Loblolly Cove is an area popular with dive classes due to its shallow depths and abundance of shallow water creatures.

Directions: At the end of SR 128 in Cape Ann, turn Left on SR 127A (Cross Street). In one half mile, turn left (following SR 127A) onto Thatcher Road. After 2.8 miles, turn right onto South Street, and travel almost to the end (.4 miles), turning left on Penzance for another .8 miles at which point you will dead end.

Safest flea collars:

"Best Answer - Chosen by Asker
I work at a veterinary clinic. There are many options out there for flea prevention and treatment. One of the newest and safest monthly flea preventatives is called Comfortis. It's a once monthly pill that's chewable. So since it's a non-topical method, it won't be toxic to other animals. It also doesn't leave the animal's fur all greasy and chemical-smelling. Frontline and Advantage could theoretically be licked off by other pets or you can spread it when you pet your animal. The flea collars don't work well and are not worth your time or money. This is because the flea repellent just sits on the surface of the skin in one area. It would be great if all fleas hung out around the dog's neck, but they don't. So you need to either get a topical treatment that gets absorbed in the skin, or an oral medication that is ingested.

"One other important thing to think about (and then I'll stop lecturing) is that if they become indoor/outdoor cats, you're going to have to make double sure that vaccines are done on time every year and that they are on year round heartworm preventative (Heartguard) and flea/tick preventative (Frontline is the best and safest, flea collars are toxic and don't work).

Bottom line, having cats is a big responsibility. Having them go outdoors is an even bigger one. "

Big fat star sheds pounds like crazy
Supergiant star Betelgeuse may explain how this feat is achieved

As a large star nears the end of its life it begins to shed mass at a tremendous rate.

New observations of the supergiant star Betelgeuse may help scientists finally understand how this feat of weight loss is achieved.

Views from the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile reveal a vast plume of gas spewing off of Betelgeuse, the shoulder star in the Orion constellation. This behemoth star has about 20 times the mass of our sun, but is losing about one sun's worth of mass every 10,000 to 100,000 years.
That rate of slimming may not sound like a crash diet, but it is about a million times faster than the rate at which the sun loses mass.

"Mostly every star goes through such a phase at the end of its life," said astrophysicist Pierre Kervella of the Observatoire de Paris-Meudon in France. "We know the mass is going out, but we don't know how it is expelled from the star."

The observations of the plume imply that Betelgeuse is not shedding mass evenly in all directions. Perhaps the plume is created by the rotation of the star, which may drive mass toward the poles where it could overflow into a spray of particles.

Or maybe gas is expelled in bubbles by convection, the same process that circulates water in a heating pot. Scientists think convection could transport gas upward toward the star's surface, and that the momentum of this movement could cause some gas to be expelled when it reaches the surface.

There is some data to support both possibilities, and it's possible that they work in concert.

"There is a coincidence between the polar axis of the star and the direction of the plume," Kervella said, lending support to the rotation hypothesis. "But convection appears more probable currently, because there are some observations which show that there is gas motion on the surface of the star."

At this rate, Betelgeuse is speeding through its remaining mass and is set to die in a supernova explosion within the next 10,000 years.

"Maybe it will explode in a few thousand years, but it could also be next year," Kervella told SPACE.com. "We don't know exactly. It has probably lived 90 to 95
percent of its life."

The star has already exhausted its store of hydrogen by burning it up in nuclear fusion reactions, and has moved on to burning helium and heavier elements in a stage called the red giant phase. These reactions tend to produce more heat than occurs when burning hydrogen, with the effect of inflating the star to a much larger volume than when it was young.

Because Betelgeuse is expanding in size while losing mass, its density has become very low: the star is now about a billion times less dense than the air on Earth.

******!!!! My bank did what?! Take control of your money
Jonathan Dahl shares what you need to know to become a smart consumer

today.msnbc.msn.com . . .
TODAY books
updated 11:09 a.m. ET, Sat., June 6, 2009

Has your bank told you that when you access your account information online, it may not be accurate? Has your pharmacist told you that your private records aren't all that private? In his book "1,001 Things They Won't Tell You," SmartMoney's Jonathan Dahl outlines exactly what you don't know, but need to, in order to become a savvier and smarter consumer. An excerpt.

Your bank

* "We change our interest rates all the time"

Regardless of what your credit card agreement says, you can never be sure how much interest banks will charge you. For example, nearly all cards have a default rate — as high as 30% — which banks apply when you've done something wrong, usually after two late payments in 12 months. But some banks have cut that to one, says Curtis Arnold, founder of cardratings.com.

Banks can also change the terms of your agreement, raising rates when they like (though you can opt out and pay off the balance at the old rate as long as you never use the card again). Bank of America did that recently, upping many cardholders' rates from 10-12% or 27% or more, even though they'd done nothing wrong.

* "Your online account info isn't necessarily accurate"

Online banking has changed the way people handle their finances. They can pay bills online , transfer funds, track payments, and get a more detailed view of their bank account than ever before. Unfortunately, it may not always show the proper balance. With electronic transactions, ATMs, check cards, and direct deposits, banking has gotten more complicated.

ATMs and online bank statements will show deposits available before the money is actually in your account. Using your debit card at a gas station or to reserve a hotel room, for example, can put a hold on funds. Merchants may be slow to send in charges. And banks can sit on deposits- an out-of-state check may take up to five days to clear.

