Locked by dust2dust (147104) on 2008-07-22 06:47:35 I've hand my "HA HA HA!!!" Moment. Lets not fight over this.
Unlocked by hylndlas (107168) on 2008-07-22 13:30:53 No one is fighting....some of us are just wondering why you would do something like this after your "issues " you had with your parents.
Frozen by hylndlas (107168) on 2008-07-22 13:32:50 Just because you regret posting something doesn't make it a valid reason to lock it.
I get payed on tuesday (my Bday!) and it will be for around 250 or 300 dollars. I already have 360 dollars in my bank account. Because of recent grocery shopping, ect. My parents right now have 224 dollars in the bank and will be paid on friday. That means for TWO WHOLE DAYS i will have more money than my parents. Hahaha!!! Granted my dads paycheck will be a thousand something, but still. For two glorious days i will be more wealthy than my parents. I'm really going to enjoy that feeling, even if it is kinda mean

My first job out of school, the summer before going to university, I worked in the same building as my mother. She was a civil servant; I was a casual worker to help with the summer influx of work. I worked data entry; she worked policy.
My first paycheque I was deducted a hefty amount of tax as it was my first official job (other than the occasional spot of babysitting or dog walking). Thus I had no tax code. By the time I got my second cheque, HMRC had sorted the code and I got a big rebate of first month's tax, plus no tax on my second month's wages, plus I'd done some overtime which was paid at time-and-a-half for Saturdays and double time on Sundays - including pay for any travel time, plus travel expenses refunded.

I've been lucky enough to grow up in a household that was debt-free (including the house) for almost as long as I can remember, so I really doubt that I'll ever exceed my parents' income / savings / assets while they're still living.
I find it a little odd that you're kind of giddy over your parents' misfortune, though. I've had just a few dollars in the bank praying for payday before, and it's not fun. I can't imagine how not-fun it is with a couple of kids as well.

^ It didn't sound to me like she was excited about her parents' misfortune, it just sounded like she was excited about the fact that the parent/child roles were switched a little. That doesn't happen very often!

I understand...but I will never ever be happy if I had more money than my parents at one point!
I couldn't do it, anyway. My mother makes enough for two full-time workers alone...I will never measure up to her money, education, or intelligence wise.

I loaned my mom over a thousand dollars by the time I was eighteen. You start to resent it really quickly. Especially when you're struggling to pay for your own schooling. (I still haven't been paid back completely.)

^ Heh, what misfortune? My parents bought themselves some presents (like a new cook pot and groceries from the nice store) with that money, and they're getting payed a couple thousand dollars with combined paychecks in a few days. I supose i should have cleared that up. We have groceries, gass, ect and no bills, so they've nothing they need to spend money on. I sense no misfortune there. KayElle was right, i'm just amused at the role reversal. And i'm happy with the fact that i earned all that money myself.

^ Haha, your gonna steal from your kids? Oh my.
Your parents arent in debt or poor..and you'll have that role reversal for awhile. Then itll go away But yeah..nothing wrong with having that little excitement for 2 days. BE HAPPY. Who cares what anyone else thinks. Its your money..so do/think/gloat how you want.

It's "paid" not "payed". When you figure that one out, maybe you deserve the extra money.
^Was that really necessary?
Lol I get where you are coming from with the funny role reversal thing. Personally I get paid weekly so perhaps have more money in my account than my parents at the end of the month but I've not really thought about it much. I do earn more than my Mum though which I kind of feel a bit bad about. It's a strange feeling.

OMG, i'm so freaking sorry! I know i dont deserve all that money now! Obviously I dont deserve to be paid for working nine hours, cleaning vomit off floors, serving people food, mucking out bathrooms, cleaning tables, getting yelled at by costomers because they ordered light onions and their burger was 'swimming' in onions. All those hours in the back, burning my hands with water while i cleaned the slime and grease off the hopper. Taking orders, making drinks, running my food, and handing food out because i'm the only one working the drivethrough window.
Thankyou. Finally i can see that i dont deserve my $6.50 an hour for that! I'm going to give it all to my parents, so that when they get 2,100 bucks they can have a nice little bonus so that they can buy themselves more things. I'm going to the library now to rent a dictionary and study my lazy ass off.
I dont deserve to be a little happy that for once, i can see myselve emerging into (gasp) the world of adulthood! Bringing in a paycheck, and saving all of it instead of blowing it on clothes. My parents who bought themselves two le cruset pots, olive wood spoons, a 40 dollar cookbook and much more with that money are clearly the victims here.

