There have been alot of posts about how to get motivation to practise, how long to practise etc. so I thought it would be good to post it alot together. The tips come from the links at the bottom of the page.

Getting Motivation to Practise
1. Practise to cool music
2. Give yourself 2 choices; dance or something else you don't like(i.e laundry, cleaning, gardening etc.)
3. Watch LOTD, parade of champions, Riverdance
4. Reward your self for practising
5. Set goals
6. Practise where there are no distractions
7. Practise with a friend

What to practise
1. Drills
2. Break down steps w/o music
3. do one dance/day and focus on technique
4. stretch or cross train(biking, swimming, running)
5. practise dances to all different types of music to prepare for not knowing what the musicien will play at a feis.

How Long to Practise
1. Start with 30 mins then work up to more time
2. Have a set amount of time and stick to it
3. If you don't like to practise, take more classes and stretch/condition at home

Where to Practise
1. School Gym
2. Tennis Courts
3. See if any younger/less experienced dancers will let you use their floor if you tutor/help them.
4. See if theres any local dance studios you can rent or use. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Good Luck, if anybody has more links or advice please share!

try practising in a pool
you can do normal water aerobics which helps to strengthen your muscles or try leaps, doubles (bicycles), or wraparounds in the water. I've been doing it for a couple weeks and it's really helped with my doubles, plus there's no impact so it isn't making my shin splints or knees hurt at all. it also helps with turnout because of the resistance.

You want to make sure you are practicing in your dance shoes. You should be consistent with a warm up or routine. Elite athletes always have a set routine they perform before practices and games. This will get you in the mindset. Never slop through steps. Practicing moves or choreography just learned should be practiced turned out and crossed like it will be done once it has been mastered. Just because something is new do not focus only on getting the piece correctly .. establish technique from the start.

This is such a great post. You definately want to practice with different music, because the music could sound really foreign to you once you're up on stage. It's happened to me, lol. Thanks for making this a sticky and putting this all together!

What about seeing is an older dancer (meaning one in a higher level, ie Champs levels) would help you practice? This is such a good post, by the way!

Practice at least two of each dance a day then several weeks before you compete do four of each a day. If you complain to yourself on this then why do you do it.

great tips.

my daughter hates stretching so i will make her read this... i also think she needs to read the part about either do it or question why you are competing.

you guys are really great.

i also think it helps if you practice with a friend.

Thanks this really helped but I was just wondering about time tables for practicing like how much time you should spend on each thing.

I spend at least 15 minutes on each of my dances, 20 on the harder ones. If it's hard shoe, I drill, then practice it on loud floor without music so I can hear all the beats. Then practice to music, like they said earlier, use all kinds of music (remixed, traditional accordion, etc.) because you never know what the musician will use. Then, I break it down piece by piece to perfect it. :) Good luck!

Dancing on your own can be the toughest to get motivated. We always used to invite friends over when dd was younger. Loved all the great suggestions!

this has really helped me and my daughter, my daughter always has the will to practice but I have never danced myself so haven't really known what to do to point her in the right direction and help her
really valuable information and easy to follow :)