Add to that the constant reordering of debits and your account balance can quickly become a moving target-hard to track accurately day to day.

health.msn.com . . . Secret No-Sweat Exercises
The most productive exercises you're not doing.
Posted by David Zinczenko on Monday, August 3, 2009 11:08 PM

David ZinczenkoWalk into any gym and you’ll see plenty of bench-pressing, crunching, and curling. But you probably won’t see anyone doing these five exercises. Which is a shame, because they work your muscles in a way that shores up common weak spots—the ones most likely to suffer injury, and sidetrack your fitness goals. Stay on track with this countdown of the most productive—but most ignored—exercises on the planet. I guarantee that they’ll rev up your metabolism, melt fat, prevent injury and improve your health. Best of all, you can do them at home, with nothing more than a couple of dumbbells and your own body weight.

Want a workout to go? Download the Men’s Health Workouts iPhone app.

5. The Core Hold

Want to tighten your abs? Just resist the twist, with this exercise called the core hold. Unlike many ab exercises in which you twist your torso to the left or the right, the point of this move is to actually keep your body from rotating. So you hold your core still as you move a light weight around your body. This forces your to abs to constantly fight to keep you from falling over. The end-result: You work your core from every angle, without doing a single crunch. Do the exercise 3 times a week. Perform the move as directed for 30 seconds, then rest for 30 seconds, and repeat one to two more times.

For more great core exercises, check out The Best Ab Workout You’ve Never Done.

Image hotlink - 'http://media.social.msn.com/images/blogs/test/9_1797_20090803224826_core_hold_a_220.jpg'
Sit on the floor with your knees bent and your feet flat. Hold a light weight plate straight out from your chest.

Lean back so your torso is at a 45-degree angle to the floor.

Brace your core and rotate your arms to the left as far as you can, pause for two to three seconds, then reverse your movement and rotate your arms all the way back to the right as far as you can.

Image hotlink - 'http://media.social.msn.com/images/blogs/test/9_1797_20090803224937_core_hold_b_220.jpg'
(Your shoulders and belly-button should point straight ahead the entire time.) Continue to alternate back and forth.

If you’re battling waistline bulge, be sure to avoid any of the items on this slideshow of the 30 Worst Foods in America.

4. The Pushup and Row

Like any other pushup, this variation hits your chest, shoulders, and triceps. But the rowing portion of the exercise also targets your back muscles. So with every set, you work twice as much muscle--and as result, burn twice as many calories, for a leaner, fitter body. What’s more, the exercise works just about all the other muscles in your body, too. That’s because your abdominal, lower back, and hip muscles have to contract forcefully to keep your body stable each time you lift the dumbbell.

Too hard? Just try the rowing portion of the exercise, and work your way up to the pushup. Do 2 to 3 sets of 10 to 12 repetitions, resting 60 seconds between sets.

Want to see more variations of the pushup? Click here.

Image hotlink - 'http://media.social.msn.com/images/blogs/test/9_1797_20090803225343_push_row_a_220.jpg'
Place a pair of hex dumbbells at the spot where you position your hands for a pushup. Grasp the dumbbell handles and set yourself in pushup position.

Lower your body to the floor, pause, then push yourself back up.
Image hotlink - 'http://media.social.msn.com/images/blogs/test/9_1797_20090803225411_push_row_b_220.jpg'
Once you’re back in the starting position, row the dumbbell in your left hand to the side of your chest, by pulling it upward and bending your arm. Pause, then lower the dumbbell back down quickly, and repeat the same movement with your right arm. That’s one repetition. (Your torso shouldn’t rotate as you row.)

3. The Goblet Squat

Plenty of people are intimidated by the squat. But this version couldn’t be easier to learn how to do--especially since it only requires a single dumbbell. It’s named for the way you hold the dumbbell, like a giant goblet in front of your chest. This makes it safe and simple, yet still every bit as effective as the classic barbell squat. And once you master this move, you’ll be sold on it forever. That’s because the squat burns more calories per repetition than almost any other exercise. What’s more, besides melting the flab that covers your six-pack, Canadian researchers determined that squats work your core harder than many ab and lower-back exercises.

Image hotlink - 'http://media.social.msn.com/images/blogs/test/9_1797_20090803230028_goblet_squat_a_220.jpg'
A good place to start: Do two to three sets of 12 to 15 repetitions, twice a week.

Grab a dumbbell and hold it vertically in front of your chest, with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.

Keeping your back naturally arched, push your hips back, bend your knees, and lower your body until the tops of your thighs are at least parallel to the floor.

(Your torso should stay as upright as possible throughout the movement.) Pause, then push yourself back up to the starting position. That’s one repetition.
WATCH THE KNEES

2. The Dumbbell Shoulder Raise and Shrug

Sculpt shoulders worth showing with just a pair of light dumbbells.

This clever combination move targets your deltoids—the shoulder muscles that cap the tops of your arms and that leave you looking great in a sleeveless top. But it also works the muscles that help control the movement of your shoulder blades. That may sound clinical, but here’s why it matters: Strengthening these oft-neglected muscles can help improve poor posture and keep you from slouching—a benefit that makes you look even more fit.
Image hotlink - 'http://media.social.msn.com/images/blogs/test/9_1797_20090803230257_scap_shrug_a_220.jpg'
Try doing two to three sets of 10 to 12 repetitions twice a week.

Stand holding a pair of dumbbells with your feet shoulder-width apart. Let the dumbbells hang at arm’s length next to your sides, your palms facing each other and your elbows slightly bent. That’s the starting position.

