I read Hamlet and Midsummer Night's dream in my drama class in 8th grade. I'm in 9th grade now and we're reading Romeo and Juliet.

Grade 9 we had to do some intro into Shakespeare where we just learned some things about him and read some scenes but it was definetly not a play study.

Grade 10 was the first year I was forced to read a play and analyze it. In grade 10 we did "Romeo and Juliet" grade 11 we did "Much Ado About Nothing" and grade 12 we did "Hamlet"

Never.

Which actually bugged me, because I allready liked Shakespeare during schooltime and was actually looking forward to it. It would be finally something to read that I would truly enjoy, but instead we read books that I found pretty boring. :?

I think I was in tenth grade before I HAD to read a Shakespeare play for school (It was MacBeth) but I had read a few plays before that, like A Midsummer Night's Dream, the Taming of the Shrew, Romeo and Juliet... and I'd read Macbeth before. I don't think that was all but I can't remember offhand which other one's I've read. Anyway, I think I was only like 8 or 9 the first time I read a whole play.

We read Twelfth Night in 7th grade, Romeo and Juliet in 8th, Othello in 9th, MacBeth in 10th, and Hamlet in 12th. We also saw a production of Julius Caesar in 7th grade I believe, and a production of Hamlet in 12th. I read R&J for fun in like 5th or 6th grade though with some of my friends.

I didn't have to until I was in high school, but I had read some Shakespeare just for fun before that. You don't really need to know all the words to appreciate the plays. I've only read his most famous works, though: Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, A Midsummers night Dream (that's my favorite), The Taming of the Shrew, and parts of The Tempest.

I read Romeo and Juliet in grade 6, Twelfth Night in grade 7, Macbeth and Hamlet in grade 9, Othello and a number of sonnets in grade 10, and A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Taming of the Shrew in grade 11. Grade 12 was King Lear and Julius Caesar.

I voted for 5th but I know it was earlier than that. I was never "forced" to read it. I read it my own accord because I wanted to!

The Shakespeare we have studied is:

Year 5 - The Tempest
Year 6 - Macbeth
Year 7 - Midsummer Nights Dream
Year 8 - The Tempest
Year 9 - Romeo and Juliet
Year 10 - Merchant of Venice

In years 5 and 6 we just studied extracts and in year 7 we did not read the whole play but since then it has been a play a year.

Although my school didn't get around to introducing Shakespeare until, I think it was the 10th grade, I started reading the plays at age 10 on my own. The first one I read was "Macbeth". Initially I read a version of it as a "classic comic book". I don't know if they still have those. Anyway, it helped greatly to already know the plot before plunging into the actual play. Around age 12 I saw "Romeo and Juliet" live on stage. I can't remember if I had already read that one or not; however I remember being surprised that Shakespeare was a cinch to understand when actors were speaking the lines. You totally forgot that the language was at all different.

I've been studying Shakespeare since Year 4 (age 8/9) but not whole plays until Year 7. But I read my first Shakespeare - A Midsummer Night's Dream, still one of my favourites! - out of choice, the summer I was eight. What can I say? I was a pretentious kid :P

Where I went to school, Shakespeare was pretty much all we did in 6th grade English. If I remember correctly, we did Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hamlet, and Macbeth. We also learned a lot about the history and culture of the time period in which they were written.

Because we were only 12, we read them as a class, each student reading a different character's lines. This allowed the teacher to reword confusing phrases and answer any questions we had as they came up. I don't think I read a Shakespeare play on my own until we read Macbeth in 9th grade.

When I was 10, my parents got me involved in a youth acting group that did Shakespeare plays. So I read (and acted in) my very first uncut, unadulterated Shakespeare play, Macbeth, when I was in 5th grade. I had a blast. :)