If ever a day comes when I have more money than my parents I will surely take everyone out to celebrate/rub it in.
My father makes about $150,000 per year more than I do, and my mother's monthly spousal support payments are aproximatly 4 times what I make per month.
So really, for this senario to happen I will need to win the lottery, or marry rich. Id much prefer the first option
I can only hope one day Charlotte will take me out somewhere nice because she has so much more than her mommy!

It will be a long time before I have more money then my parents because A) I'm fourteen and won't be working more than part time for quite some time, and B) my parents have a lot of money saved up - and I mean quite a lot.

Silly silly me.
Uhh....calm down.
I think that the major contentions on this thread are basically between those who are like "That would be cool to have more money than my parents, even for a minute!" and then those who have either been in that position and hated it, or those who think that it's weird to think about how much money you have in comparison to your parents.
I'm personally of the latter, because role-reversals, even thinking of them, is seen badly in my culture. Parents are parents, and that's it. I would never even be thinking about it (not that I'd catch up to my mother- EVER), which is why it just strikes me the wrong way that some people do. I could see it from the other side, but I just wasn't brought up to think about it that way, and I hope that my children won't, with glee, compare their finances with mine (not that they will ever know about every penny I have until they are able to understand finances).
If you're just proud of yourself, why bring up the parents thing? Y'know?
That's just how I feel about it. Enjoy your saved money!

Wait.....aren't you the same poster that a few months back was worried about her parents and what they might think about her DDN activity? Erm yeah.
Color me confused....but after all that drama why are you gloating on the internet about something like this? Aren't you opening a BIG can of worms? Kinda not smart on your part isn't it?

^Considering her age, a few months is plenty of time to grow. Albeit I don't remember all the details of that post... I think we can excuse her for wanting to share a bit of a "hah hah!" kinda post that I think the majority of us feel at one point or another.
I know I've got a few more years before I'm making more than my parents. That said, as soon as they find out I am making more... they'll be wanting me to pay for dinner so I'm going to be keeping that one a secret.

^^ Naw, the stuff they were getting on me was for was a different subject.
Parents are parents, and that's it.
Back2dance, i think thats kind of why i made this thread (which i'm obviously regreting now ) Is that, at 17, one of my main priorities is to become independant from them, and to try and for a few days having a comperable (is that even word?) balance in the bank is part of that. I supose you could compare it to...wanting to be a proffesional ballerina. And because of a scheduling issue you where put in the same class as Polina Semionova for a few days. For a few days you 'were at her level'. You know?

I hope my comment wasn't taken in a way that it wasn't intended. I didn't mean for it to be critical at all because I certainly can understand where you're coming from and, of course, you deserve your fun. I was just pointing out that, while fun for a couple of days, the role reversal gets old fast and I hope you're in a position where the roles are reversed for a prolonged amount of time. It sucks and, quite frankly, I have a lot of resentment towards my parents because of it.

Combined, my parents make around $400,000 a year. To top it off, they're huge savers. You'd think the world's economy was going to fail any second the way they save. So, unless, like Jenna, I were to marry rich (boyfriend is a broke college student) or win the lottery(I don't buy tickets), I will probably never make more than them. However, in three years I will be starting off my career making around $38,000 a year, so I'll be happy just to be able to take my mom out to an expensive dinner

Well, that's just what I found weird. I had (and hopefully WILL have!) many moments in which I was proud af my assertion of independence from my parents, and they all had to do with ME. They had to do with my first job offers, internship offers, choosing what I wanted to do in life, invitations to big events, etc. etc. I never compared my independence with THEIR status. I think that if I ever made more money than my mother one day, I would be like "Huh, that's funny, I owe her a ton of it!" but I wouldn't measure my acheivement against theirs.
I think that there is absolutely nothing wrong with being proud of saving money. I think that there's something weird with the comparison with your parents' (albeit temporary) financial status or using that as a measuring point. Like I said, I wasn't brought up to look at my goals that way, and that's a personal (cultural) thing. I would be interested in hearing how others view the situation, so I didn't see any reason to lock the thread.