Image hotlink - 'http://media.social.msn.com/images/blogs/test/9_1797_20090803230337_scap_shrug_b_220.jpg'
Without changing the bend in your elbows, raise your arms at a 30-degree angle to your body (so that they form a “Y”) until they’re at shoulder level.

Image hotlink - 'http://media.social.msn.com/images/blogs/test/9_1797_20090803230420_scap_shrug_c_220.jpg'
At the top of the movement, shrug your shoulders upward.

(Imagine that you’re trying to touch your shoulders to your ears without moving any other part of your body.) Pause, then slowly lower the weight back to the starting position.

1. The Dumbbell Swing

Who said exercise can’t be fun? You’ll have a blast doing this movement (really!), and you’ll burn a ton of calories at the same time. That’s because this exercise targets the muscles of your hips and thighs, including your glutes—which happen to be your body’s largest muscle group. After all, your muscles need energy to contract--so the more muscle you work, the more calories you burn. And as bonus, swinging the weight back and forth will get your heart and lungs pumping, too--for a terrific cardio workout.

Give it a try: Choose a challenging weight and do as many repetitions as you can in 30 seconds. Then rest for 30 seconds and repeat two more times.

Also be sure to sign up for the Exercise of the Week newsletter, for exercises just like this delivered straight to your inbox.
Image hotlink - 'http://media.social.msn.com/images/blogs/test/9_1797_20090803230541_dbell_swing_a_220.jpg'
Grab a dumbbell with an overhand grip and hold it in front of your waist at arm’s length. Set your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Keeping your lower back slightly arched, bend at your hips and knees and lower your torso until it forms a 45-degree angle to the floor. Now swing the dumbbell between your legs.

Image hotlink - 'http://media.social.msn.com/images/blogs/test/9_1797_20090803230626_dbell_swing_b_220.jpg' \
Keeping your arm straight, thrust your hips forward, straighten your knees, and swing the dumbbell up to chest level as you rise to standing position. Reverse the movement and swing the dumbbell back between your legs again. That’s one rep. Continue to swing the weight back and forth forcefully.

Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding (DUB)
"Overview

Dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB) is heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding that is not caused by an underlying anatomical abnormality, such as a fibroid, lesion, or tumor. DUB is the most common type of abnormal uterine bleeding.</p>

Advertising Disclaimer

Most cases of DUB are associated with anovulatory bleeding (menstruation that occurs without ovulation). Anovulatory bleeding is common in women who have just started menstruating and during the several years preceding menopause. When ovulation does not occur, the level of estrogen and progesterone in the uterus is disturbed, leading to DUB. Anovulation, however, does not always lead to DUB and there are other causes as well. Women with ovulatory cycles (cycles that involve ovulation) may also experience DUB.

Menstrual cycles vary in duration, frequency, and intensity, making abnormalities difficult to determine. Women who have DUB may experience a variety of patterns of bleeding. A woman who bleeds for longer than a week, bleeds more than every 3 weeks or so, bleeds between periods, or bleeds excessively should see a doctor or other health care provider.

DUB is usually painless. Diagnosis involves ruling out other causes of abnormal bleeding. Treatment depends on the intensity and timing of the bleeding, the patient's age, and if she is trying to conceive.

DUB and Anovulation

Anatomy of the endometrium
The endometrium is the mucous surface that lines the inside of the uterus. It is responsive to hormonal changes and contains several layers of cells that vary in appearance and number throughout the menstrual cycle. During the luteal phase (i.e., 2 weeks prior to menstruation), the endometrium is thick, its epithelial cells and glands are enlarged, and the arteries are swollen. At menstruation, the endometrium sheds. Following menstruation, the endometrium regenerates.

The normal menstrual cycle
Menstruation is triggered by a sudden decrease in progesterone and estrogen secretions. The menstrual flow is made up of endometrial cells and tissue, blood, and cervical and vaginal mucus and cells.

After menstruation, the increased secretion of estrogen causes cellular growth and the regeneration of the endometrium. This first half of the menstrual cycle is known as the follicular phase.

Ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary) normally occurs 2 weeks after the first day of the last menstrual cycle. After ovulation, the secretion of progesterone stops the growth of the endometrium, balancing out the effects of the estrogen. If conception does not occur, progesterone production declines, and menstrual bleeding begins again.

Anovulatory bleeding
Normally during the menstrual cycle, the production of progesterone in the latter 2 weeks of the cycle balances out the regenerative effects of estrogen, halting further endometrial growth. In anovulation, the level of estrogen does not decline, and progesterone is not secreted to balance out the effects of estrogen.

Advertising Disclaimer

Endometrial growth does not stop and the endometrial tissue accumulates and thickens, resulting in abnormally heavy bleeding. Also, without progesterone, the endometrium lacks structural support and sloughs off irregularly, causing heavy and/or irregular periods.

Anovulatory periods are common in the 2 or 3 years following menarche (first menstrual period) and during the several years preceding menopause. Up to 80% of menstrual cycles are anovulatory during the first year following menarche. As a woman approaches menopause, she may have 8 to 10 anovulatory periods a year.

Women who take oral contraceptives and those on estrogen replacement therapy may also have anovulatory cycles. Stress and illness can also trigger anovulation.

plus:

CAUSES:
Causes

Ovulatory DUB (not associated with anovulation) is less common than anovulatory DUB, and the bleeding, though abnormally heavy, is usually regular.

