 USA - NY Obtaining Driving License en>fr fr>en By pointe_less Comments: 351, member since Fri Dec 12, 2003On Sat Dec 13, 2008 12:18 AM
Hi, I am most likely moving to Buffalo, New York next year for school and am wondering if anybody could provide me with some information on how do I obtain a driving license over there. Currently, I do not have a driving license in my home country (I'm not American).
Just a few questions:
- What is the system with regards to driving like over there? (What age do you have to be etc.)
- Do I have to take any lessons from a driving school before I can sit for the test?
- Is there a theory section and a practical section to the test?
- If there are lessons to be taken, approximately how long does it normally take from when I start obtaining my license till I pass the tests and get my license?
- Also, approximately how much does it normally cost?
I'm currently torn between starting driving lessons here and hopefully being able to pass my test before I leave and later convert my lessons so I'll be able to drive in Buffalo, and just obtaining my license over there. My worry is that I won't be able to pass the tests here before I have to leave as I have to take a few months worth of lessons and wait for a test date (which can be up to 2 months or more). So maybe it will be easier to just get it over there? 1 Replies to Obtaining Driving License |

The rules vary from state to state. In most states you can get a driver's license at 16. You need to go to the Website for the Department of Motor Vehicles for the State of New York.
I found the link with information for citizens of other countries. Here it is.
www.nydmv.state.ny.us . . .
A quick glance at it shows that it would probably be best to get the license in your own country. |
