Flyer, help? en>fr fr>en

Hello, I'm trying out for my school's cheerleading team but I've never done it before, I've only done ballet (long story as to why I tried out). The "audition" is actually go to a couple of pratices then they pick the final team. I went to the first practice and I was put as flyer and I really LOVED it and people told me I was doing pretty good but the thing is, after a while, when I got tired, I kept falling non stop, so what's a good way to stop that from happening? what are good excercices I can do at home to help me? any tips and tricks for a(hopefully) new flyer?

Try building up your stamina. Start running and doing jumping jacks and your cheering jumps. If you are getting tired you need more stamina. Make sure you get plenty of water too. Good luck & I hope you make the team!

Well if you keep collapsing mid-air then you're coach is obviously making you and the rest of your stunt-group practise stunts constantly, just politely ask your teacher to ease off all the stunts, but if you're too scared (LOL), then just stretch before practise and after and always warm up, then you should be eager to get started!

Hope I've helped

Thank you very much for your advices! I had my second pratice today but I didn't do stunts since one of my bases quit and my back-spotter had to go somewhere, so I basicly front spotted for different groups the whole stunting time. The other flyers were learning cradles, the coach/captain said she's going to teach me next week but to be prepared, any tips on it?

So by saying you were just learning cradle I assume you are a new squad? What is your squad name?

I cheer for Fusion :)

We're not really a new squad but there's a lot of new people this year since all the seniors graduated (and they were practically the whole team lol). So it's pretty much back to basic for everyone old or new :P We're just called (school name) Lynx, not really that creative lol I like the name Fusion, it's competitive, right?

The best thing I ever learned as a flyer was called "dumbstick" basically the idea behind it is as the flyer you are a dumbstick, kind of like a broom stick when you hold the end of a broom stick to balance it the entire thing has to be straight. If the bases under you move you dont you just stand there and do not move! squeeze every muscle in your body, dont be nervous and trust the bases. hope this makes sense and helps

Nope, I'm actually from Canada lol not very known for cheer. Have fun at your competition! I don't know when will our first competition will be, we're really at the starting point right now with only 3 out of 14 girls (yes, we're really that small of a team) that have some cheer experience, but we're working so hard and starting to come together and the coach has big plans for us :P Because of people quitting, joining, quitting, I've switched from flyer, to base for one practice, to front spot for most practices, our number has finally settled and my coach told me to get ready to be a flyer and base and front spot at next practice and during our upcoming routine, I will not get bored lol
Oh yes, mightymouse, that actually makes so much sense, I've never thought about it, it's a good visualisation, I'll do it!

I transitioned from elite ballet to elite cheer and the ballet definitely helped. I am a flyer now and the ballet helps my balance in the air, but I feel you on the getting tired thing. Eh, cheer practice=long, hard, tiring. As the season progresses your "cheer stamina" will build up, it's a lot different than your "ballet stamina". Good luck!

actually, thats my SECOND competition, our coach got us a place in a competition at the last minute in Worcester, we didn't win though, and all the squads didn't follow the rules (routines were too long) and basically they were just dance routines, so hopefully Telford is a bigger and better competition x

Ballet helps a lot in the locking too. Because in ballet, we have to be 'tight' to execute certain moves. It's the same in cheerleading when you are on stunt. You have to be 'tight' so that you gain your center of gravity and that your bases are able to control you more.

I am a female base and I really hate flyers who are not 'tight' in flying. It makes the stunt very sloppy, not sharp enough. And most importantly, it makes the stunt falls.

For exercises to do, I believe abominal plays an important part since its the core anyway. So do lots of crunches and leg-lifts to work out those stomach muscles.

For stamina, running is the best thing. To obtain the best results, sprint a distance, jog a distance, and repeat it.