Advertising Disclaimer

Ovulatory DUB may be due to abnormalities in the 2-week luteal phase of menstruation that occurs just before bleeding begins. It can also result from an "atrophic endometrium" that can result from a high progesterone to estrogen ratio, which may occur in women who take progesterone-only contraceptives. A lack of cell-building estrogen causes the endometrium to slough off and bleed irregularly.

Patterns of abnormal uterine bleeding
DUB can result in the following menstrual patterns:

* polymenorrhea (frequent, regular periods that occur less than every 21 days)
* hypermenorrhea (excessively heavy bleeding during a normal-length period)
* menorrhagia (prolonged or excessive bleeding lasting longer than a week that occurs at regular intervals)
* metrorrhagia (periods that occur at irregular intervals, or frequent bleeding of various amounts,though not heavy)
* menometrorrhagia (frequent, excessive, and prolonged bleeding that occurs at irregular intervals)

Other types of abnormal uterine bleeding
Most abnormally heavy uterine bleeding has no underlying anatomical cause and is considered DUB. There are, however, underlying conditions that may cause similar symptoms. Diagnosing DUB involves ruling out other conditions, including the following:

Advertising Disclaimer

* uterine lesions (e.g., fibroids, polyps, cancer)
* damage from an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD)
* pelvic inflammatory disease (bacterial infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and other areas of the pelvis)
* adenomyosis (benign growth of the endometrium into the underlying muscular layer of the uterus)
* ectopic pregancy (pregnancy that occurs outside of the uterus)
* hydatid mole (abnormal mass in the uterus caused by a poorly developed or degenerating fertilized egg)
* uterine leiomyoma (benign, fibrous tumor that occurs in up to 40% of women by age 40)
* endometritis (inflammation of the endometrium caused by a bacterial infection)
* trauma and sexual abuse
* medications
* foreign bodies (e.g., tampon, condom)

TREATMENT:
Treatment

DUB is usually painless and is generally not a problem unless the woman is upset by the bleeding or is trying to conceive.

Hormone therapy typically involves oral contraceptives or progesterone therapy to regulate bleeding patterns. Treatment depends on the patient's age and the severity and timing of the bleeding.

Advertising Disclaimer

Removal of the endometrium
If hormone therapy is not effective, the endometrium may be removed. Endometrial ablation is usually the method of choice, although some patients choose a hysterectomy or D & C.

Endometrial ablation
Endometrial ablation is the removal or destruction of the entire endometrium as well as a superficial layer of the underlying smooth muscle (myometrium). The procedure may be done using a laser (e.g., Nd:YAG laser), a thermal balloon, a hysteroscope, or a resectoscope.

Endometrial ablation is about 80% successful in reducing heavy periods and may eliminate menstruation altogether. Advantages of the procedure over hysterectomy include:

* it is safer, less invasive, and does not require a surgical incision
* it is less expensive
* it requires a shorter hospital stay
* women can resume normal activity within days, compared to 4 to 6 weeks

Thermal balloon
The thermal balloon procedure involves inserting a balloon into the uterine cavity, filling the balloon with fluid, and heating the fluid to destroy endometrial tissue.

Hysteroscopy
A hysteroscope is a thin, telescopic instrument that is inserted through the cervix into the uterus. The instrument has a camera and a light attached so the inside of the uterus can be viewed on a screen. When an endoscope is used to view the inside of the uterus, the procedure is called a diagnostic hysteroscopy. An operative hysteroscopy involves using a hysteroscope with surgical instruments attached to cut and remove tissue.

Resectoscopy
Resectoscopy involves using hysteroscope with a wire loop attached. The wire carries an electric current to cut and coagulate (solidify) the endometrial tissue. This procedure is also known as electrocoagulation.

Advertising Disclaimer

Hysterectomy
Hysterectomy involves removing the uterus. Hysterectomies include subtotal hysterectomy (removal of the uterus, but not the cervix) and total hysterectomy (removal of the uterus and the cervix). The procedure can be performed through the vagina, through an incision in the abdomen, or laparoscopically (through a small incision in the abdomen). (More about hysterectomy)

D & C
D & C (dilation and curettage) involves dilating the cervix and inserting an instrument called a curette into the uterus through the vagina. The curette is used to scrape the uterine wall and collect tissue. The long-term benefits of this procedure are unclear, and it is often performed in conjunction with hysteroscopy.

© 1998-2009 Healthcommunities.com, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

DIAGNOSIS:
Diagnosis
Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical and pelvic examination, laboratory tests, and sometimes imaging tests. In women over age 35, a biopsy (removal of a small sample of tissue for microscopic examination) or a D & C (dilation and curretage) is performed to rule out endometrial hyperplasia or endometrial cancer.

Advertising Disclaimer

Medical history
The medical history involves gathering detailed information about the menstrual pattern. For most women, the interval between, the duration of, and the amount of menstrual flow stay relatively constant through the reproductive years. It may be helpful to keep a "menstrual diary" for several months preceding the office visit to monitor differences in the normal menstrual pattern.

Other helpful information includes a list of medications and nonprescription drugs, a sexual history (including pregnancy and contraception information), symptoms of infection and disease (including gynecologic disorders), recent surgery, and a history of injury to the area.

Weight loss, eating disorders, stress, and excessive exercise can cause anovulation, leading to DUB, so the medical history should involve these aspects of the woman's lifestyle.

Physical and pelvic examinations
The physical examination focuses on medical conditions that may cause DUB. The doctor examines the thyroid, breasts, liver, and skin for ecchymotic lesions (large, irregular, discolored areas of the skin) and hirsutism (excessive hair growth in unusual places). Obesity may also be a factor.

