What's the difference between a whip and a layout?

A whip is a back handspring with no hands. It is low to the ground and arched, as it gives the look of the feet whipping over the head.

A layout is a back salto (like a back tuck) but in a straight body position. It is done much higher up in the air and the body is straight and not arched.

riley's right a whip back is just a little higher then a backhanspring, while a layout has a lot of lift off the ground.
