I made a post quite a while ago . When my mother had cancer, i did my dance and it went amazingly. However it was the last time she saw me dance. I now want to dedicate a dance to her because she passed away November 3rd and lost the battle against cancer. If you have any suggestions it would be very helpful. Id like a very emotional song , a tear jerker if you will. Thanks alot

Aw I'm really sorry to hear about your mom.

I'd suggest:
Butterfly Kisses- There are many version by different people, and any one of them would be amazing

This Is Your Time- Michael W. Smith

Starts With Goodbye- Carrie Underwood

Hope I've helped! Good luck!

Well, Butterfly Kisses does say "daddy" in it a lot, so I'm not sure if that would work...I'm sure it's possible to cut those lines out if you still wanted to use it though.

What about the Boys Two Men song 'Mamma' - too be honest I'm not sure if that's the correct title of the song. I'm also not sure if this is the kind of song you are after?

Hey, here's some more that I've found in my music:

*Angel- Sarah McLachlan
*Fallen- Sarah McLachlan
*Dreaming With A Broken Heart- John Mayer (Not by a girl, but could be very emotional)
*Wild Horses- Natasha Bedingfield
*Sound The Bugle- Bryan Adams (Again, not by a girl, but extremely emotional, it's from the movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron if you're not familiar with it. I love this one.)
*How Does It Feel- Avril Lavigne

well i was thinking of doing angel .. but that was played at her funeral. and whenever i hear that song i bawl. and im afraid my makep will go everywhere and that ill fall apart on stage. still .. a very good suggestion.. i like new songs that most people have never heard of though. like not mainstream.. unique.

Yeah, that probably wouldn't be a good idea to use that song, but it is indeed very beautiful.

I definitely understand what you mean about not wanting anything mainstream, whenever people watch someone dance to something they've danced to, they can generally only visualize their own dance, instead of the other person.

Here are some other good ones, again, not many by girls, but still worth looking into.

*Angel- Kennedy (they're a christian rock band, I'm not sure how easy it would be to find their songs though...)
*Wish- Kennedy
*Two Days Left- Two Empty Chairs (This song is more uplifting than emotional, but I think it could still work...my cousin is the lead guitarist in this band...they can be found on iTunes)
*Between the Lines- Sara Bareilles
*Long Trip Alone- Dierks Bentley (pretty mainstream, but it was played at my uncle's funeral...very emotional)

I'll keep looking around!

i'm so sorry to hear about your mom. i have the PERFECT song!

hurt by christina aguilera (sp)

here are the lyrics

Seems like it was yesterday when I saw your face
You told me how proud you were but I walked away
If only I knew what I know today

I would hold you in my arms
I would take the pain away
Thank you for all you've done
Forgive all your mistakes
There's nothing I wouldn't do
To hear your voice again
Sometimes I want to call you but I know you won't be there

I'm sorry for blaming you for everything I just couldn't do
And I've hurt myself by hurting you
Some days I feel broke inside but I won't admit
Sometimes I just want to hide 'cause it's you I miss
You know it's so hard to say goodbye when it comes to this

Would you tell me I was wrong?
Would you help me understand?
Are you looking down upon me?
Are you proud of who I am?
There's nothing I wouldn't do
To have just one more chance
To look into your eyes and see you looking back

I'm sorry for blaming you for everything I just couldn't do
And I've hurt myself
If I had just one more day, I would tell you how much that
I've missed you since you've been away

Oh, it's dangerous
It's so out of line to try to turn back time

I'm sorry for blaming you for everything I just couldn't do
And I've hurt myself

By hurting you

I'm sorry to hear about your mother. you need the perfect song...
I have 2 that might be good to check out.
"the promise" tracy chapman
(talks about "if you wait for me, if you miss me once in a while... I'll return to you, I'll always have that place for you in my heart")
"mama" beth hart
("I know my face is crazed and wild. but I have her eyes, that mother's child in me. she's blessed with grace and smooth as a line. and when i shade, she helps me shine.... mama, I'll get by")
I will also give you some artists that have some really nice stuff, and your sure to find something... missy higgins has a lot of the "heavier" lyrical and meaningful songs.a great example in this case would be "drowning"
("cause I'm drowning... say goodbye and have a drink for us and good luck. find your way. cause love heals all conquers all...)
tori amos has lots of powerful songs as well. you can almost never go wrong with sarah mclachlan... another REALLY GOOD ONE is "tread water" by sara bareilles.
I hope this is helpful.

