn’t be applied to urban coyotes."

How to Build a Coyote Fence
Introduction
Coyotes used to live only in the wild, but they are adaptable to change and have persevered through changing habitat; now people who live in urban areas have just as good of a chance of seeing a coyote. Although coyotes can pose a threat and be destructive, instead of killing them, try building a coyote-proof fence to keep them out.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderate
Steps
1
Step One
Learn how coyotes get around fences. This will help you determine your fence's weaknesses. Coyotes can't jump over high fences, but they do climb them by using their front paws to climb to the top and kicking hard with their back legs to push themselves up and over the fence. They have also been known to dig and try to crawl under the fence.
2
Step Two
Know the options available for building a coyote-proof fence. You can build or modify a wire fence or a split rail or install a new electric fence. Coyote Rollers are also helpful for adding to existing fences.
3
Step Three
Use your existing wire fence as long as it's at least 5 feet high. Adding extenders facing outward along the top of the fence will prevent coyotes from climbing over. Wire fences need to be underground at least 8 inches to prevent them from digging under.
4
Step Four
Add a new electric fence. This is an option to adapt the current fence to accommodate electricity. Electrified fences do not need to be as high because the coyote will try and pass through the open spaces in the fence rather than jump it, and will very quickly realize the negative side effects of approaching the fence. You need to make sure Electrify the bottom of the fence to prevent them from digging underneath.
5
Step Five
Consider Coyote Rollers, which are added to the top of the fence. These rollers are based on how a coyote jumps over a fence--running, jumping, leaping or climbing to the top of while pushing off with his back feet. The rollers placed along the top of the fence prevent the coyote from getting a foothold and any attempt to get over, results in the coyote falling down.
6
Step Six
Determine if your current fence can be modified or if you will need to build another fence from scratch.

Ancient Hideout Discovered?

Israeli archaeologists were told that an underground cave was home to just wolves and hyenas, but when they dug deeper, they unearthed a secret world. Slide 2 holds the curious carving they found inside.

Ronaldo stands alone
His 15th Cup goal helps boost Brazil

By Frank Dell'Apa, Globe Staff | June 28, 2006

"DORTMUND, Germany -- One of sport's most enduring records fell early in Brazil's 3-0 win over Ghana in the World Cup yesterday. Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima rounded goalkeeper Richard Kingson to tap into an empty net in the fifth minute of the match for the 15th goal in his Cup career, one better than Gerd Mueller's mark.

Ronaldo's goal allowed Brazil to coast through to a quarterfinal date against France in Frankfurt Saturday. But the Brazilians failed to dominate against Ghana, which developed a reputation as ``the Brazil of Africa," and added to their advantage with two controversial goals.

Mueller set his record in the 1970 and '74 World Cups, his 14th goal providing the difference in a 2-1 win over The Netherlands in the Munich final 22 years ago. Ronaldo's scores provided Brazil with its fifth World Cup title in a 2-0 win over Germany four years ago, and he has three goals in this tournament.

``It is difficult, painful, and takes a lot of work," said Ronaldo, who tied the record after 17 World Cup games; Mueller played in 14. ``You have to sacrifice a lot. This was a result of my work and sweat. It is a great satisfaction to break this record, not forgetting that the first objective is still to get to the final.

``I got my confidence back practicing and working. Few believed in the program, but I followed it and will continue to do so. I want to keep scoring goals and winning titles. Whoever can handle the pressure can do it."

Ronaldo relies more on speed and technique than Mueller, but he has gained considerable weight in recent months and now has a stocky body similar to Mueller, defying the stereotype of the highly conditioned, high-tech athlete.

But the Brazilians have yet to be tested in this World Cup. Ghana matched the Brazilians in midfield and produced several good chances. But, though the Black Stars exposed Brazilian vulnerabilities, the fact Ghana fell behind so early, and its forwards lacked a finishing touch, allowed Brazil's players to pace themselves.

Though Ronaldo's goal was technically the winner, a sequence in the final minutes of the first half actually decided the result. First, Brazilian goalkeeper Dida toed away a John Mensah header in the 42d minute. Then, Adriano scored a controversial goal, appearing to have been in an offside position, in the 46th minute.

