Most believe the Kilgore Rangerettes were the original drill team, but Gussie Nell Davis started the Greenville High School Flaming Flashes in 1928, before moving on to Kilgore. Though their routine also used batons and sometimes even trumpets, they did dance and perform half-time shows.
