How many classes do you teach? Is it more or less than your optimum? Do you teach for more than one SO or do you teach at several location? Also, what is the maximum amount of classes you would want to teach in a week?

As of this year I am no longer teaching, but at the most I was only teaching two days a week. Teaching has never been my full time position so I was always limited to the number of classes that I did which was usually 3-5. I've always only taught for one studio at a time, but we had two studio's that were run by the same people so I taught for a few years at one studio and a few at another, with the occassional sub here and there.

I ultimately went down to only one day a week of teaching as it just because too much stress for me. I would go right from my regular job to teaching and there wasn't anytime for myself or my husband and being newlyweds I wanted to spend as much time as possible with him, so I taught all my classes the same day to free up the extra.

If I were to go back to teaching, I would still like to keep it down to one day a week. I am getting ready to start a family and the studio is about 45 minutes from my house so it isn't an easy drive in the winter.

I work for two studio's, one of them I teach 13 lessons a week over three nights and the other one I do one evening with five lessons. For me, especially if I'm travelling I would want a whole evening of lessons, otherwise it really wouldn't be worth it, but then teaching is my only job, so I have all day for my lesson plans and choreography.
I wouldn't mind filling in another evening and that might be happening in September as we're loosing two teachers and I might get their hours. That will probably keep me out of mischief

Well I'm the SO, and still doing all the teaching at my studio, so I'm up to 21 classes this year. It'll probably be about the same next year, and I'm adding a 2nd instructor. It's 6 days a week. Ideally I'd like to teach 5 days, but for now I do what I have to!

I teach 15 class hrs a week plus rehearsals and privates. So it ends up being like 25 hours a week. I work only with one studio. Glad I dont have to run around town from school to school. I have a motto "You cant serve two masters"...and luckily I dont have to!

I am a full time student, so I teach one day a week (saturdays) and have between 5 or 7 classes. Next year I will be adding Tuesdays to the mix and I will double to about 12/13 classes.

I work for one studio, I teach 17 classes and 3 privates/week I also direct the dance company/competition team. So I'm often rehearsing or traveling to comps/conventions on weekends. Next yr I'll be teaching 20 classes/week, plus company.

I think that would be my maximum. But who knows, I also teach pilates, yoga and fitness classes at a gym a couple mornings/week and a couple weeks/yr I do ballroom workshops for the parents at the studio.

I currently teach about 20 classes between two studios. I am definitely looking to cut back on the number of classes next year and focus more on certain programs. The amount of choreography and students is a little overwhelming. I'm looking forward to developing our organization's competitive program and expanding it. It will be a similar number of hours, but I'll be able to focus more on certain classes....excited for next year!

If it is your only job, is 30 hours too overwhelming?

I think it depends on how much choreography and extra work you are required to do. If it's just teaching then I think it's manageable. Still that's a lot of lesson planning..though I would imagine at 30 hrs/week a lot of the classes would be the same thing or similar so lesson plans could be reused for more then one class.

If it's recreational, adult or fitness lessons then there won't be so much choreography and if you have a syllabus that helps with the lesson planning too.

This year I am currently teaching 3 classes, teaching 2 days and both days I teach privates. My privates included solos, duets and trios for competition so I am still fairly busy with that.

But I would say that my max has been 10 classes not including privates. So depending on the situation working with recreational dancers I can teach more classes. But if I am working with competitive dancers then it differs.

I teach 16 classes a week. Most classes are an hour and a half (we even do our 4 year olds at an hour and a half. So it works out at about 22 hours a week.

^RileyA, how do you keep the 4 year olds for an hour and a half?? You must be a baby whisperer...both the kids and I hit our limit at 45 mins!

I teach 21 classes over 4 days a week, plus privates. I also work another "day" job about 15 hours a week (mostly just the weekends), which I would like to get rid of next year so I could focus strictly on teaching. I think my max was 23 classes over 5 days, and that was with no privates or day job...definitely better for me to teach 5 or 6 days a week and not have another job to distract me.

I teach 25- 45 minutes classes a week. I am also the SO and have one teacher who teaches 2 classes a week!

i only teach 6 studio classes (my classes are going up next year! yay!). I avaerage about 7-8 private lessons a week, and i also have rehearsals.

the more classes and private lessons i get, the more chances of me quitting my day job. i HATE retail....

Oh I soooo hear you...I used to be in retail...I thought I was going to hurt someone!!

The only retail job I didn't absolutely detest was working in a dance/costume shop. But it was a dangerous every time I got my paycheck.

I teach at a Country club, so the classes are mainly recreational.
I teach 20 classes per week:
2 stretching classes for adults;
4 pre ballet classes (4 to 6 years old);
4 ballet level one (7 to 9 years old);
2 ballet level two ( 10 to 13 years old);
4 jazz for kids level 1;
2 jazz for teens;
2 jazz adult beginners.
To me it´s the maximal I can handle, I feel exausted on the end of the week, but I´m very happy to return to teaching dance after 10 years working on fitness area.
I still have 2 classes per week as a student myself. One and a half hour flats and half hour pointe.

I am the SO of a very small school (currently 25 students) between ages 4 to 9. I have 6 classes and hope to build up to about 3 classes a day Monday thru Thursday. I love to teach but even if I didn't have my day job I'm not sure I would want 30 hours a week of classes. When the night goes too long I tend to lose my focus and the exhaustion is what overwhelms me. I know it sounds odd but I keep my day job so I don't continually obsess over what I did wrong in last night's ballet class, why aren't my dancers progressing like I want them too, was I too tough with little Susie? etc. My day job allows me to get my mind off of some of that then I go into class with a new perspective.

4 classes, 4 days a week(yuck), 2 of them on days i dont even dance. hope next year is better. hubby says its like im never home.