Kaka set up the first goal, sliding the ball through to Ronaldo, who beat the offside trap, took possession 30 yards from goal, then easily side-stepped Kingson to score into an empty.

Everything appeared easy for Brazil in the early going. Sulley Muntari was cautioned for a foul in the 11th minute. Two minutes later, Ze Roberto put Adriano in alone on Kingson, but Adriano had difficulty avoiding the goalkeeper, then went down, and was cautioned for diving by Slovak referee Lubos Michel.

Ghana began going forward, and the Brazilians were knocked off balance. Muntari was fouled, and the free kick fell to Haminu Draman, whose 40-yard shot was tipped over the bar by Dida in the 19th minute. Roberto Carlos led another Brazil breakaway but shot wide in the 26th minute.

Ghana had surged late in the first half, but Brazil rallied during injury time. Lucio brought the ball out of defense, laying off to Kaka in the center circle. Kaka advanced and found Cafu on the wing, with Adriano appearing to be in an offside position. But no flag was raised and Adriano continued at full speed, a step ahead of the Ghana defense, meeting Cafu's cross in the goal area for a two-goal lead in the 46th minute.

Stephen Appiah, Draman, and Muntari kept Ghana in contention in midfield. In the 69th minute, Appiah's through ball to Asamoah Gyan was saved by Dida. Plays like that kept the Westfalen Stadium crowd on the Black Stars' side.

But Brazil was able to regain control with the additions of Juninho Pernambucano in place of Adriano (61st minute) and Ricardinho for Kaka (83d).

Gyan, cautioned in the first minute of the second half, was ejected for diving in the penalty area in the 81st minute. Three minutes later, Ricardinho's through ball set up Ze Roberto, who touched the ball past Kingson for the third goal.

Ghana coach Ratomir Dujkovic was tossed at halftime for complaining to Michel. ``I told the referee that it would have been better for us if he put a yellow jersey [Brazil] on," Dujkovic said.

Clint Dempsey sobbed as the Americans walked up to get their second-place medals, unable to hide the pain and the disappointment any longer.

The euphoria of knocking off Spain last week dissolved Sunday in the Confederations Cup final when Brazil unleashed its "Beautiful Game."

After dominating the five-time World Cup champions in the first half, the Americans were powerless as Brazil scored three goals in the final 45 minutes to rally for a 3-2 win.

"We're at the point where we don't want respect, we want to win," said Landon Donovan, whose goal in the 27th minute gave the United States a 2-0 lead. "There's no guarantee we ever get back to a final game like this, so it's disappointing."

Luis Fabiano scored twice for Brazil, and Lucio added the third in the 84th minute to give Brazil its second straight Confederations Cup title and third overall. The American men fell short in their first final of a FIFA tournament, but the experience was invaluable.

Almost sure to qualify for next year's World Cup, also in South Africa, the Americans certainly saw the benefits of playing this game. What hurt was the way they lost it.

"We continue to try and move ourselves forward, and playing these kind of games only helps," U.S. coach Bob Bradley said. "But it still feels pretty lousy to let this one get away."

In the third-place match, Spain fought back to beat host South Africa 3-2 after extra time in Rustenburg.

The United States has beaten Brazil once in 15 games, and it was just 10 days ago that the Brazilians hung a 3-0 rout on the Americans in group play of the tournament that had the critics piling on and some calling for Bradley's job.

In the first 45 minutes Sunday, though, it was Brazil that looked like the beaten team. Its usually fluid offense created few opportunities and was constantly stymied by the U.S. defense and goalkeeper Tim Howard. Meanwhile, the Americans were relentless in their attack on a nervous-looking Brazil defense, with Donovan working hard to give his team several scoring chances.

Just 10 minutes into the game, Jonathan Spector sprinted down the right side and sent a low cross into the area. Dempsey, who had plenty of room to maneuver, raised his right leg and put just enough of a touch on the ball to alter the direction and send it past a diving Julio Cesar.

Dempsey, who also scored in the 2-0 shocker over top-ranked Spain in the semifinals, finished the tournament with three goals and was awarded the Bronze Ball.

