SONG IDEA FOR POINTE SOLO I'M CHOREOGRAPHING?
By bkenz

Hey everyone.
I'm choreographing a pointe solo for myself and i'm stuck with what to use for a song. I've done many plain classical ones before so i want to try something a little different. I'm really liking "the chairmans waltz" from memoirs of a geisha but i'm not sure if it will work. I need ideas!

Thanks a bunch.

Well if you want classical pointe, I really like "Bolero 1830." It is a cute Spanish feel to it and I did a pointe solo with it... so I'd recommend it! :)

Don't do Chariman's Waltz. There will be a ton of other people using it and it wont stand out.

If you want something really out there, why not ttry a techno version of the hall of the mountain king my greig, has a really great climax in the music.

the pirates of the caribbean soundtrack is amazing and we're actually choreographing a dance to "the kraken" (from dead man's chest) for our spring show. i'd really reccomend it.

At the talent show at my middle school three years ago, two girls did a pointe dance to a Britney Spears song- I think it was "Toxic". It was definitely more contemporary ballet than classical ballet. I thought it was really cool, and definitely different, so (unless you're a total classical purist) you might want to consider doing something totally "crazy" like that.

Some other songs I'd recommend-
-"Dark Blue" by Jack's Mannequin- though this might be more appropriate for lyrical than for ballet, but you could try it
-"Hero/Heroine" by Boys Like Girls
-"How I Go" by Yellowcard
-"Shadows and Regrets", also by Yellowcard- I think this could definitely be a good song for a pointe dance. I had to choreograph a 60 second solo for my dance class at school, and I used part of "Shadows and Regrets". I did ballet, but not pointe. I think the song could work really well for pointe. Just my ideas:)

Well, if you don't mind doing a freestyle ballet piece
"Brighter than Sunshine"- By Aqualung is good =]
"Rise"-by Ben's Brother is good

If you want something more jazzy try "i love paris" by peter cincotti! It is very upbeat and fun.

I actually really like using non-classical songs for pointe. Don't get me wrong, classical is awesome, but, i like going for the more unexpected. If you can pull it off I think you should try it.
My recommendation is See Who I Am by Within Temptation.

Really try to find something that you absolutely 100% love though

I really love the composer James Horner. He mostly does music for movies, notably Titanic. It's kind of classical music, but he uses some cool sounds and usually singing, too. It might not be what you're looking for, but it's worth checking out.

Try something by the Vitamin String Quartet. I quite like taking risks with ballet and doing something different so you could use something recent.

If you want to go more classical, I would recommend with "Nocturne" by Frederic Chopin. It's very pretty.

I know i just posted, but i forgot that if you want to do something a little more contemporary, you could try something from the "Unfaithful" movie soundtrack. Its a little different.

The Narnia soundtrack is kind of like Pirates of the Caribbean if you are interested in that type of thing...

A really beautiful soundtrack with a lot of emotion in it is the soundtrack for The Village. Particularly the tracks "Those We Don't Speak Of," which has a suspenseful build and a beautiful ending.

I agree about the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks! I'm actually choreographing a solo for myself this year and I'm most likely using He's a Pirate from the first movie. Not sure if it's going to be pointe or not, though.

My friend who is also choreographing her solo is using something from the Narnia movies, and I love that as well.

Some good bands to check out are:

A Fine Frenzy (All slower emotional songs)
Vitamin String Quartet (Someone already mentioned them but they are AMAZING!)

and some songs:
Nobody's Crying by Patty Griffin
If You're Out There by John Legend
Evening Prayer (also called Children's Prayer) from Hansel and Gretel (Opera or Ballet version)

ANYTHING (not the name of a song) FROM LENARD BERNSTEIN!
Vivaldi is amazing too
Gershwin is good for contemporary/jazzy ballet
Hope you find something you like :)

xox twinklee :)

Anaheim Ballet has a great CD on iTunes, which I LOVE dancing to. Those songs always inspire great choreography out of me.

for a more lyrical feel you could go with something from the "one" soundtrack or you could try "you found me" by the fray. Daft punk is ALWAYS fun to choregraph to aswell (: have fun and good luck!
