In my studio, we are required to have our hair up for all classes, and in a bun for ballet. I started going to conventions this year, and noticed that a lot of people wear their hair down when they dance. I've also noticed loose hair in competitions and performances. At first, I was surprised because I was always under the impression that having your hair up made dancing easier and let the teacher see your technique better. However, after dancing in conventions with my hair down, I felt that I put more into the combinations when I had my hair to whip around. So, how do you wear your hair in class?

It depends completely on which class and which routine I'm working on. I love wearing my hair down a lot because - like you said, for some reason, the whipping around makes me get into some things more. But only for my solos and some duos.

But others I'll wear my hair in a low side-parted ponytail.

Rarely ever a neat bun. Usually a sloppy bun. But we're allowed ponytails. And it needs to be up for all group classes in one way or another.

pony-tail or a messy bun. If it's off my neck then all is well.

I wear my hair down only for hip-hop, but when I go to conventions, I wear it down, because I was able to whip my head around more in certain routines.

Ballet/Pointe is the only class at my studio in which you are required to wear your hair in a bun (a nice looking bun). For any others, a ponytail works. Mine is usually ponytail or sloppy bun, depending on the style and how I feel that day.

Always a bun for ballet. For jazz either a french braid or a ponytail.

Bun for ballet. Pony tail for Acro. But pretty much everything else I keep it down for, unless it starts to bother me.

The girls at my studio wear buns for almost every class. For hip-hop, afro, and modern they usually put it in a ponytail or a bun.

For ballet and company, a bun {but its pretty messy}
For jazz, tap usually a tight ponytail
For hiphop I usually wear my hair down in the beginning and then get really hot and then I put it up.

I've always had a lot of trouble with dancing with my hair down. I play with it, and its really thick so its hot. I'm gonna try soon half up half down though for hiphop, and see how that works.

I usually wear my hair in a ponytail or sloppy bun for all my classes, but sometimes I wear my hair down for jazz or lyrical.

I grew up in a studio where we could not ever wear our hair down so even when I teach it is up in a pony tail...99.9% of the time.

I usually had a decent bun when I went to ballet. I had teachers that wouldn't let you get away with the sloppy bun thing. They'd always have a comment like, "Have some respect for yourself and how you present yourself as a dancer!"

I used to do a nice tight bun for every class. But now I'm pressed for time before dance what with homework and 40 minutes to travel and my parents' work schedules. Now I just throw it back in a ponytail or messy bun, depending on the day.

I've always been envious of the girls who can dance with their hair down. When I try it it just gets tangled and annoying. However, this summer I'm getting my hair a lot shorter so I'll have to dance with it down and hopefully it'll be less annoying.

Our hair strictly has to be up.
It has to be in a neat bun for ballet if it's not then our teacher does it for us. Embarrassing or what! They aren't as strict for modern/jazz but it still has to be up, preferably in a bun.

She says 'I managed at the royal ballet with a hair net and 7 grips ... none of these bobbles and fancy clips'

Bun for ballet.
Ponytail for everything else.

We wear our hair down for our modern piece, but that's it.

For jazz I will put it up in a high ponytail and then plait it, as it keeps out of my face that way, but for ballet I always have it in a neat, high bun (not like ontop of my head but the normal spot). If we have a troupe or solo with our hair down, we might practice it a few times like that at the end of class.

For jazz in a medium too high ponytail with bangs held in a heafband or up with bobbypins. I can't stand my hair down for any dance classes.

I have to keep it off my face just for myself... it bugs me if I can feel it moving around. So for ballet, I do a bun for sure and then for Jazz/modern, I do a ponytail.

We are required to wear our hair up in class, and in a bun for ballet. UNLESS we wear our hair down for a specific dance. otherwise..hair up, secure, and no headbands...(cause they sometimes fall out)

Well for class (if it's jazz/tap/lyrical/modern/hip hop) I wear my hair in a ponytail, because our teacher allows it. For ballet I wear my hair in a heavily-hairsprayed bun. I have jazz and lyrical after my ballet so I usually unravel the bun for those classes. But I have had a solo where I wore my hair down. It was a refreshing feeling dancing with my hair down, though. You feel so... free :)

I have very thin, fine, hair which will not hold hairpins, bobby pins or clips. Plus, if I try to keep those in place with hairspray, mousse, etc., strands will break, making my hair even thinner. So I cut it relatively short to keep it off my neck and stay cooler. Also, to stay a bit cooler I get the back into a very short, low, ponytail. I have to use a thickish band with small diameter, one WITHOUT any metal, to keep from damaging the hair. It's not fashionable but it's practical.

For competition all the little kids wear their hair in a low pony tail, no part, with a rhinestoned ponytail clip regardless of what they're doing. Seniors have the option of half up half down for small groups, solos, duets, trios. For large groups/lines/productions, we have to have it in a low pony, no part, with the sparkley ponytail thing.

At Conventions, seniors generally wear pony tail or half up half down, depending on the dance, but a bun for ballet. I think the little kids wear theirs in a pony tail all day.

At class, we can do what we want, excpet for lyrical and ballet, which they need to be in a pony tail, the little kids have to keep theirs in a ponytail all night.