Donovan then got possession at his own end shortly after Maicon had sent in a corner for Brazil from the right. The United States midfielder ran up the middle, passed to Charlie Davies and then reclaimed the ball from his teammate before beating Julio Cesar.

There is a reason Brazil has won so many titles over the years, though, and it wasn't about to let another slip away.

Luis Fabiano started the comeback in the 46th minute. The striker collected a pass from Ramires before turning and shooting past defender Jay DeMerit for his fourth goal of the tournament.

"We gave up the first goal so early in second half," Bradley said. "We really put ourselves in a tough spot."

Luis Fabiano added a tournament-leading fifth goal to equalize in the 74th, heading in a rebound after Kaka's cross was kicked against the crossbar by Robinho.

The Americans caught a break in the 60th when Kaka headed a cross from Andre Santos to the near post. Howard stepped back into his goal and knocked the shot off the underside of the crossbar and then grabbed it safely in his arms. Kaka appealed, arguing that the ball crossed the line before Howard was able to get to it, and television replays indicated he was correct.

It wouldn't matter, with Lucio delivering the decisive goal in the 84th when he headed a corner kick from Elano past Howard. Brazil has now won eight matches in a row, and is unbeaten in 16.

"You look around at their players, and you realize why they're worth so much and why they play at the teams that they play," Donovan said. "It's disappointing when we gave such a good effort today."

As the Brazilians gathered in a circle and jumped up and down in celebration, the Americans remained on the field, watching in stony silence. Many climbed up to get their medals with their heads bowed, and there were few smiles in sight.

"We were able to make it a real game with a top team," Bradley said. "Over time, to be able to sustain that longer, not have ups and downs throughout the game, that's a sign of progress."

partly the weather.. and maybe your diet and the weight on your legs?

I have pains in my knees but that's thru a LOT of walking.. and I'm getting older..

perhaps eat some supliments like cod liver oil.. or speak to your doctor if it's really sore..

it could be above you knee causing the pain though. but I'm not a doctor.

Might be because of the way you're sleeping.

Have you tried doing regular stretching? There is a good book called "Stretching" by "Bob Anderson"

Sore Knees Got You Down in the Dumps?

Do you ever have problems with a sore knee?

Did you know that you can substantially decrease the everyday soreness and pains that you have in your knees?

Sure there are many ways in which you can approach this problem, but we will discuss a way in which you can save money in treatment in the long term.

You may be amazed to discover that you can provide major relief on your sore knees without high cost medications! Honestly, all of this is very possible with the consistent use of a simple knee support. We will explain why they can help you…

Have you ever really stopped for a moment and thought about the pounding your knees take?

Every time you stand up, sit down or walk from one point to another you are calling your knees into action. Sure, you were already aware of this, but most people actually take their knees for granted. Let’s be real about that…

Your knees work over time when you go on runs, compete in sports, or carry out other out of ordinary extracurricular activities. Your knees endure a lot of physical activity on a day to day basis. So there is no surprise that millions of people around the world suffer and endure sore knee pain on a regular basis.

In addition to that, many people also suffer from sore knees due to injuries that they have sustained from sports or accidents. When a knee injury occurs there is generally a long recovery process which usually results in the patient still having some type of soreness or stiffness in the knees long-term.

What Can I Do To Help Ease The Pain Or Stop These Sore Knees Of Mine?

According to your specific condition there are a wide variety of treatments and steps that you can take to lower your soreness level, and to also prevent further soreness in the future. If your knee pain is not the result of a disease for which you have been diagnosed with, there are a few things that you can begin to do to assist in easing or stopping the soreness in your knees.

See A Doctor: Let’s be honest here; the best method of relief for sore knees may come from your doctor’s advice or suggestions. A trained physician will examine your knee and may take x-rays or an MRI to determine the cause of your soreness. They may prescribe medication, sports therapy or may simply tell you try out one of the two proven steps below…

Get Some Rest!: Sometimes the best thing to do is to give your knees a rest. This is no shocker, but let’s also face the problem with rest alone… Rest is nice, but do you have days and weeks to lay around and rest your knees?

