Teachers - Competitions Creation Dance Championships? en>fr fr>en By dancer64 Comments: 284, member since Tue Nov 22, 2005On Tue Jul 01, 2008 06:08 PM
I am looking to attending Creation Dance. Do they run on time, are competition workers friendly? How is judging, easy, hard fair? Overall experience? We will be attending an in-state Nationals so that is why I'm interested in them. Any feed back would be appreciated. 9 Replies to Creation Dance Championships? |

My experience with this competition was awful, of course others might have had a different experience BUT i can only wish I was that lucky.
The venue they choose was horrible with a draft from outside (mid winter in New England) which really hurt my dancers becuase it was hard for them to stretch and get warmed up when they were freezing. dressing rooms were located in the boiler room? The girls working the back stage were local college students who could have cared less and were texting on their phones the whole time. The stage was in terrible condition and one girl actually ripped her foot opened.
The judges had the most rediculous comments for our dances. Like that they thought one girl should put her hair back? when her hair is about an inch long to begin with I would love to know how that would be possible? They thought that crocadile rock was an innapropriate song for a 9yr old? Said one group should be wearing tights (they were in brown bike shorts...not booty shorts they came to mid thigh). As far as judging I think they focused on things beside the important like how I got no technique remarks on any dances and most about costumes and songs and such. Which I would like but I would also like some cratique on the choreography and technique as thats the main part of the performance.
As far as time goes they were ahead but judges took 10 min at the beginning of the show to get up in the middle of the stage and pray? I am a believer in god and such but it was just random and uncalled for as you can't assume everyone practices that.
Awards were totally random and I didn't get their scoring at all when one girl who ran off stage placed higher then others in the category who finished and were technically good?
I could really go on and on but you get the point. I would not recommend them and I know there are competitions that are more deserving of your money and time and that will give you a better experience then this one. |

Ok I didn't read anyone elses opions because i didn't want it to change mine but our studio did NOT like this competition at alllll.
1) They ran EXTREMELY early. I mean HOURS early and then were very rude to us when we explained that certain dancers were not there to perform. THis was very frustrating.
2) EVERY SINGLE one of our dancers got the EXACT same award. Now I love my students to death but they should NOT have all gotten the same awards.
3) When we listened to the tapes they said literally about 10 sentences total on over 20 DANCES that we brought to the competition. On most tapes they said Welcome to the stage and then they said good job when it was over.
5)The week before the competition we finally got our schedule form the people that run the competition. The lady taht talked to my SO asked her where the venue was located and what it looked like inside because she had no idea! This sounded extremely unproffesional to me. Not to mention that at this particular venue, my students had to change in a HALLWAY because there was zero places to change. The competition had only ONE bathroom available for the dancers, parents, and audience to use which only had TWO stalls. One of which was broken. So, I would say there was about 500 people there and there was ONE womens bathroom stall. NOT FUN.
4) THE BIGGEST PROBLEM with the competition in my (and the parents who paid hundreds of dollars to be there) opinion was the fact that the MC who talked in between all the dances was ALSO a judge. He was the only male judge so it was easy to tell which score sheet was his, and on some of our sheets they didn't even score the students!!!!! I'm not even joking! For two or three sections there just was not a score on his sheets!
My studio and the paretns decided this was NOT ever going to be a competition we attended again. We had a terrible experience! I'm sorry to sound so negative but I know if I was a paying customer I would NOT have been thrilled in the least bit! |

I forgot to add...
The person above me said taht there was little help backstage but I would just like to let you know at the venue we were at there were THREE people working the ENTIRE competition. The judges. THAT WAS ALL. I was appalled! There was not a single person backstage. not one! |

Creation Dance Championships is a Christian Dance Competition, hence the prayer before starting. If you read their website about the director you will learn that, so really it isn't innappropriate for them to do this, it is what they are about. She doesn't advertise that it is a Christian based organization because she wants to offer her comp to everyone!
I'm sorry you have such a bad experience, I do have to say this past year was rough due to inhouse staff changes that were not for the better, and I am not sure this future season will rectify that situation, one can only hope. But all in all it is a fair, on time, event if the director herself is actually running the show, if you end up in a city where she isn't the director you more than likely will experience some issues as not all her staff will operate at her high standards, and she unfortunately only tends to hear her staff's side of the issue.
Don't give up on Creation. They do have the potential to be a stellar competition! They must be doing some things right because they just keep growing and growing. |

That's really nice that they are a Christian competition but that doesn't make up for the lack of back stage help, the bad tapes and scores and the terrible venues they chose. I also didn't see anything on their website about being a Christian competition? |

I attended the competition about 7 years ago, the the teacher pro category. The venue it was in was a local high school-and not a good one. We are a very large metropolitan area and there are numerous venues that would have been able to accomodate the competition. We did not know either that they were a christian competition. That doesn't both me so much because I am christian, but when I was injurred and passed out during the competition I woke up to the judges praying over me! The only other thing that really botherred me was that one of the judges looked like she was about 15. Thats not to say that she wasn't experienced, but I don't think she was capable of judging a competition. They also(and I don't know if they still don't) did not give trophies. They gave medallions on a ribbon. I almost liked this because too many people think competition is about the trophies you bring home, and this way no one knew afterward who had won what. I suppose it all depended on what you look for in a competition. We never went back, but it wasn't the worst experience. |

They didn't pray at our competition. Hmmm I wonder why? Maybe they stopped doing that this past year?
We did recieve plaques for our dances. I know stuff like this is expensive but they were extremely cheap looking and had a very cheesy sticker on them. Blech.
We will NOT return to this competition again. |
