"Romeo and Juliet" in Grade 10. I found both main characters insufferably self-centred and despised the play as a result (still do, actually), so this was an unfortunate choice of first Shakespeare play for me!

A bit off topic...

When I HAD to read Shakespeare I found it quite similar to pouring acid in my eyes. However, now that it is my own choice...I've found listening to Modern Scholar cd's makes the whole experience much better.

It was probably grade 5 or 6 for me, but that's because I was both homeschooled and extremely nerdy, so I would choose to read watch and act in Shakespeare.
I love it. Once you become "fluent" in the language, his plays are truly beautiful and timeless.

Well, that's what you're meant to think of those characters! It's funny how in our culture, Romeo and Juliet has become the epitome of a classic love story, when it's much more effective when read as a satire of those types of stories. Shakespeare is criticising the behaviour of their respective families as they basically facilitated the outcome of they play.

We read Romeo and Juliet in 9th grade. We spent some time comparing and contrasting the original work with modern day works - including film.
