Locked by Collie1 (165830) on 2009-05-12 05:59:29 This is quite old now. Thanks for all the help, I know the grade now.

I have been asked to learn ISDT Grade 5 modern. I have the syllabus book and music, but here’s my problem, I have never taken modern. I can read the syllabus but trying to work out exactly what the exercises are is proving a little tricky.

Let me show you the extent of my ignorance when it comes to modern.
The Warm-up starts with feet in Jazz 1st. What is jazz 1st? Is it like 1st in ballet? Or are the feet parallel instead of turned out?

I’ve tried searching DDN for help and looking on youtube for some videos so I can get an idea but with no luck. I know there are dvds of the grades but you have to buy grades 1-6 and Bronze/silver/gold jazz all together for £50 which I just can’t afford right now :(

Please can someone help me??

Yes, jazz first is with feet parallel.

Why have you been asked to learn it without a teacher? The best way to learn is to go to classes. If you are learning it in order to teach it, quite often the ISTD offers classes for teachers. Check out their website.

Are there any other school in the area teaching the grade? Maybe you could pop in to a class to pick it up. Also do you have any dance teacher friends? My old teacher has a friend who teaches in the next town and she had to teach either grade 4 or 5 I forget which so my teacher filmed our class doing the sylabus for her, maybe someone nearby could do something similar for you.

You can get them online at the ISTD's website, or you can get them from ISTD building, not ISTD2 though, thats just dance studios.

Sorry, but it would be completely impossible for you to learn this work without either going to classes or getting the DVD.

There are so many subtleties that are just not meNtioned at all in the notes.
