Great job on the historical mythology of Highland Dance, which certainly has its place in HD history. The actual Highland Dance history is still being researched, as there is little written that is accurate. Highland Dance traces its roots back to Scotland's early days, but the forms we dance today are very different form the original HD of ancient times. New research will be available near the end of 2012, as it is currently being considered very seriously in Nova Scotia, after it became focus of much debate in December of 2011 with program changes and claims at the Gaelic College in NS.

As piper I hope to become, I always look for the pipe tune history before learning a new tune. It helps a lot to play it. I think may be the same for Highland dancing. To know the history of the dance would help to dance. In the same way, I try to increase my knowledge about Highland dancing to be able, in the future, to play correctly pipe tunes for Highland dancing (very hard job!).
I've created a website to promote Highland piping history in France (I've added an English version) where you can find some more information to complete this excellent post about history of highland dancing. If interested, you can have a look on:

Soon I'll added the history of "Ghillie Callum" played for the "sword dance".

You are quite right! This is just the 'mythological' history of the dances ~ not much fact ~ but great stories that people now believe because they have been passed on and on.

This thread is great! I've sent the link to a number of my friends. A lot of this stuff I've never heard before, even though I've been dancing for six years now.

Thank you for all the information, I always love reading the history of my daughter's dancing, no matter how many times I hear it or read it. It makes me so proud to be part of such a great heritage-even if it is just by marriage.