Stretch them out and elevate them. Lay down without bending your knees and give them some relief. Your knees might need some more rest than they are getting currently when you are asleep. In fact, most people toss and turn in their sleep. If you are such a person then your knees are still moving around and working while you are sleeping. Simply take some time during waking hours to stretch your knees out and rest!

Strap On A Knee Brace: Knee braces have been proven to help promote healing of damaged or injured knees. Knee braces have also been proven to be a great prevention tool in avoiding future knee soreness issues. They are also very affordable and cost much less than a bunch of pain killers. In fact, most doctors will recommend the use of a knee brace the moment you complain about having sore knees. The support that they provide can really be an aid to you.

riiiiiiiiiight! :O Yuh!
Hmmmm, but HOW much of this is for real?

"Fitness for Aries

Your Ruling Planet: Aries is ruled by Mars, the planet of strength and aggression.

The Part Of The Body Your Sign Rules: Aries rules the head.

Your Metabolism: Very high.

Your Health Profile:

You are an enthusiastic bundle of high energy. You work hard, and play even harder. Temperance is not your middle name! You do everything with gusto: eating, playing squash, making love. You always "live in the moment" and have strong faith in your future.

Yet as an Aries, you lack patience. You look for quick results in all things, including exercise and diet. The human body doesn't always work on your timeline, so you may have to get used to nature's slower pace. Luckily, you won't likely have a problem with weight gain, since Aries is always on the go.

You excel at strenuous team sports and exercise regimens, because your ruling planet Mars "the warrior," imparts to you awesome strength, endurance, confidence and drive. Highly competitive, Aries can also outlast any opponent out of sheer determination. Highly goal-oriented, Aries wants to win and does!

Strenuous activity calms you down, so you feel wonderful after a good workout. Try vigorous sports such as martial arts, wind surfing, rollerblading, football, softball, basketball, gymnastics, boxing, jumping rope. Mars rules iron, so try weight lifting or fencing too.

Aries can overheat, so keep drinking water. In foods, Aries loves hot and spicy, so stock up on some delicious salsa to add zest to broiled chicken or fish.

You could experience headaches from tension. Important: since your teeth are in your head, the part of the body ruled by your sign, watch your teeth as a source of pain and see your dentist on a regular basis!

Your Biggest Asset:

Enthusiasm and the vitality of the Energizer bunny.

What Drives You Crazy: Not enough stimulation: "I'm bored!"

Health Risks: Doing too much and not knowing your limit."

"Aries: Action is Everything

Mars-ruled Aries, a cardinal sign, puts the emphasis on action, so if you are unable to do something about whatever is causing you stress, it will only make you even more crazy. Still, being a hot-head or acting rash is not in your ultimate interest, as I am sure your friends keep telling you. You are normally pretty good handling change and risk, but because you hate sweating the details, you could be missing something in your overall plan.

Aries is excellent at building strategy. So stop to plot all your options. If you need to prepare your attack (such as bringing a law suit if you feel you've been wronged, or asking your accountant to redo your taxes if you there is an error somewhere), outlining the steps you'll take or listing the pros and cons of a redress is in order. The sheer abundance of your Aries energy (combined with your high- octane adrenaline) can get in your way. Writing things down will force you to slow up and think before acting.

In the meantime, take out your aggressions in highly competitive games, such as one-on-one basketball, squash, handball, boxing, even target shooting at a rifle range. Solo, you can knock yourself out rock climbing, rollerblading, or hang gliding. Attending spectator sports will be less effective, but you could enjoy them. Going to a basketball, baseball or hockey game could be great if you can get completely into the action and holler your lungs out. Attending an air force show might provide an interesting change, as would attending an exciting rodeo (Aries likes displays of courage). A fire sign like yours needs to be consumed by an activity to become temporarily distracted, thus gaining perspective when you return to the day-to- day.

Aries rules the head, so if you find yourself getting headaches cut out Mars-ruled stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol, spices, bright lights, loud music or talk, ringing phones and other annoyances until you feel better. Putting a cool cotton squares on your eyes that have been drenched in a gentle tea would be soothing to you. Or get one of those blue gel masks in the drugstore that you put in the refrigerator to chill before you apply it to your weary eyes.

