Bane of my existence right now, really. I'm unable to find regular 'tap' screws in local hardware stores - they're all too long. Meaning to get new screws I have to generally buy new taps, or take taps off old shoes (and I'm running out of old shoes to 'ransack'!).

:(

Suggestions? Are there 'tap-sized' screws I can buy off the internet somewhere?

EDIT: What makes this particularly frustrating is that right now, my #1 and #2 pairs of shoes are both out of action due to screw-related problems right now. (black oxfords and black flat buckleups) I don't have tan flats so this means going up to any of my three sets of sport heels. BUT I DON'T WANT TO WEAR SPORT HEELS!!! Cry. Frustration.

I vaguely recall buying a pack of tap screws from a dance shop in Brisbane when I lived there. Have you checked your nearest dance shop?

Yes. She had a bunch of spares she gave me (taken from a packet of screws sent to her buy manufacturer to match exact number of taps she'd been given. Not quite sure how she was going to fix that discrepancy up but wasn't going to complain at the time!!!) but no 'screws for sale'.

The only other local shop is Bloch. I think I've made it fairly clear in the past how I feel about them :P

On second thoughts there's a better dance store a half hour's drive from me. I should email them and see what they offer...

Good luck... *crosses fingers for you*

I haven't been able to find screws anywhere here either, so it's not just an Oz problem. It's not an issue for me right now since I have just got new shoes (btw they're working out great, much easier to work with since I don't have to try and grip them any more!) but I just know that somewhere a few months down the line those screws are going to be working their way out. Companies should really offer packs of spare screws - they'd definitely sell.

Hmm, so I went to the shoe guy today and he said that I should wait until his boss gets back next week and get him to have a look at everything because he's experienced with dance shoes. That's what the LAST guy said too (about dance shoe experience) but I'm willing to give these guys a go. It would be nice if my local shoe guy can do a decent job - saves me mailing them up to the other 'good guy' who lives hours up north!! haha.

Just had a kind of obvious idea. If your preferred shoes (the flats) are out of commission, and you're out of screws, and have to switch to your sport heels - isn't there any way you can temporarily cannibalise your sport heels? Since you don't want to wear them anyway, you could use the screws from one of those pairs until you can get some new ones? Or are the screws on those different to the ones on your flats?

Same screws. Here are the problems:

Oxfords - screw head literally stuck in tap, separated itself from actual screw bit still in sole of shoe. Needs specialist treatment to be removed, then hole re-plugged and new screw put in.

Flats - done by guy who screwed in nice and straight, but insisted that taps were NOT to be positioned right against the end of the shoe, but more in the ball of foot area (as covered by a past post). No matter how many times I re-screw they are falling out after every routine - the taps just need to be removed, replugged, then re-screwed in properly.

The guy who did my sport heels is the REALLY GOOD GUY whose screws I basically never have to replace until it's time to replace the taps. I don't sabotage these kind of shoes ;)

Ah. Yes, I see the problems. Gah once more for stupid shoe guys who don't listen about placement of taps. Good luck on getting them sorted without having to mail them off!

Bleugh!

Shoe guy basically said both shoes needed to be completely re-soled and all taps/rubber non-slip soles put on again. Additionally, he wanted to send it all to his 'master' in some place that's hours away...$130 each shoe, just for the resoling (he said they'd put on the taps and non-slip sole for free). Egad! I could buy new shoes for $130!!!

Looks like I'll be pulling out my RIP shoes (inner sole wearing away, that's why I let them enter "retirement" :D) and sending up my shoes north anyway. Looks like it'd be closer that way...!!!
