I totally know what Bisou is talking about. I think we have all felt pressure to choreograph something fabulous whether it is for a sidewalk dance fest or an entire ballet. It is sooo disappointing when people don't receive a piece of choreography the way it was intended. I certainly put my blood sweat and tears into my choreo and it makes me want to jump off a cliff when others watch and say, "so?"
I have my opinions and am entitled to express them as it is a free country. But there is a place very near and dear to my heart where I can empathize what these people (choreographers) must go through. It's not like a sport, this is art! And yet it gets judged so harshly!
I couldn't imagine having a dancer's fate in my hands on top of everything else. I still feel that a truly wonderful dancer could make anything work, period. I would watch Nureyev pick his nose and say, "ooohhh, he digs for gold so artistically." I haven't been smitten with a single dancer this year. Is it coincidence the choreo isn't doing it for me? Probably not. |