Other ways to get a grip on things would be to hop in the car for a good, long drive, as long as you don't drink or ignore speed limits (Aries is often tempted to speed--not a good idea--you would only compound your problems.) Many Aries find driving relaxing, but of course, not at rush hour. (As your mother would undoubtedly say, "Use your head!") Alternatively, you could choose to work on your car--tinkering with the motor, changing the oil--an activity that most Aries find comforting.

Aries is not a loner sign, so get out and socialize--you'll feel better, honestly. Just be sure to avoid any neurotics, cry babies, or shrinking violets close to you who keep repeating "What are we to do?" You must distance yourself from these nerdy Nellies and stick to positive types till you've bounced back from whatever rocked you. A club with that plays fast, energetic techno or salsa music is another sure-fire way to get out of your doldrums.

Finally, stress sometimes transforms Aries into hot, passionate lovers. If this describes you, by all means seduce your willing sweetheart!"

Hmmmm....??????
"Vacation Guide for Aries

Aries chooses vacation destinations that offer new thrills, and often go for physical adventures that test their mettle. Your ruler, Mars, is the warrior planet, and has blessed you with a zesty love of experience. Bored easily, you constantly seek a bigger, better challenge. For you, dear Aries, R&R involves activities that are nothing like your everyday routine.

As a fire sign, you prefer warm, dry heat to cold locales. Think about a vacation in the American Southwest, on the African mountains and plains or in the Australian outback.

Aries love the freedom of being behind the wheel, especially when there's a long stretch of open road ahead. Why not take off on a cross-country road trip? Visit the scenic wonders of national parks along the way. Stop in small towns to sample local cuisine and take part in country fairs. Try not to have to be anywhere at any given time‹just breathe the fresh air, kick back and let the road take you away!

A camping trip might be an ideal way to do just that AND test your skills in the wild. Energetic Aries might enjoy rock climbing, skydiving, hand gliding or white-water rafting. Or go to a dude ranch where you can ride horses and hike on spectacular trails. At night, join fellow guests around the campfire to share stories. You might even want to try a grown-up survival camp like Outward Bound.

If the great outdoors aren't for you or if you've done it all, spring for a completely different kind of rush‹casino gambling in Las Vegas, London or Monaco? Try your hand at a game of blackjack or slip a quarter in a slot machine‹you'll love the thrill of chance (especially when it brings victory). Aries are also always game for a scary roller coaster ride or a drop from the Tower of Terror, so a visit to a top amusement park like Disney World or Universal might be right up your alley.

Mars also instills in you a love of competition, so you'd also really enjoy a spectator sport destination, such as The Kentucky Derby, Grand Prix or U. S. Open. You could even start planning now to go to the next Olympic games with a group of friends, or to see Lance Armstrong win his fifth Tour de France bicycle race next summer.

Whether you travel alone or with your family, best friend or large group of pals, you are always happiest when you're at the helm. Luckily, most people will gladly hand over the planning to you. Just be sure to give everyone a say‹you will want to be known a benevolent ruler, not a dictator!"

"Fitness for Taurus

Your Ruling Planet: Taurus is ruled by Venus, the planet of beauty, luxury and comfort.

The Part Of The Body Your Sign Rules: Taurus rules the throat.

Your Metabolism: Low.

Your Health Profile:

As a Taurus, you are aware you use all of your senses to explore the world. How something feels, sounds, smells or tastes matters to you--a lot. You love sex, good food, the touch and feel of certain fabrics against your skin (not to mention skin against skin), and are very responsive to beautiful music. Yet you are also a creature of comfort and can become a couch potato as a result. A Taurus tends to be sedentary rather than athletic. An innate fondness for chocolate and French cuisine can pack the pounds on you, Bull, and inactivity combined with a high-speed modem at home or 77 cable channels on your TV can wreak havoc.

Work with your sensual nature, rather than against it, to keep a program of regular physical exercise a fun part of your life. Instead of your beloved old sweats, shell out for comfortable and flattering clothing to wear at the gym. Bring along your portable tape player and earphones so you can listen to your favorite music, and treat yourself occasionally to an after-workout sauna and message. Women Taurus seem to be especially responsive to aroma-therapy massage. When your muscles are aching as you pull into that last abdominal crunch, just remind yourself that exercise always makes your sex life more active and pleasurable.

