Locked by tassiemum (158209) on 2008-09-19 21:56:47 We've been there, seen that, done everything!

So, 2 adults and 2 kids are off to/coming to Adelaide for 4 days from September 11. We are staying in central Adelaide, won't have a car, and the kids will be dancing all day Saturday.

Any cheap, kid-friendly, easy to get to, ideas for Friday and Sunday would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

C.

Hi tassiemum,

I'm a highland dancer from Adelaide, but unfortunately I won't be joining you at the championship this year as I don't take my dancing seriously enough for that type of thing now that I'm much older - the much smaller comps are plenty for me!

It's an interesting co-incidence but I've just returned from a week in Tasmania. It was a first for me and it's definitely somewhere I want to get back to soon to explore a little better.

As for things to do in Adelaide, check out this website www.southaustralia.com . . . . It gives a number of ideas for things to do in Adelaide for families.

In my opinion, you could have a pretty good day trip down to the beach side suburb of Glenelg. It's really easy to get to by Tram from the city and over the weekend I think they still use the 1929 vintage trams. Once there, it's a pretty tourist and family friendly place. The best thing for the kids would be the Beach House, that's full of fun things to do like dodgem cars, bumper boats, mini golf ... There's also a shark museum down there and plenty of good places to have lunch or get an ice-cream.

I'm not sure how old the kids are (or how active you parents are) but you can also hire bikes for free in the city itself and down at Port Adelaide. If you borrow the bikes in the city, there is a really nice bike/walking path along the River Torrens running right through the middle of the city that could provide an entertaining but free activity. I'm not such a fan of Port Adelaide but there are some cool museums there (Seahorse, Train, Maritime and Military Vehicle) and apparently if you head out towards the Port River, you will often see dolphins.

Maybe, it's because I grew up here but it really seems to me that there was much more to do in Tasmania than there is here. Let me know if I can be of any more help to you and I wish your kids good luck for the competition.

Liz

Just had another thought --

The Royal Adelaide Show starts today and will continue until the 13th of September. I know it's not really a touristy type of thing but it could be a fun thing to do with the family and it's really easy to get to by public transport. Check out the website for more info (www.theshow.com.au).

Thanks Liz! I found the SA website and I'm pretty sure we'll be going to the show. Kids are under 12, and it's me and my mum, not another parent, so I don't know about bike riding. The kids would be fine, but I'd not want to embarrass myself! We went to the Transport Museum when we were there for C of C in 2006, for DS.
What a shame we can't meet at the comp. I've met a few DDN highland folk about the place.

Thanks again, and I'm glad you enjoyed Tassie. Maybe you'd like to come to our Championships- they're not big at all!

Chris
