Twirling 2 baton help en>fr fr>en By macm Comments: 296, member since Fri Jan 24, 2003On Sun Feb 01, 2009 03:04 PM
I have an adult twirling athlete that has a problem with 2 baton.
She has problems with dual pattern (one hand horizontal, one hane vertical).
One of the problems is the co-ordination of the two batons at the same time and also when she releases them up and possibly catches in the opposite hand she cannot seem to work out when she has caught which pattern should then be in what hand.
Does anyone have any tips or pointers that can help her get over this? 6 Replies to 2 baton help |

What dual pattern trick are you going for? Have her try different combos and go for the one she's closest to. You can toss both batons at nearly the same time; you can toss horizontally first; you can toss vertically first. Play with different combinations; there has to be one she feels more comfortable with.
She could try a left to right horizontal toss with a right to left flip catch under a bent right leg. That way she's doing two skills that she may have less trouble separating, but she's still doing a vertical/horizontal skill. |

Try an easy combination (like previously suggested). Count it out exactly (write it down so you are always consistent). Separate baton 1 from baton 2. Week One show the combo with baton 1. Week Two use baton 2. Week Three see if they can do both baton 1 and baton 2, but separate. When the student can do the moves separately, let her try using both batons.
Two baton can be very intimidating when you first start learning. Go really slow at first so the student loses their fear. Soon your student will be asking for more difficult material.
Last year I had a student who kept threatening to quit because I included 2 baton in a show routine. At the Parent Show she did the whole section perfect. Her mom was so proud, as was I.
This year I wanted my adult student to start 2 baton. She protested. I started slow, just a few minutes every week. Now she's executing box showers and showing off! |

get her to do each part of the trick individually... the right hand, the left hand, have her mimmic the movments of the baton with the batonless hand. then once she sees how it works broken down add in the second one, slowy but surely she should get it
Hope i helped |

I say break everything down piece by piece.
Also sometimes you have scale back at first then add a little bit to each piece.
Like when teaching R & L hand work I like to teach just the right, then once they get comfy do the left.
Not to burst any bubbles....but sometimes people just aren't good/coordinated to do 2 baton....I've had 2 really bad cases of 2baton problems over the years....they just couldn't get it no matter what. They were also not strong 1 baton twirlers and that had a lot to w/ with trying to do 2. |

Encourage her that she can do it and not to get frustrated. Have her mentally go through it and vision herself completing the move.
I also recommend having her train both hands separately and then sowly putting it together. I find the trick tossing the left hand horizontal on count 1 and then the right hand on count 2 vertically. she can even add a waist wrap under the toss if she likes.
Good Luck! |

hi there,
when I was just starting out I had trouble with duel baton too.
I found if I started off simply like trying to pat my head and rub my tummy helped chanel my concentration before I picked up my batons, then once id got the hang of it I also found if I just practice the movement of the baton and not the flips I had to do it with my eyes closed to help chanel the concentration better then go on to the flips. just an idea you could try that, it helped me.
hope all goes well.
