Heyy, the other day in cheerleading me and a friend started to learn backhandsprings. From my first go my coach told me I had a really good jump and arm movement. I didnt even need my spot while I first jumped however; when I get to like a handstand position I just stop.
It's like someone has a remote control and has pressed pause. The bhs is so quick I dont even relise ive not landed until the spots push me down.
Apparently it's quite amusing to watch but it's very annoying to me.
I know im jsut starting out but does anyone know what im doing wrong? lol

Without seeing you do the back handspring, I can't really tell you what is going on in the skill. I can provide some tips to help you however. So here we go.

This is progressing from the beginning of the skill to the end of the skill:

o1.) From your standing position, make sure to check your balance at first.

o2.) Relax to a sitting position, your back should be straight. Let your knees and hips flex to an angle of about ninety degrees.

o3.) Throw your arms up beside your head, making sure you have tight arms and tight elbows. While making the jump backwards, thrust your hips forward. From the moment of taking off for the skill extend your ankles so that your feet are pointing. As you are on the way back, arch your back.

o4.) ** Make sure you have a firm touch when your hands touch the surface. There should be a fast snapdown reflex as your legs reach the handstand position. Let the momentum of the skill swing your legs to the ground.

It seems to me as if, I am not sure of this, but it may be that you are taking the skill too slowly. I know whenever I was working on my back handspring, I was going relatively too slow. I would split my legs and get stuck in that position. Hopefully, these tips will work for you. If not, you can always tell me about the other problems you are having. I will do the best I can to help.

If that doesn't work, you might want to try handstand snapdowns. Kicking up into a handstand and as you get into it, quickly push off of the surface with your hands and snap your legs back down to the surface. Good luck! I hope this benefits you!
