Sydney Drop in dance classes en>fr fr>en By oz_helen Comments: 10064, member since Sat Aug 10, 2002On Sun Jul 13, 2008 08:03 AM
So when I'm in Sydney next year, I'm not sure what my schedule will be like, but I probably won't be able to sign up for an entire term/semester of dance classes.
What places in Sydney offer classes on a casual basis? I already know of SDC. I'm probably looking for jazz, as I think I can get my tap workout elsewhere.

Brent St, Dance Central, Mango Dance Centre. Most of the big inner-city dance studios with 'professional teachers' are all drop-ins.
I actually really want to go to Dance Central - they have Brazilian Samba classes there I want to try Want to do them with me when you move up? Just think of the cardio workout!!!!!! |

Sounds interesting, but my main aim is to brush up on my skills for auditions.

There's the odd jazz technique class here and there that's reasonably good. The down side to all the casual classes is that often they're a commercial jazz kind of class (all bootyshaking), whereas you probably want something a bit more technical? |

Yes, I want technical jazz. No commercial stuff. That won't help me with MT auditions.
I'm talking floor work, leaps, turns, etc etc.
Maybe I'd be better off looking into contemporary classes??

I am assuming you don't want to look into SDC?
I tried a few drop in classes in the Surry Hills and Newtown area when I first moved here and honestly, in terms of floor and corner work and technique driven classes: none matched what I got from SDC. Most just offered commercial forms of dance for entertainments sake.
I know I rant and rave about them all the time, but honestly, I reckon there is no better drop in class on offer. Especially in my broadway Jazz class, majority of the class is spent doing floor work and corner work. The ballet classes are incredibaly centre and barre work focused.
Heck, they even run several technique and stretching classes a week My turnout improved ten fold when I started doing floor work classes with Brian Carbee - his attention to detail in his casses is something thats hard to find in open classes.
Hey Glitters, can I come to a samba class with you? Seriously! |

^Oh no, I'm interested in SDC, just wanted lots of options for scheduling purposes. I will probably be doing an acting course two nights a week, so I need to ensure I can go somewhere that won't clash.

Samba is HOT Tigs. I highly recommend!
If you can find her, Dale Pope is the nicest and most awesome lyrical jazz teacher ever with strong emphasis on jazz technique (not pseudo-ballet technique - JAZZ technique). Sue Ellen Chester would have been my other suggestion, but alas the sunny shores of QLD have lured her back to her childhood home |