The pelvic examination involves evaluating the external and internal organs to identify the source and degree of bleeding, determine the size and shape of the uterus, and detect abnormalities.

Laboratory tests
Laboratory tests include a pregnancy test (for women who may be pregnant), a complete blood count, and Pap smear. Other tests may also be done, depending on the circumstances and the differential diagnosis.

Imaging tests
Some women require a pelvic or transvaginal ultrasound. Ultrasound produces an image of the endometrium that may make it easier to diagnose certain conditions, such as leiomyomas (benign, fibrous tumors that occur in 40% of women by age of 40 and may cause abnormal bleeding).

Diagnosis may involve a technique known as a sonohysterography, which involves injecting a saline solution into the uterine cavity while the transvaginal ultrasound is performed. Saline enhances the ultrasound pictures by acting as a contrast medium, making abnormal structures more visible, and opens up the uterus and separates the uterine walls, making the endometrium easier to see.

Advertising Disclaimer

Women over age 35
In women older than 35, the endometrial cells are examined under a microscope to rule out endometrial hyperplasia and cancer. This is usually done using endometrial biopsy, an outpatient procedure that involves inserting a narrow tube into the uterus through the vagina and suctioning out a small amount of tissue from several areas of the uterine wall. The procedure takes only minutes.

Endometrial biopsy is the most widely used and most effective diagnostic test for detecting precancerous and cancerous cells on the endometrium. A procedure known as a D & C (dilation and curettage) may be used in certain circumstances and involves dilating the cervix and inserting an instrument called a curette into the uterus through the vagina. The curette is used to scrape the uterine wall and collect tissue. It is an outpatient procedure that takes about an hour and requires anesthesia.

The tissue is sent to a laboratory, examined under a microscope, and evaluated for cancerous or precancerous abnormalities. Please go to endometrial cancer for more information.

If the biopsy or D & C reveals no abnormality, the patient is treated for DUB, usually with hormones.

Endometrial Ablation Risks
"Endometrial ablation is essentially the cauterization of the lining of the uterus and in clinical terms, is a relatively new procedure.

While the procedure requires a shorter recovery time and is certainly less of a trauma to the body than a hysterectomy, there are nevertheless some risks involved with the procedure. To that end, here are some examples of the known risks of endometrial ablation that you should be aware of before undergoing the procedure.

As with other types of surgical procedure, endometrial ablation surgery shares some of the same risks associated with other operations. Since the ablation process takes place often in an outpatient situation, there is the option of using anesthesia or an epidermal to make the patient comfortable during surgery. Some people have reactions to these methods of anesthetic after the surgery, including dry heaves and vomiting. This type of violent reaction can further inflame the walls of the uterus and slow the recovery process. Upset stomach and a mild headache may also ensue on a short-term basis, but should fade out in a couple of days.

Endometrial ablation is often performed when there is the presence of fibroid tumors in the uterus and removing these tumors may be all that is required. However, one of the endometrial ablation risks that a woman faces is the chance of sterility. While the procedure is not designed to inhibit the ability to have a child, there is some risk that the process of cauterizing may create that situation for some women.

Post surgical risks also include a temporary change in mood, some possible weight gain on a short term basis, and even some loss of hair for a short time, depending on what type of post-surgical medications are proscribed. At present, few women experience any long-term risks from undergoing an endometrial ablation.

Other than the possibility of sterility, most risk factors are temporary and can be dealt with effectively as and when they appear. However, the person who will know best what, if any, risks are potentially involved in your particular case would be your primary care physician.

If you think that you may be a candidate for this type of surgery, it is always a good idea to consult with your doctor for information about specific endometrial ablation risks that may come into play for you."

"Endometrial Ablation Procedure
Endometrial ablation is a procedure that is often carried out as an outpatient basis, which negates the need to spend a week or so in hospital as would be the case with a hysterectomy. However, it is still a serious operation that should be prepared for, in terms of the surgery itself and the post operation recovery time

If you are about to undergo endometrial ablation surgery, here are a few things you should bear in mind to help make the process of undergoing surgery and having a safe recovery much easier.

As with any medical procedure, it is important to follow your doctor's orders to the letter. While the list of things you need to observe in the way of food and drink are short, they are nevertheless important. Make sure you do not eat or drink after the period set by the doctor, and refrain from any beverages that the doctor does not want in your system during the operation.

Remember that even with outpatient procedures, patients are still given some sort of anesthetic whether general or local. In the case of endometrial ablation, you may have the choice of an epidermal or anesthesia. Either way, you will be in no fit state to drive yourself home after the operation is completed. Make plans for transport to take you home once the doctor releases you.

Bear in mind that you will not likely be able to return to work the next day. Generally, it is recommended that a woman who undergoes an endometrial ablation procedure takes at least four or five days to recover before resuming limited normal activity. Make plans with your work place or with the family so that you will not feel any pressure to return to your normal routine before you are ready.

Endometrial ablation is an invasive procedure and as such, carries the usual risks associated with surgery. Educate yourself about the possible side effects of the surgery that may include headaches, bleeding, discharge and stomach cramps. This will help you be prepared to deal with any side effects that do occur, as well as help you understand they are usually nothing to be concerned about and will pass in a short period of time."

"Endometrial Ablation Side Effects
Endometrial ablation is a viable alternative to undergoing a hysterectomy. However, as with any type of surgical procedure, there is the chance of some side effects developing once the procedure is completed.

