Thank you! This should help me a lot. I think that my main problem, though, is that I sometimes "zone out". I hope that this will help me stay more focused :)

sometimes just simply asking the teacher to go over the routine once more can help you and probably others in your class if you were finding an exercise difficult to remember... yea the teacher might get annoyed but she will get over it and you'll be able to the combination way better...

^That may be true, but I think of learning combinations as a skill that that not only can be learned but something I can improve at. Also, the teacher (I'm one myself) expects you to learn them, so while it is good to ask questions when you are not sure, the teacher shouldn't spoon feed you the combination.

Happy Dancing! :)

I must admit-when I saw this, I laughed (well giggled actually). I'm the kind of student who will sometimes space out and not pay attention at all, choosing instead to stick in the back to learn the combination...more like chat with my friends and then watch quickly to stick it in my mind :] shh...don't tell my teachers!

This post is extremely well thought out and it is such a good piece of advice. Another thing that might work in combination with this linear approach is repeating the steps to yourself as the teacher says them. Echoing the steps in your head helps keep the steps fresh in your mind and decreases the panic that sets in when a long combination comes up in class

This is one of the best tips I've ever gotten regarding ballet. This and turns are my main issues in ballet. About time to remedy that! Next up, 32 fouettes. Any tips for THAT? ;-P

Interesting tip, thank you. Just the thought of having to remember a long combination is enough to put anyone off

This approach also has the advantage that, similar to memorizing a piece of music to play by heart, the beginning gets practiced way more than the end because you stop then go back to the beginning and start over. The the initial parts tend to get way repetition than the latter ones.

Besides using the memory aid of a 'song' in your head, there is also PHRASING. If the piece is, for example, to 4 beats, then there can be phrases and sub-phrases commencing at bars 1 and 5 of 1/2-3-4- 5-6-7-8 2/2-3-4-5-6-7-8 3/2-3-4-5-6-7-8 etc.

Applying these principals would yield

1/ ??? 5 ??? 2/ ??? 5 ??? 3/ ??? 5 ???

followed by

1/2 ??? 5 6 ??? 2/2 ??? 5 6 ??? 3/2 3 ??? 567 ??? etc.

Dance is supposed to present ideas through movement in combination with music, generally speaking so why take the movements completely out of their musical context... the brain remembers (recalls) things better when the things are in a context, research into applied psychology has shown.

I learn from the music and not so much from going over steps and everyone is different

This is such a great tip! Thank you so much! I always have problems remembering sometimes even 8 step combinations and it bothers me so much. Can't wait to try this out at class.

So helpful! Some of my instructors talked a mile a minute but if I followed that, I think I'd feel a lot more like I was keeping up then struggling. Thanks again!

I really need to try this!! I always forget combinations! I agree that this would also be a good way to choreograph! I always do something similar if I choreograph. Thanks!

I would try this except I'm afraid to... Would a teacher yell at you for moving (not choreography) when your knowledge of steps is X....X....X?

I'm really worried about learning long combinations and it's the single biggest obstacle for me. I have pretty severe ADHD and had trouble learning Katas when I did Karate as a kid.

Though maybe my body will take over if it's ballet. Who knows. But it is a very real worry for me. I have a similar attitude to the OP towards these things already but I'm afraid I may be a severe case!
