Formed in 2006, Songs for Ceilidh blends traditional Celtic classics from Ireland, Scotland and Atlantic Canada with Cape Breton influenced originals and the occasional “popular” tune. “You are never quite sure what they are going to throw in,” says a bar patron. “One minute they are playing Whiskey in the Jar and the next, the fiddle is belting out the solo from Stairway to Heaven. It makes for a very interesting show.” And it should. Their name says it all; Ceilidh [Káy-Lee], a foot stomping, high energy party. In other words, a rip-roaring good time!
The four band members bring their own specific influences. Scott, hailing from Canada, sings lead vocals full of tradition. He also has a firm hand with the guitar and bodhran. Bryan plays the fiddle with a style straight from the American heartland. Chuck strums the twelve string with the feel of a generation of folk singers and Jay ties it all together with rhythms played on Latin drums.
“We’re looking for people to enjoy themselves and their surroundings.”, says Scott explaining the bands philosophy. “When people go out they want to have a good time. We look to pave the way.”
