What is the purpose of the "cushoning" please

Placing some sort of cushoning under knees, feet, ankles and so on during training? I can assume that it is for some safety/health reason. But an explaination would be wonderful. Thank you much.

mostly its just for comfort because in RG you do a lot of elements on your knees, and if you dont have pads you will get really bad rug burns and it realllly hurts

Putting them under yourself allows you to focus on the stretch and not the pain of being unsupported and sometimes is used for elevation. xx