"heaven was needing a hero" jo dee messina

"if you want me to" ginny owens

"i am" nichole nordeman

is there a song your mom loved that you could dance to? the song itself might not be sad, but i feel like dancing to something she loved would be very emotional and a great way to honor her.

"One Moment More" by Mindy Smith

She wrote the song in memory of her mom. I was actually just listening to it. Here are the lyrics (so sweet and sad!):

"Hold me
Even though I know you're leaving
And show me
All the reasons you would stay
It's just enough to feel your breath on mine
To warm my soul and ease my mind
You've got to hold me and show me now

Give me
Just one part of you to cling to
And keep me
Everywhere you are
It's just enough to steal my heart and run
And fade out with the falling sun

Oh, please don't go
Let me have you just one moment more
Oh, all I need
All I want is just one moment more
You've got to hold me and keep me

Tell me that someday you'll be returning
And maybe
Maybe I'll believe
It's just enough to see a shooting star
To know you're never really far
It's just enough to see a shooting star
To know you're never really gone

Oh, please don't go
Let me have you just one moment more
Oh, all I need
All I want is just one moment more

Oh, please don't go
Let me have you just one moment more
Oh, all I need
All I want is just one moment more
You've got to hold me and maybe I'll believe

So hold me
Even though I know you're leaving"

what about the song "mama" by the spice girls?
it talks about growing up, the lessons you learn from them, and how much you really love them (:

Corrinne May: Fly Away

I danced to this song as my senior high school graduation solo before going off to college. Definite tear jerker, beautiful song though. I loved it.

When will you be home?" she asks
as we watch the planes take off
We both know we have no clear answer
to where my dreams may lead
She's watched me as I crawled and stumbled
As a child, she was my world
And now to let me go, I know she bleeds
and yet she says to me

You can fly so high
Keep your gaze upon the sky
I'll be praying every step along the way
Even though it breaks my heart to know we'll be so far apart
I love you too much to make you stay
Baby fly away

Autumn leaves fell into spring time and
Silver-painted hair
Daddy called one evening saying
"We need you. Please come back"
When I saw her laying in her bed
Fragile as a child
Pale just like an angel taking flight
I held her as I cried

You can fly so high
Keep your gaze upon the sky
I'll be praying every step along the way
Even though it breaks my heart to know we'll be so far apart
I love you too much to make you stay
Baby fly away

"You Raise Me Up" by Josh Groban is a beautiful and inspirational song. "Fly" by Celine Dion is another beautiful lyrical song.

^^^She asked for stuff sung by FEMALES. So no more Josh Groban. :?

A girl in my group's mother is dying of cancer right now. It's a slow process.
Her solo is for her mom, she's using "The Letting Go" by Melissa Etheridge.

No harsh sounds or vocals, very pretty and very sad.

I am sorry to hear about your mum. I lost my mum to cancer when I was 11. That was nearly 13 years ago now.

Did your mum have a favourite song? I know if I had to do a solo for my Mum the song I'd choose would be Yesterday by the Beatles or Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler or Back For Good by Take That because those were her favourite songs.

So that's something to think about, that might help you.

Once again, I am sorry for your loss. Good luck with your solo, I am sure she'd be very proud of you.

Erin.

I don't know if you're religious or spiritual, but this song has positive lyrics, but a very haunting and ethereal sound.

"Walking in the Air" sung by Chloe Agnew of the Celtic Woman group. It kind of tells the story of two people (referred to as "we" so it could be you and your mother) flying in the air and looking down at the Earth and everyone below. It could be something like you guiding your mother to Heaven. A positive thing, but still very sad.

here is a video with the song (you have to fast forward to 0:50 to get the beginning of the song).

youtube.com . . .

here are the lyrics as well:

[Intro:]
Walking in the air, floating the sky...
Floating in the air...

We're walking in the air
We're floating in the moonlit sky
The people far below are sleeping as we fly

We're holding very tight
I'm riding in the midnight blue
I'm finding I can fly so high above with you

Far across the world
The villages go by like trees
The rivers and the hills
The forest and the streams

Children gaze open mouth
Taken by surprise
Nobody down below believes their eyes

We're surfing in the air
We're swimming in the frozen sky
We're drifting over icy
mountains floating by

Suddenly swooping low on an ocean deep
Arousing of a mighty monster from its sleep

We're walking in the air
We're dancing in the midnight sky
And everyone who sees us greets us as we fly

I'm so sorry for your loss, but I know your mother will appreciate a dance dedicated to her.
