This explains a lot!

When I (very briefly) did gymnastics, when I was about 6 or so, I wondered why there were big wooden ladders against the wall...

Now I understand! :P

Thanks for posting!

Wow. I sort of hate my life. Sort of like I hate Irina because she's so amazing. Except I hate my life because I'm not amazing. I'm just kidding though...I admire such beautiful flexibility and training. That first picture is my favorite. She looks so serious and her legs are just so beautiful and have such a lovely hyperextension. I don't recoginize her, though...Pardon my stupidity, but is she a rhythmic gymnast? I just ask because they have such beautiful bodies.

We have this at my dancing ! I was wondering where they got such such an amazing idea from! This has helped me alot with getting past slit and is great to use for stretches where you are usually on a barre' because it gives you a greater range of movement, so I would definately have to reccommend this for anyone who can get there hands on one :)

HA I saw the title pic and I saw who posted it and I thought it was you, and said to myself 'wait--she's bendy but she isn't THAT bendy...' but nope, it's the rhythmic gymnasts.

Those inspirational rhythmic gymnasts who we love to hate... dunno about y'all but I'm definitely stretching my splits tonight

The mind really does boggle, looking at those photos. Those girls must work SO hard to gain that level of flexibility. It's so impressive!

Edited by NinaBallerina_ (198703) on 2009-01-11 03:21:58 wanted to add something
I just want to clear something out here. Just like " Ballerinaa" I'm also from sweden, and these walls are not tools for stretching :P
We call them "ribbstol" ( "bar- chair" to translate it word by word ) it's simply many bars put together making a "wall".
I don't know if you have seen a simle bar up and between a doorway in somwone's home? they use it for strenthening arms and stomach-muscles. This bar is the same as these "swedish walls" you call them, the only difference is that the "sweidish walls" are bigger and usually to big for home use.

These walls are acually like a symbol in swedish school gymnastic halls, because we have them all over the walls in every school in the country. I acually think they've been a symbol for gymnastic halls in over 50 years, and as long as I've been living they have never been used in the physical education classes in school, they just hang there and kids climb on them.
observ that when I talk about gymnastic halls, I don't mean gymnastic as a sport, I mean the gymnastic hour you have ones a week in the swedish school system. It has nothing to do with "gymnastic", but ballgames, athletic sports and such.

of course these are great to use in stretching too, but it's not the main purpose (:

and please tell me why you call them a "swedish wall" ? I've never heard of it and it would be interessting to know !

I would love to have just a tad of this flexibility, but I would have the time for training to reach or stay at such a hight level. It's just a hobby for me.

I don't know why it is called the sw. wall. It was the first time for me to hear this. We always said "ladder" or "climbing wall"?!
Holy Moly

I've seen over-splits like this before, but it still amazes me every time. Great post, and thanks for the mild heart attack. =)