One of the more common side effects of undergoing endometrial ablation is running a temperature. This is not unusual, even for patients that undergo an outpatient procedure such as this. Typically, the temperature will be a low-grade phenomenon that will pass in a couple of days.

Another example of endometrial ablation side effects is that there is the chance of stomach cramps and a sense of fatigue associated with the procedure. Generally, both of these conditions will last no longer than four to five days after the surgery is performed, with the pain and listlessness peaking around the third day.

These two symptoms are why many women choose to take a few days off to recover after the procedure, instead of jumping back into their normal routine. Combined with the vaginal discharge that is also common during the first few days after the operation, the side effects can be intense enough to make normal function extremely difficult.

While some women do experience severe side effects after undergoing an endometrial ablation, the fact is that many patients only experience mild reactions or even no reactions at all. Certainly, the procedure itself is much less of a strain on the body than a hysterectomy, and will require less recovery time.

While the procedure was only developed in the late 1990's, endometrial ablation has already demonstrated a high success rate, with very few serious issues coming to the fore.

All in all, endometrial ablation side effects are fewer in number and often much less severe than the after effects of other types of invasive feminine surgery."

What people have said about the procedure:
"Endometrial Ablation in the Real World

If you have already had the Endometrial Ablation procedure carried out, let everybody know how it went for you. Did it go as planned or did you have any after effects that you were not expecting. Do you feel better after having the procedure done or do you wish that you had never found out about it.

Maybe your doctor has offered you the procedure but you are not sure what to expect. There are numerous 'real world' comments here, both good and not so good that may help you reach a decision one way or the other.

I am scheduled to have the ablation procedure in two weeks...8/26/09 and have read more pros than cons about it. People saying they're having painful orgasms now or constant feelings of having to pee. I know it would probably be best for me...I guess just more nervous than anything. Any advice to prepare would be great...will keep you posted.

Yeah, it took care of the bleeding, but after just over a year, the pain and cramping that has started up, without bleeding, is enough to keep me off work for at least two days per month. I feel like my uterus and bladder are fused together. The pain is excruciating!! It hurts just to walk. There's no comfort zone, whether sitting, standing or laying down. I wish I had NEVER had the procedure!!!!!

I had the D&C, hysterscopy, and balloon ablation on3/27/09. I had heavy periods was put on birth control pills-which controlled the bleeding for 3 mths, then I bled on a friday and was anemic by next thursday. The first month I had spotting and discharging. Then finally, July I had a small spotting for 2 days and was done! So far it stays the same and regular. The side effects:PMS bad! Cramps, bloating, emotional-very bad! Feel like I'm going to blow and bleed from all of the PMS, but so far I haven't. I agree with everyone about how great it feels not to bleed like before. I got really sick from the bleeding. I'm curious now wondering how long the ablation will last. After reading all of the postings, everyone has a different time frame for how long it works. This website is awesome!

I've written in the past. I had my baloon ablation on May 18th 2009. I am fine since the other complications went away. Haven't had any bleeding since. I am having one side effect that is bothering me though. When I wash my hair I'm losing clumps of hair. My hair is thinning rapidly. I've always been known for having really thick beautiful hair and now I'm a bit worried. It's pretty thin. I'm only 35 I can't lose it like this. Has anyone else had this side effect?

I had a D&C and Ablation (balloon) 7/7/09. I cramped bad the first day, little cramping the 2nd day and was fine on the 3rd day. I am now 1 week away from my 4wk post op check up and am now experiencing the leaking (shedding of the linning). It's still early since the procedure but so far no problems. However I was not told about the No Sex thing until afterwards but I called Dr ofc and was told I had to wait at least 2 weeks. Thinking I will be given a clean bill of health when I go for check up next week and hoping this takes care of all the heavy bleeding and cramping.

I have endometrial ablation done in October 2006 after having two heavy periods, the last one lasting 16 days. The doctor said that my lining was extremely thick and would never slough off on its own. I have outpatient surgery with the procedure lasting about 30 minutes - hardly any discharge afterward. I even stopped at Walmart on the way home, although doc was upset with that when I told him because of the anesthesia. I spotted for a day or two maybe five times over the next two years. Then in August 2008 I went through a stressful, family crisis and had three regular, five day light periods over the next three months. In the last eight months I've spotted just a few times. I haven't had any cramping or pain at all. When I say spotting I mean it is there when I wipe and it's not even enough to come out on a panty liner. I would recommend the procedure to everyone instead of going through a hysterectomy. I came home with some meds for pain and was up on my feet the next day.

in reply to Kim I had my ablation done on April 29th and did not have anything more than spotting the first couple of months along with very slight cramps but this month when the spotting came so did horrible stomache distress for 4-5 days. I had bloating, cramps (some at times took my breath away). I'm glad the heavy bleeding for days is over but I wished I would have known how bad the stomache distress could be afterward. I hope it gets better over time and not worse.

Now a month later I began to get sick, at first I thought it was the flu but after a week I thought it was something else. To make a long story short I just found out I am pregant. I don't know what to do!!! Will I be able to carry the baby or will I have problems??