If you find a sport you enjoy--make the most of it! Take your bicycle through a beautiful or unexplored area. When you swim, don't get locked into lapping around your gym pool forever. This summer, try taking a field trip to the old swimming hole you used to frequent as a kid. Maybe you and an intimate friend could sneak in a skinny dip! Taurus loves greenery and flowers, so working in your garden could give you the dual benefits of gorgeous tomatoes and firm calves and arms. The point is, if you can enjoy the experience you are more likely to stick to it.

Don't be radical with your eating habits, Taurus. If you allow yourself to feel deprived sooner or later The Bull will see red! The trick is to gradually make healthy changes in your diet so that you keep your enthusiasm--and your metabolism--high. Don't give up if you reach a plateau. Since you are ruled by Venus, a fairly hedonistic, pleasure-seeking planet, you will have the most success if you get regular rewards. So write down all the milestones that get you to your final goal and list a reward for yourself (a healthy one!) next to each milestone.

Finally, Venus will give you a memorable a memorable, melodic speaking voice (perhaps even an ability to sing), but you will be more subject to sore throats and laryngitis in winter as a result. Keep drinking your breakfast juice, and if you do get a sore throat, drink tea with honey and lemon or gargle with warm salty water for relief.

Your Biggest Asset:

A will of iron and plenty of persistence!

What Drives You Crazy:

Having to rush through anything. Sports that require lightening-fast reflexes and agility, such as squash, don't usually appeal to you. What you are more likely to enjoy are sports that require concentration and good hand-eye coordination, such as archery, marksmanship, and golf.

Health Risks:

Inertia keeps you glued to the past, even in sports and fitness. Your memory of being picked last in grade school could keep you out of shape permanently, if you allow it to. C'mon Taurus--if you try it I promise you'll like it!

"Continued from Dara Torres 2008: She Was Bulimic.

In qualifying for Beijing, Dara Torres set a new U.S. record in the 50-meter freestyle. The secret to her success? She has cut back on her swimming.

Dara Torres’ training and workout Torres, who will be competing in two relays (the 4×100 freestyle and the 4×100 medley) along with the 50 freestyle, concentrates on stretching, massage and weight lifting with a team of seven coaches and trainers. ‘At 41, recovery is the biggest word in my vocabulary,” she says.

The routine: Three times a week for two hours and before and after races, two trainers mash, flex and prod her 6-ft, 149-lb. frame like pizza dough. In the weight room, she uses a balance ball to exercise her core.

The results: “I’m 12 lbs. lighter than when I competed in the 2000 Olympics.”"

Had a complete spazz moment... Missy didn't come in when she was supposed to.

I scoured the house... no kitty.

I whistled the "come in" song, no answer.

I admit, I began to panic.

I looked and whistled in the house again.

No kitty.

Then, later, I was eating something....

I went out... did a "summons meow", and heard her respond.
She came trotting up to me.... and the relief I felt...
I was so happy to see her. I was so happy that she wasn't some damned coyote's supper.

She actually got up and put some space between us, so that she could digest her meal.

But, don't get me wrong. I was, and am, EXTREMELY happy that she is in, and safe.

We celebrated: her with dilute tunafish juice; me with chocolate.

Not a mark on her.

"Bret Michaels' Tour Bus Involved in 5-Car Pile-Up
USMagazine, July 6, 2009
Related: Bing, Bret Michaels

Bret Michaels' tour bus was involved in a five car pile-up in Toronto on the Fourth of July.

According to a statement released by his Web site, the singer and his band were traveling from a Poison concert in Toronto to St. Paul, Minn. when a car lost control and slid into the side of the bus.

The collision, which happened in Toronto, caused a five car pile-up on the highway. There was damage to all vehicles involved, but no serious injuries were reported.

Michaels and the band were released from the scene following an investigation, the statement says.

On Sunday, he performed at the "Taste of Minnesota" musical festival with his solo band. He'll rejoin the Poison tour tomorrow in Hartford, Conn.

