Ludwig Minkus (or Leon Minkus) war born 23rd of March 1826 in Gross Meseritsch near Brünn. Although no one is sure if this is his real date of birth. He studied in Vienna and started to compose pieces of music for violine when he was a teenager. He was also the head of an orchestra which competed with an orchestra of young Strauss. With 19 he went to Paris. Some experts say that he has written some of the music in the ballet Paquita (offically from Eduoard Deldevez).
1853 he became the director of the orchestra of Prince Nikolai Yussopow in St. Petersburg. 1861 he made contact with the Bolshoi and soon became their very own composer. He wrote the music for Petipas ballets. He wrote Don Quixote for the Bolshoi that be came very famouse. Very intersting is, that he had to compose for Petipas a lot of new parts for the ballet Giselle. His last work in Russia was La Bayadère. After he retired he went back to Vienna where he died the 7th of december 1917 (although this is not sure).

Some ballets he wrote the music for:

Don Quixote
La Bayadère
Paquita
The Butterfly
La Source

YAY FOR MINKUS! He never gets the credit for composing some of the world's greatest ballets quite like Tchaikovsky does. In fact none of his ballets sound the same, and its amazing how they are all in the style of a different country!

Yay! Go composers! True the ballet is about the dancers, but if there is no music there is no dance!

Thank you Piccola for adding the pictures. They are lovely, very special that we can only see part of the dancers so that the focus is more on the beautiful costumes (this would also be a good theme for a thread: Give some credit to the amazing people who make the beautiful costumes!) :)

Well said live4ever, music is so important. What would dance be without music?

Babou was so kind to tell me that La source was written bei Leo Delibes. As far as I know, Minkus contributed some parts of the music but I am not really sure. However, I just wanted to correct, that La Source is from Minkus (or from him alone) :)

Thank you very much Leggie for adding all those lovely pictures. They are just beautiful. I really love the one where the only the legs of the dancers in the corps are visible!

Hi Legwarmer, as always you have great pictures! I have a question about the picture labeled "Corp" (above) - do you know what ballet company this is?