Vitamin E (as d-alpha-tocopherol acetate)

Vitamin E is an antioxidant. Can it prevent hot flashes? There were studies done in the late 1940's that suggest it may help relieve hot flashes and postmenopausal vaginal dryness and it has been popular for that purpose ever since.
Soy (Glycine max) (seed)

Soy contains natural plant estrogens called phytoestrogens. Although phytoestrogens are weaker than human estrogens they behave similarly in the human body. In the body, phytoestrogens help balance a woman's estrogen level by attaching themselves to the body's estrogen receptor sites. When attached, phytoestrogens can decrease estrogen levels in perimenopausal women and increase estrogen levels in postmenopausal women.
Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) (root)

The primary use of black cohosh extract is for alleviation of menopausal symptoms. It has been widely researched, especially in Europe, for its ability to alleviate the symptoms associated with menopause. While black cohosh is generally considered safe, people with liver disease or a family history of liver disease should consult their physician before taking black cohosh.
Damaiana (Turnerna diffusa) (leaf)

This yellow-flowering shrub typically grows in climates that are hot and humid, including Central and South America, and in the state of Texas. Damaiana has historically been used as an aphrodisiac and has been claimed to induce euphoria.

However, research shows that myth to be a hoax. It is indicated to relieve anxiety and induce relaxation. Those suffering from sexual difficulties resulting from stress or emotional troubles could benefit from supplementation with this herb.

As you can see, our Menozac formula is simple, but elegant. We urge you give Menozac a try. Let Menozac ease your way through the turmoil of menopause. Just two little tablets a day, and you'll be feeling like a new woman.

* Perspiration
* Vomiting
* Heaviness in the legs
* Weight gain
* Low blood pressure

Excessive doses of black cohosh may cause seizures, visual disturbances and slow or irregular heartbeat. There have been a number of cases of liver damage suspected to be associated with black cohosh use. In most of the cases, there were other medical problems present and other medications used that may have contributed to the liver damage. Also, the quality and purity of the black cohosh products used isn't known. Some black cohosh products, for instance, have been found to contain a Chinese cimicifuga (Cimicifuga foetida) instead of black cohosh."

(skinned knee) abrasion:
sportsmedicine.about.com . . .

". Be on the lookout for signs of infection. Pain in the knee, redness around the area, pus, fever, swelling, tenderness, and streaking from the wound up the leg are common signs that the knee is infected. If you notice any of these, seek medical attention immediately. An untreated infection in the knee is not good. The infection can spread systemically to any other place in the body, but locally it can cause an infection in the knee which is called a "septic joint" and is a medical emergency. Another big complication of an untreated infection is a bone infection called osteomylelitis—another emergency. Septic joints need to be drained in the operating room, and those kids end up on IV antibiotics for a while. For bone infections, you're looking at weeks of IV antibiotics—initially in the hospital, then at home. So, the bottom line is that this is a situation where a simple skin infection can become something very, very serious."

What is this medicine?

DOXYCYCLINE (dox i SYE kleen) is a tetracycline antibiotic. It kills certain bacteria or stops their growth. It is used to treat many kinds of infections, like dental, skin, respiratory, and urinary tract infections. It also treats acne, Lyme disease, malaria, and certain sexually transmitted infections.

This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
•liver disease
•long exposure to sunlight like working outdoors
•stomach problems like colitis
•an unusual or allergic reaction to doxycycline, tetracycline antibiotics, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
•pregnant or trying to get pregnant
•breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine?

Take this medicine by mouth with a full glass of water. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Take all of your medicine as directed even if you think you are better. Do not skip doses or stop your medicine early.

Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed. While this drug may be prescribed for children as young as 8 years old for selected conditions, precautions do apply.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.
NOTE: This medicine is only for you. Do not share this medicine with others.

What if I miss a dose?

Doxycycline is used to treat many different bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, periodontitis (gum disease), and others. Doxycycline is also used to treat blemishes, bumps, and acne-like lesions caused by rosacea. It will not treat facial redness caused by rosacea. Doxycycline may be used in combination with other medicines to treat certain amoeba infections.

Doxycycline may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Important information know about doxycycline

Do not use doxycycline if you are pregnant. It could cause harm to the unborn baby, including permanent discoloration of the teeth later in life. Doxycycline can make birth control pills less effective. Use a second method of birth control while you are taking doxycycline to keep from getting pregnant. Doxycycline passes into breast milk and may affect bone and tooth development in a nursing baby. Do not take this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to doxycycline, or to similar medicines such as demeclocycline (Declomycin), minocycline (Dynacin, Minocin, Solodyn, Vectrin), or tetracycline (Brodspec, Panmycin, Sumycin, Tetracap). Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease. You may not be able to take this medicine, or you may need a dose adjustment or special tests during treatment. Do not give doxycycline to a child younger than 8 years old. It can cause permanent yellowing or graying of the teeth, and it can affect a child's growth. Throw away any unused tablets or capsules when they expire or when there are no longer needed. Do not take any doxycycline after the expiration date printed on the bottle. Expired doxycycline can cause a dangerous syndrome resulting in damage to the kidneys.
Before taking doxycycline

Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease. You may not be able to take doxycycline, or you may need a dose adjustment or special tests during treatment.

If you are using doxycycline to treat gonorrhea, your doctor may test you to make sure you do not also have syphilis, another sexually transmitted disease.

Do not use doxycycline syrup (Vibramycin) without first talking to your doctor if you have asthma or are allergic to sulfites.

FDA pregnancy category D. This medication can cause harm to an unborn baby, including permanent discoloration of the teeth later in life. Do not use doxycycline without your doctor's consent if you are pregnant. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment. Doxycycline can make birth control pills less effective. Use a non-hormonal method of birth control (such as a condom, diaphragm, spermicide) to prevent pregnancy while you are taking this medication. Doxycycline passes into breast milk and may affect bone and tooth development in a nursing infant. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Children younger than 8 years old should not take doxycycline. This medication can cause permanent tooth discoloration and can also affect a child's growth.