Last month, Michaels broke his nose and busted his lip after injuring himself during the opening number of the Tony Awards. Michaels, who was performing "Nothin' But a Good Time" with Poison and the cast of Broadway's Rock of Ages, was knocked to the ground after a piece of scenery hit his face.

"I had a great time at the Tonys right up until I got blindsided," he said. "In hindsight, there is no doubt I got my bell rung. Unfortunately it has been posted and perhaps funny to watch, but I can assure you it has been painful to experience."

"Bret Michaels' Rep Blasts Tonys
USMagazine, June 11, 2009

A rep for Bret Michaels has released a fiery statement blasting producers of the 63rd annual Tony Awards for their lack of concern after the Rock of Love star, 46, was injured on the June 7 show.

Michaels broke his nose and busted his lip after he was hit by a sign descending from the ceiling as he left the stage following Poison's performance of "Nothin' But a Good Time" with the Rock of Ages cast.

"Sunday morning at rehearsals, Bret was never informed that the descending set piece existed, let alone would be moving into position as he was exiting the stage," Janna Elias, the singer's rep, said in the statement. "Although Bret was visibly dazed, he

remained extremely calm backstage as members of our road crew brought him a towel to wipe the blood from his face. His only comment at the time was 'What the hell just hit me?' The severity of this injury is not being taken lightly as symptoms from head and neck injuries at first may seem like nothing and sometimes do not present for days. At this time the full extent of his injuries remains to be seen until all x-rays are back."

"I find it surprising that a Tony spokesperson would brush off this incident with a comment stating 'Mr. Michaels missed his mark' with no mention of concern for his condition," Elias continued. "If everyone at the Tonys were aware that Bret missed his mark then they should have been aware enough to stop the set

piece from hitting him or at least slowed it down until he cleared the stage. I feel had this incident happened to Liza Minnelli, Dolly Parton or Elton John the Tonys would have at least issued a letter of concern."

See today's top celeb news pics

"Michaels was not on his stage but was at the mercy of the Tonys. He was performing on the Tonys stage and had the reasonable expectation that that safety of the artist was a priority and at no time did he do anything over the top or outlandish that would have put himself or others in a dangerous situation," Elias went on.

Elias also wondered why "with all the technology,

producers, directors, stage managers and crew ... no one at the Tonys saw Mr. Michaels clearly backing up and turning to exit the stage or was capable of halting the prop or slowing it so it didn't strike Bret?"

Bob Wallerstein, another rep for Michaels, also criticized show host Neil Patrick Harris for poking fun at the incident, telling the audience Michaels "gave head banging a whole new meaning."

Said Wallerstein: "We realize the show is live and must go on, however it is unfortunate that the show's host made light of the situation without having any

knowledge of the severity of Bret's injuries. Comments that Mr. Harris was doing shots backstage with Mr. Michaels and that Bret was completely fine were untrue considering Bret never saw Mr. Harris prior to, during or after the Tonys but in fact was being attended to by medical personnel backstage."

On Wednesday, Michaels canceled a show in Myrtle Beach, Fla., as "further tests are being conducted on his head and spine." He postponed the show until Aug. 6.

"How do they work?

In order to form a tornado, you need three very different types of air to come together in a particular way:

1. Near the ground, there's a layer of warm, humid air and strong south winds. In the upper atmosphere, you'll find colder air and strong west or southwest winds. The air near the surface is much less dense than the cold, dry air aloft. This condition is called instability. It means that if the warm, moist air can be given an initial push to move upwards, the air will keep on rising, sending moisture and energy to form a tornado's parent thunderstorm.
2. The second ingredient is a change in wind speed and direction with height, called wind shear. This is linked to the eventual development of rotation from which a tornado may form.
3. The last thing you need is a layer of hot, dry air between the upper and lower layers. This middle layer acts as a cap and allows the warm air underneath to get even warmer and make the atmosphere even less stable.

When a storm system high in the atmosphere moves east and begins to lift the layers, it begins to build severe thunderstorms that spawn tornadoes. As it lifts it removes the cap, setting the stage for explosive thunderstorms to develop as strong updrafts form. If the rising air encounters wind shear, it may cause the updraft to begin rotating, and a tornado is born."