How should I take doxycycline?

Take doxycycline exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

Take doxycycline with a full glass of water (8 ounces).

Do not take the medication with milk or other dairy products, unless your doctor has told you to. Dairy products can make it harder for your body to absorb the medicine. Certain brands of doxycycline may not have restrictions about taking them with dairy products. If your doctor has instructed you to take doxycycline with milk, tell your pharmacist that you need a brand of doxycycline that can be taken with milk.

Do not crush, break, or open a delayed-release capsule (Orecea). Swallow the pill whole. It is specially made to release medicine slowly in the body. Breaking or opening the pill would cause too much of the drug to be released at one time. Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. To be sure you get the correct dose, measure the liquid with a marked measuring spoon or medicine cup, not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.

Take doxycycline for the entire length of time prescribed by your doctor. Your symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated. Doxycycline will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu. Do not give this medicine to another person, even if they have the same condition you have.

If you need to have any type of surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are taking doxycycline. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time.

Throw away any unused doxycycline when it expires or when it is no longer needed. Do not take any doxycycline after the expiration date printed on the label. Using expired doxycycline can cause damage to your kidneys. Store this medication at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. Overdose symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
What should I avoid while taking doxycycline?

Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or has blood in it, call your doctor. Do not use any medicine to stop the diarrhea unless your doctor has told you to.

Avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial UV rays (sunlamps or tanning beds). Doxycycline can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and sunburn may result. Use a sunscreen (minimum SPF 15) and wear protective clothing if you must be out in the sun. Do not take iron supplements, multivitamins, calcium supplements, antacids, or laxatives within 2 hours before or after taking doxycycline.
Doxycycline side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using doxycycline and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

*

severe headache, dizziness, blurred vision;
*

fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms;
*

severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash;
*

urinating less than usual or not at all;

*

severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, nausea and vomiting, fast heart rate;

*

*

white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips;
*

*

vaginal itching or discharge.
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
What other drugs will affect doxycycline?

Before taking doxycycline, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs:

*

cholesterol-lowering medications such as cholestyramine (Prevalite, Questran) or colestipol (Colestid);
*

isotretinoin (Accutane);
*

tretinoin (Renova, Retin-A, Vesanoid);
*

an antacid such as Tums, Rolaids, Milk of Magnesia, Maalox, and others;
*

a product that contains bismuth subsalicylate such as Pepto-Bismol;
*

minerals such as iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, and over-the-counter vitamin and mineral supplements;
*

a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin); or
*

a penicillin antibiotic such as amoxicillin (Amoxil, Trimox, others), penicillin (BeePen-VK, Pen-Vee K, Veetids, others), dicloxacillin (Dynapen), carbenicillin (Geocillin), oxacillin (Bactocill), and others.

This list is not complete and there may be other drugs that can interact with doxycycline. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.
Where can I get more information?

* Your pharmacist can provide more information about doxycycline.

A szép nevű Euclid városban született, saját nevét pedig lengyel származású apjától kapta. The beautiful city has been named Euclid, his name is Polish-born father was. Az idézet szerint meglehetősen gyakorlati szempontok indították el a köztisztviselőként dolgozó Zelaznyt a sci-fi irányába… Élete során végül több mint 50 könyvet és 150 novellát írt. The quotation is quite practical considerations that led to the civil servant working in the sci-fi Zelaznyt towards the end of his life ... more than 50 books and 150 short stories he wrote. A New Wave jeles képviselőjének tartott író alkotóéveinek csúcsa a 60-70 évekre esik. The New Wave was the representative of the illustrious writer alkotóéveinek peak of the 60-70 year range. Írásaira jellemző a pszichológiailag jól kidolgozott karakterek szerepeltetése és az átgondolt cselekmény felépítése. Writings are characterized by inclusion and psychological well-developed characters, well thought-out plot structure. Történeteivel gyakran átlépi az általa ködösen értelmezett határt a SF és a fantazy között. Stories are often vague sense that it crosses the boundary between SF and the fantazy. Néhány legjobb regénye különféle mitológiák feldolgozásán alapul, így a Lord of Light (hinduizmus), a Creatures of Light and Darkness (egyiptomi istenségek), az Eye of the Cat (navaho mitológia és folklór) és egyéb más – görög, norvég, japán – mitológiák. Some of the best novel based on the processing of various mythologies, including the Lord of Light (Hinduism), the Creatures of Light and Darkness (Egyptian gods), the Eye of the Cat (Navajo mythology and folklore) and the other - in Greek, Norwegian, Japanese - mythology . Munkásságának kiemelkedő részét alkotja még a tízkötetes Amber regényfolyam is. Prominent part of his work even tízkötetes Amber regényfolyam well. Összesen hat Hugo- és három Nebula-díj jelöli Zelazny írói útját. Nagyon úgy tűnik, a prózai gyakorlatiasság ellenére jó választásnak bizonyult, amikor líra helyett idegen világok, mitikus múlt és jövőbeni történetek költése mellett döntött. A total of six Hugo and Nebula Award three designated Zelazny writer's path. It seems, in spite of the prosaic pragmatism has proved a good choice when lira instead of alien worlds, mythical stories of past and future spending decided.
